Superb - Skoda's lemon?

Being a generous kind of person, after washing the wife's fab I washed my stepfathers superb.

Lovely 2.5 TDi with all the kit, just coming up to two years old.I was the one who pushed him in that direction after he complained about rear leg room in his last car, a volvo S60.

I was just wondering if Skoda have shot themselves in the foot with the superb though.I mean how much smaller is the new octavia? Not much I suspect and I understand rear leg room is much improved which was the real selling point for the superb.Further,he is now interested in the Octavia and the benefits of a hatch as opposed to a boot and also a rear wiper.

Don't get me wrong I think the superb is a brilliant limo type car but for the Ł20000 he spent on it he could an octavia with every piece of kit.

I think the superb will only really be a good second hand buy and quite a tempting one at that.I just can't see where skoda is hoping to collect market sales from now? Will be interested to see the new superb. Will they try and compete with the executive boys then?

Looking at the two in a showroom on Saturday morning, I'd have to say I'd agree. Main problem with the previous generation Octy was rear leg room, which they seemed to have improved significantly in the New Octavia. Coupled with a more useable boot and a less daft name, it will be serious competition to the Superb.

Though VAG do seem rather good at producing cars which compete with other models within the brand...

Would say the new Octy still has a little less rear room that the Superb....probably about the same as the Passat. I guess the Superb also has a little better shoulder room.

What it can't get away from is it's Passat roots...after all it's just the extended wheelbase Passat with new front and rear.

A new Superb will have to be more distinctive in styling and stay at the current prices....Skoda couldn't compete at it's original prices and dropped them...IIRC.

After just sitting in a new Octy, seat set for me (right back, and as low as possible), there is no way someone else 6'4" could sit behind me, I couldn't get my feet in, and my head hits the roof , whereas in the Superb there is still acres of legroom .

If you want a "Superb" deal

Check this out brand new Superb 2.8 Elegance tiptronic with metallic for Ł18,550. I seriously thinking about it... trying to resist...

You are spot on, Yeti.

My friend has a new Octavia whilst my father has a Superb. I am 6` 4" tall and can assure you the rear leg room in the Superb with the seat set for a six footer is vastly superior to the New Octavia, which, I grant you, is a great improvement on the original Octavia but nowt to get too excited about.

to be honest i think the new octavia is ugly as sin, the view front on looks terrible with the way the wings are shaped and the big goofy look being made more so by the projector headlights, the superb is more balanced with its two bulb covers ie main lights and fogs. the side profile is horrible too with the window seals looking cheap and nasty, there a hideous way to finish the windows off and i think they should have stuck to the old way of doing it as per octy 1. the rear doors angle so acute it make entrance tricky for som not like the superb and as said above the rear room aint nothing special once again. just my 2ps worth

Personally, I wouldnt buy a hatch full stop. Its either an estate or saloon.

Is the Superb the Skoda lemon..I dont care. Its a comfortable car especially for long journeys.
Do I care if I am the only Superb driver on the roads....do I heck.

I was considering both cars for my next car, until I saw the new Octy. It looks "goofy" as p1tud says, and the design is a missed opportunity. I dont think the design of the Superb is that great either, but it has masses of presence and that rear space is incredible. I have a Elegance in Black Magic on order, along with some parts from milotec to enhance the exterior a bit.

The Superb a lemon? Not at all. This car and the Octavia are in totally different class segments. My Superb is due for manufacture in Week 11 - Thats next week!

I don't think you can compare the Superb to the Octavia, regardless of the fact that the Octavia has improved rear leg room. The Superb is the top-line model of Skoda, more in the luxury end, and it LOOKS luxurious where the Octavia does not.

That's almost like trying to compare the X5 with the X3, and the X3 DOES have room in the back. Different clientel, different category, different market.

I am very pleased with my Superb, and it gets more attention than I thought it would, a lot of people look. Only seen one other since I have had mine and he is a local Taxi driver so will prob see more of him around.

A different car, which is always a good thing!

Don't get me wrong,I think the superb is great. An A6 for Ł10k less.I just think it sits in an awkward market segment in the UK with the new octavia and most skoda buyers opting for a larger car will take the octavia route

As for the X5 and X3 they appear very similar to me.But that is another discussion altogether and BMW's problem

As with all skodas and most cars I suppose, the UK seems to be one of the most ignorant on car ability and the most taken with what someone has stuck on the bum and front of the car.

If you buy one or intend to I just think they are better as a second hand buy or company car choice in this country. They are limo like but those with 20k to spend would probably prefer to squeeze theselves into a little 3 series BMW than wallow in comfort for reasons mentioned above

Agreed here with the above Monsieur. I think that the Superb sells well in other EU markets, but suffers in this country from "it's a Skoda" mentality and the fact that every rep type person must have an VW, Audi, Merc or BMW depending on how far up the company car tree they have reached.

In the UK surely the superb makes best sense as an 18 mth old used car buy - that's what I would go for. I note down here in Gosport, in the recent months there are now quite a number of Superb taxis, which was the main stay for the Octy for the first few years of its production life, so you never know, it may well catch on shortly.

everyone has different requirements in a car and makes the old question which is better impossible to answer. For me I would like a superb but after a recent omega i would never willingly have another saloon -they just do not suit any needs.....for me the superb is out because of the lack of two things.....

VRS

& ESTATE
add these to the superb range and they'll go top of my list at the end of the year for a new car

I'm a salesperson, and I'm going from a BMW 3 series to a Superb

I do get stick from my Audi driving colleagues though

I'll have the last laugh when I settle into my nappa leather upholstered solar sunroof cooled superb

Shame a lack of PDi engines has caused a delivery delay

I think i was in Stafford a few years back and ALL the taxis where felicia or octavia

oh that was so good to see :ŕ)

snobbery has still almost killed off skoda, UK is a very important market, but if only people would not look at the badge! as the rest is pretty std VW/audi! and "i want a new polo" so buy a fabia................. "its a skoda" so is the polo.................. )))

i really fear skoda will just vanish and be used as a design house

Shame VW, Ferdinand Piech if I remember, put a stop on both the excellent Superb (sic) estate, which looked like an E class. AND that excellent coupe, coz he was worried it would affect VW sales! Same reason we probably won't see a new Superb
Trouble is mines up for replacement next year. 3 cars in the running: Another Superb (highly probable), VRS Octavia (have to see it first), New Passat (gonna be V.expensive 19k midrange SE-Tdi and still not as large legroom wise)
