EGR Valve

Mines due to be replaced, making noises that it shouldn't, have any of you had one replaced yet, and if so at what mileage?

Re: EGR Valve

The EGR valves fitted to PD engines with auto transmission are water cooled and appear to be less reliable than the "manual" version. Loss of coolant is another failure mode of these valves. I haven't seen enough "auto" versions of these to predict their reliability, but it's not very good.

Re: EGR Valve

Funny you mention that, the vent holes in the sides had residue coming out of them, I just put it down to burnt carbonised oil, this time it was making knocking noises, gone now, had a new unit under warranty.

Re: EGR Valve

Takes burnt gases and basically pumps them back in with fresh fuel for another go because there is still unburnt fuel in exhaust gas.

Re: EGR Valve

Further to my "call me a tight sod" post, I took my Superb to an independant vw garage who was able to do the diagnostic for £20 (plus another one for free anytime in the future). Anyway he did his stuff and it threw up this fault...

19586 - EGR Sysytem Regulation Range Exceeded
P3130 - 35 - 10 - -- Intermittent

..the guy didn't seem to keen on doing the actual repair work because he said that he wasn't able to pin this fault down to one specific thing i.e. it could be one of a few things.

So can anybody suggest any common solutions for this fault which I may be able to carry out myself? btw i'm not a trained mechanic but I do follow instruction quite well. Thanks

Re: EGR Valve

Open the bonnet and it's the metal thing next to the oil filler, when they play up it's generally one of two things, 1 - it's caked in old oil and gas residue, carb cleaner is the solution, or 2 - it will make a knocking sound indicating the diaphram inside it is split and then you need a new unit.

I assume that would be this thing (below) then? How would I go about removing it?

Remove the jubilee clip - the screw(s) circled red?

Re: EGR Valve

Would the failure mode of this also attribute to increased exhaust smells?

Possibly Simon.

I'll have a look when I'm over next. I'll bring my spare EGR with me

Re: EGR Valve

Interesting you should say that, because i'm sure that I have noticed this - but until now I just put it down to paranoia. Also of a night time (when my headlamps are on) there appears to be excessive exhaust smoke coming through the front grill - again i've dismissed this as me being paranoid.

I don't have exhaust smoke from the engine and if that is a picture of your EGR Valve then mine is as clean as that..........I had put it down to the weather but now I am not convinced........

Don't be fooled by the apparent cleanliness of it - I gave it a clean (on the outside) last week.

Re: EGR Valve

Think they all leak in time. Mine is looking a bit oily these days but at £140 +vat they're not cheap and other than a clean egr valve I'm not sure what difference changing it is really gonna make!
