Question how to name change?

Hi all,
Iv'e been a member for some time but don't get online that often. My problem is when I registered I chose my user name at some haste (butchvrs), now in hindsight, I think it's a bit how shall we say? Not manly! And would like to change it, the question is how to.

I remember reading something a while back. Too many people doing it at one time IIRC and it muddled the board up somewhat and it was difficult to contol from an admin point of view.

So the rule was laid down, everyone equal.

Re: how to name change?

Hopefully it's only a temporary no-no whilst upgrades are in progress as I can think of several valid reason why one might want to change a username. I guess most servers offer multiple e-mail address options, so could perhaps re-register?

The Forum rules say that you are not allowed to have two usernames, but if you are a genuine person and in any case wanted to quit using an existing name, then I don't think that'd be morally wrong. (The beanstalks who want to play silly-b's can usually be spotted fairly quickly methinks.)

Would like to hear if it is a permanent restriction though...

Regards
Mo

Re: how to name change?

In all fairness surely it would be better to let the Guy change his username than to have him leave the site? Can this not be made a privelage of freedom? so long as mods agree with the change first?

Trouble is , if someone joins then for whatever reason their old username isn't suitable any more they can't get it changed and they can't just sign up with a new ID as that's also against the rules and would lead to them being banned.

Not an ideal situation IMO

Re: how to name change?

I'm sure i read (in response to a previous request) that name changes are not a two minute job for the mods. Something about having to run lots of scripts etc (whatever that means).
Having said that unless I start calling myself Andrea at weekends, or change my birthdate from 24th July, I think I'm pretty safe with andy2407

Re: how to name change?

I would have thought for new users, they would simply get around the no name change policy by PM'ing a mod saying please remove (in this case) "butchvrs" from the membership list and then just re-sign up with a well thought out ID?

I'd like to change mine. please remove "devonutopia" and I'll rejoin up.

(and if anyone is silly enough to see this as a serious statement..... )

No frownies please, it's Sunday, the day of lighthearted banter, rebuilding fences, drinking too much and burning the Yorkshires.
And directing risible comments at paupers and fules
( Channel 4? I'm not allowed to watch tv as long as there is a soap opera impending anywhere on any tv channel. )

Re: how to name change?

I certainly started a debate here, looks like I'll stick with"butchvrs" then, and in answer to being female I'm not, I'm a 43yr old 16 stone Firefighter and married with 2 kids, and I've never worn womens clothes (well not out anyway, no matter what it looks like on the video!)

Re: how to name change?

There is no rule. We used to do the odd name change as a favour when people really really didn't like their existing one, or had a good reason to change it. However it takes hours, not minutes, and carries a risk of corruption to the database as it's a process that has to run uninterrupted in a terminal window.

The fashion for name changes got too popular, and so we decided we won't do them any more - simple as that. And yes, it's permanent.

If you really really don't like your name, register a new one, and PM a mod to tell them you've done so. We'll ban your old one, and you can carry on as normal.

Hope that makes things clear.
