Default Briskoda Wiki

Is there already one, or one in the pipeline?

The forum is a great and powerful communication tool but i think that the wealth of knowlege and information would be better stored in a wiki. It may just be me but i find searching the forum just brings up tons and tons of repeat posts and useless information that takes forever to sift through.

If people could contribute their knowledge to a searchable and well managed wiki it would cut down on the huge number of people asking the same questions over and over and make finding technical based answers easier.

Just my opinion though..

I'd second this. I'd even be happy to host/manage one if the reason behind not having one was the time involved for colinD and the mods.

The forum is great, but sometimes it can't half take a while to find the information your after.

I will third your offer

I've suggested this myself in the past... it was pointed out to me that people wouldn't use it and the site is far better.

I'm of the same opinion as you guys... if the solutions/info is stored in one place so you can type in a keyword - say "clutch" and it brings up all available questions/queries then that is far easier than trawling through the threads looking for keywords.

My two pence worth

auroan is a unix/linux whizz, i am fairly handy with code and web technologies and thats just 2 people. There are other folks who's skills are probably far better than ours, maybe the site needs to make use of them and take some of the load and time constraints off colin and chums.

Take a look around any of the car related forums and you will see the same questions pop up over and over and over again and the same people answering those questions. The whole purpose of a wiki is that people contribute. I am sure most people would rather answer a questions once than over and over.

All of the guides that have been posted, all the error codes and vag com help, the ICE and security info, all of the detailing info, i would say the one thing your not short on is content!

Sound like a great idea, a quick way of getting the information
you want directly.

For some technical questions it can be difficult to track down the relevant information required.

If everyone could contribute it would be a great resource for Skoda information

I agree but the information does have to be collated and varified. I think once started it would grow over time.

You can flesh it out with member profiles etc... I'd love to know exactly what the likes of Makefish, Delac, Shifty and Jason are running on their motors

It can only serve to supplement the site rather than detract from it... if you give the community a chance I'm sure we'll deliver - and even it it doesn't take off, Brisky's not going to be affected by it.

Please please please give us a chance

Thanks Stu for stepping in and responding. The thing with the content for wiki, is very much a case like wikipedia, verifying content would be e by the massses, and getting the content up there would be the same.

I reckon all the mods would need to do is set up a basic structure fo people to follow.

I can see no reason why it couldn't grow into a VAG wide wiki, if there is not already such a thing.

I reckon once the ball is rolling the vast majority of info could be almost copy pasted from forum posts with a bit of tweeking and editing. Obviously it would require moderation and topics on certain subjects would need approval by the forum mods.

I did install an integrated wiki, was based of a fork on media wiki.

I can still bring this out, but it's an unsupported modification and the original author has effectively given up on it.

It tied forum profiles into the wiki profiles so we could lock down editing and subsquent spamming of said wiki. There is a minor compat issue with the new version from last test so it's still an option, just not up on the list.

why does it have to be integrated into the forum software? Why not just use the full blown version of media wiki and if people want to contribute they have to register with that aswell. From a readers perspective it will make no difference as they dont have to register to read the wiki, but editors and contributors of which i imagine will only be a few will have to sign up with an account.

If not there is this, which i assume is what you have installed.. MediaWiki and vBulletin - Wiki

Yes and it's that which I talk about above...

Mailed but no response, I'm not really wanting to install unsupported/developed software with so many vulnerabilities out there.

I'm not adverse to installing a standalone wiki at all. Except for one thing, not everyone is going to understand dual registration. I'm moving towards a unified login for all the separate sections of the site, thus you, the next user and I don't have multiple sign on's for the one site. If it comes to it and I can't get a response, then there is another link or a standalone version. But then comes maintenance and population. In the brief time it was up before only 2 pages were created (in about a month). I'll happily do anything to better the site if it's going to be a return on investment of time. Maybe it is now, maybe you could be the main editor of it and drive it's usage, in which case we could do it without hesitation.

hmmm i see your point about user registration, i also thought about searching the wiki. Is it possible to search the wiki from the forum search feature? I know media wiki has hundreds of plugins, i dont know if there is anything that would enable you to add some integration if not full integration.

I do not mind being an editor at all, i think it would need a small team of people to push it forward and to promote users to write articles its defo not a one man job!

EDIT:

any good?

Extension:VBulletin/Users Integration - MediaWiki
