Perculiar FNS Noise

Folks

Just been out in my fathers 1.9TDi Elegance auto to listen to this strange noise emanating from the FNS. It sounds like a gentle whooshing noise, noticeable on left and right hand turns and when slowing. It occasionally appears to be accompanied by a gentle rhythmic knock. Skoda have taken a listen and been on a test drive but are at a loss to explain it. No doubt it will get worse in time and become easier to recognise but I'm wondering if this may ring any bells with any other owners?

Cheers.

My 2002 (52) 1.8T is exactly the same. It's only started happening since I had the front tyres replaced although I don't think it's the tyres. I was worried that it might be a wheel bearing or drive shaft issue???

Yes I thought that although my car has only done 10000 miles. My tyres are quite worn at the front, dont know if that has anything to do with it?????I will be having my tyres replaced soon so I will investigate fully once the car is on ramps with the wheels off.

Unhappy

Quick update

I've just swapped my front tyres with the back ones and the noise has got considerably worse. This leads me to believe that it's not mechanical but to do with the tyres and wheels. First thing tomorrow I'm gonna get them all re-balanced and see if it makes a difference. I'll keep you posted.

re Noise

I have experienced noise like this for some time. It has been to the dealer twice and they have found a build up of very small balls of rubber inside the tyre. They look like little pieces of lead shot.

The tyres are origional spec continental sport contact 2.

The problem is resolved when the tyres are emptied but comes back after a few months

I've sorted my noise out. Was going to get the wheels balanced but took the car to the dealer instead. One of their technicians took it out for a drive and came back insisting it was tyre noise. Of course I was sceptical, but he assured me that the type of tyre on the car was well known for this issue (STAR MILLENIUM - budget tyre on the car when I bought it) and suggested I replace them. Just had some Pirelli P6000's fitted and he was right, the noise has gone completely. He also said (as I suggested wheel bearings) that it's very rare for wheel bearings to go on Superbs so soon (30,000 miles). I was amazed that tyres alone could make such a horrendous noise!

I'm a happy Superb driver once more

Just had my worn front tyres replaced today and the noise has now completely gone. When I looked inside the old tyres after they had been taken off I found a lot of small rubber balls mentioned in the earlier post
