Front Brake Discs

I noticed they, or mine have no screw in them and can freely rotate while the wheel is off, is this correct or am I missing a screw here?

Re: Front Brake Discs

There is no locating screw - the wheel bolts hold the disk in place. They will end up rusted to the hub anyway.

Re: Front Brake Discs

Same as on my Nissan Primera the wheels hold the discs in place when bolted up.

Check the above thread as I nearly had a wheel fall off due to a tyre change an no locating screw on the disc, the replies make interesting reading!

Re: Front Brake Discs

Does your "tool kit" not include a plastic stud - so that you can stop the disc rotating while the bolts are out? If not just buy the Audi aluminium threaded thing as it is strong enough to hang a wheel on. I tend to remove the locking bolt first and fit this stud in its place, then when all the other bolts are loosened off raise the wheel off the ground and rotate it so that the stud is at the top - then remove the four remaining bolts. I seem to be lucky as I've never had a problem with the disc not seating correctly before tightening up the bolts - but I tend to rotate the wheel before lowering the car so would notice if it was not sitting square.

As I try to buy tyres at Costco, they get you to sign a disclaimer that says bolt/nut torques to be rechecked after 100 miles - but as most of us are sort of DIYers, I 'd hope that we would do that anyway!

Re: Front Brake Discs

I'm still looking for the source of the numbers for these dowels - can't find my receipt (unusual!), tried to find the thread that first gave me these numbers, so now its down to looking them up on ETOS!

Re: Front Brake Discs

Okay, I give up I can't find the source of the info on the part numbers - it must have been on this forum - either the Fabia or Superb sections, but probably as an "off topic" comment/input - so I can't find it - or my receipts. So, it was back to basics and I've searched on my VAG parts catologue (ETOS) and come up with the following P/Ns (1)Plastic one like you should aready have = 893 012 223 (2)Touareg one (must be the longer aluminium one) 7L0 012 223 . They are called Tommy Bars!

I've checked that the thread sizes are the same (M14 X1.5) BTW the differance in price between these two items is very little - but the aluminium one is about 50% longer than the plastic one - that is only a problem if you've parked the car very close to a wall though! Either way they are both a lot cheaper than the ones that one of the VAG aftermarket specialist shops make and sell!

My Passat original plastic one is hollow and has survived a few wheel "offs" prior to me buying the aluminium one - I also bought a plastic one for the Polo 9N when I was ordering the aluminium one (VW didn't supply one with the car as the discs are all retained by a screw) - and it is solid plastic.
