Which engine?

If you had a choice of which engine to choose in your Superb which would it be? i'm interested as once i've finished with my Fabia (a while yet), the Superb is on my shopping list.

1.9 PD 130 - Tunable but what spec is it available in?

1.8T - Very Tunable and I really like the sound of it (in both senses of the word) but as far as im aware it's only available in "comfort" trim and i'd want the top spec trim which to my knowledge is "Elegance"

2.8 V6 - Sounds brilliant musically

and available in "Elegance" trim but doesnt look too tunable, also the power output is limited since it's a N/A car and no mods appear to be available, i.e. cam/throttle bodies etc - costly for a small gain in comparison to ECU remapping etc.

I personally would opt for the 1.8T if it were available in "Elegance" trim as it is extremely tunable, and feeling 250-300 horses under the bonnet must be interesting

Personally 1.9TDi, just seems to suit the Superb IMHO.

You havent mentioned the 2.5 though.

Whats your opinion of the 2.5tdi? never driven one, like my petrol 2.8 but interested by 2.5TDI, my dealer said it was not good - thoughts

Im not a big fan of the 2.5 if im honest, its noisy, not that economical and dont sell to well. Its an old engine now and a fair way behind PD technology and it shows.

Well as you may have guest from other posts on here I’m deliberating over a very similar situation.

IMHO after having had the 2.5 on a 24 hours test drive - yes MPG was slightly down on my 1.9 TDI - but then again you get 2 extra cylinders and .6 of litre more oomph... not to mention the shear real-estate your driving.

As for noisy not sure about that… it make a wonderful V6 noise with a bit of DERV gruntyness for good measure. But in the cabin, which, if you're driving it I hope you’re sat, it is but a mere pleasant humm in the background that occasionally, but very rarely, reminds you it still there....

The most noticeable thing about the 2.5 over the 1.9 is the fact that it is silky smooth... oh sooo smooth... smoother in fact I dare say than if you combine the Milk Tray Man with James Bond and let him loose at one of Hef’s parties....

Ok back to greasy bits, yes it maybe older diesel technology but the PD engines are known for their roughness... which brings me back to Huges Place, point above…

As for not sell well ... brilliant ... means if you find one second hand ones are a bargain...

I'll add a few word for the 2.8 V6, it really does sound fabulous, and suits the car really well. I had a lift in a 1.9 diesel, expecting it to sound the same as a 2.8 once it was running, but it had that horrible drone that was there all the time (I know this will be very unpopular to many, but the 1.9 doesn't sound at all smooth).

In a car that has so many luxury car toys to play with, a very quiet, very smooth engine just adds to the luxury.

I know what you mean about the tuning though, it seems a shame that we can't just add in a few dozen extra horses without spending much, but, the thing has a 0-60 of 7.4 and hits almost 150mph, which is adequate for a large luxury car.

In something that is as heavy as a Superb, with fwd, going much over 200bhp will probably just make the thing a pig to drive, even with a full set of electronic aids (and you get more of these with the V6s than you do with the other engines)

The final thing to consider though, is the price. If you're buying secondhand, the 2.8 V6 petrols are a real bargain, I bought mine for around £5000 less than equivalent diesels, which buys an awful lot of petrol

How about the Superb with the VW V10 diesel & gearbox ?

Have driven the 2.5 Tdi, had shed loads of go for such a big car, and appeared to make a good motorway cruiser.

It would be nice if they offered the Superb with the 4.2 V8 and four wheel drive, but I guess that would cut into A6 territory too much.

My old man gets a new car every 3 months (approx 12000 miles) and he always has a Superb 2.5TDi V6 with Tiptronic 'box in elegance trim - bet you can't guess who he works for? In fact his next car due in a couple of weeks is an Octavia (A5) 2.0TDi with DSG and pretty much every option box ticked!!!!

As for the Superb, he has the 2.5 as they are much better sellers than the petrol version and as mentioned before very smooth.

It also goes very well on the motorway - I was driving it the other day following my mate in his octy vrs who after the journey commented , 'Blimey, that superb's quick'!!!!

I'd be very happy with the 2.5

Hi..I hav a humble 1.8T that had been Bilsteined, REVO-ed, GFB wz DV and it is doing great. FC is reasonable for its weight and performance.n yes.I do like tis sound (stock exhaust) when I pull. Low drone discreet muscular ...Power plus comfort!
over here in asia, we do have the 1.8T in Elegance trim but price is 3 times that of UK.
The 1.8T is extremely tunable n easy to maintain..(esp for a manual).U can CZECH wz Yoda here.. haha.
Speedwise, Of coz it can't be compared wz my next Evo IX GSR! haha
