| Briskodian | Superb crash safety "The Audi TT, Skoda Superb and Suzuki Grand Vitara scored no marks in tests showing how much protection is given to pedestrians in a crash, said Which?" full story here : here Interesting that the Superb gets no marks, but that the Passat does better. Edit: link sorted

| Further article in today's Times at http://driving.timesonline.co.uk/art...508326,00.html Can anyone explain why the Superb comes out so badly? It seems incredible that it's actually worse than a 4x4 Shogun. |

| Would have thought the TT would be excellent in a crash due to the smooth lines of the bonnet to screen, etc? ![]() Don't want to sound too harsh here, but if a pedestrian wishes to commit hari kari in a situation where an emergency stop on my part can't help.... I'd sooner be personally protected against another car hitting MY car, than comprimise that safety by making elements of my car's bodywork crushable to help cushion a pedestrians noggin! Just my personal opinion! flame away! ![]()

| Interesting, but the Superb differs from the Passat bonnet wise as it has shaping to provide a raised central strip ALA Octavia. This would probably make the bonnet stiffer. I find it interesting that the Superb comes out worse than say the RangeRover, ML or even Hummer. I would also have to say that whilst I am for protecting those in contact with cars, it would seem to me that a certain element of weight throwing is being carried out by another Euro body.

| I'm with Jason on this one. I couldn't give two hoots about the effect of my car on a pedestrian in the event of them running out in front of me. Sure, I'd do the whole emergency stop thing, but in the event of a crash, who are any of us going to be more concerned about? Nobody else but ourselves. Human nature is self-preservation. Have you got another flame-suit Jason?........ ![]() |

| I'd have thought some legislation on metal bull-bars would be more useful in reducing pedestrian injuries.

| The bull-bars one already exists, though there are ways round it (like coating them in rubber, building them into the grille etc a la Discovery/Freelander) The pedestrian issue is far thornier - it doesn't matter what the authorities do to make the act of crossing a road safer for them, if a pedestrian wants to ignore the provisions and jump out into oncoming traffic, they will. Rob - see what has been done to Queensway - umpteen crossings provided, low speed limits, but pedestrians will still cross 3 feet either side of the crossings, usually without looking!! |

Worst bit along there for it (IMHO) is the intersection with Well I' Th' Lane (where the cross hatching is near Rochdale Car Audio), as loads of schoolkids cross there in the mornings and it's a horrendous bit of road for car users without small deathwish kids adding to the equation. Mind you, I believe the council have announced some large complicated restructuring of the road to make it a complex series of one way streets... ![]() Rob. | |

| The thing with pedestrians is that low bumpers smash their knees and do a lot of damage, things like hummers hit them over a larger area so dont make so much mess. I hit a pedestrian once - they got fixed for free on the NHS but I had to claim for a new bonnet. Decided I'll swerve round them in future |

| Surprised about the hummer though as that's well heavy. Imagine it running over your foot - ouch !
