It actually generated statistics of how often you'd used it, or been thanked by someone else.

Saves having to go through the bother of typing a response, and the strains on the servers of yet another post.

It's also useful for thanking people when their comment is a few posts back, rather than interrupting the flow of the thread.

Also, thinking about it more general forum terms, I think it was of use to users searching for information, as it was possible to see which thread was useful to people, perhaps in a sea of other information....
