Superb Speedo confirmed as 5% out

I have had it confirmed by an independant test that the Speedo on a Super 140 Elegance is exactly 5% over.

I was happily running along the A303 with the cruise set on 100 when some kind chap in uniform flagged me down & explained he had checked my speed with his laser thingy magig & I was only doing 95.

Ah well £60 to Gordon & 3 points

Interestingly he read the speed just over 500 Metres from him

Re: Superb Speedo confirmed as 5% out

That's about the same as all the other models of Skoda.
The one on my Octavia reads 78mph at a true 73.

As for the fine , not much sympathy here as you were well over the limit and lucky not to get taken to court.

Sadly it's not a collector card, you don't get a discount with the more you have

Very nice of the gentleman to check it for you though

The allowable tolerance for speedometer accuracy according to vehicle construction and use is +- 6%.

VAG got it right this time.

Re: Superb Speedo confirmed as 5% out

Construction and use say that the speedometer may show up to 110% of actual speed (ie the speedo is allowed to overread by up to 10%) but it would never show your speed lower than actual speed.

Bad luck, Stuart - whereabouts on the A303 was it?

Chris

A few miles west of Thruxton theres a long straight, I would guess over a mile long, he was in the lay by at the end using a Silver BMW with a detector mounted on a tripod next to the car.

Anoying thing is he said they can only operate those kind of traps when the traffics fairly light .
So if you speed in heavy traffic & keep close to the car in front you stand a better chance of not getting caught. I think I would rather speed on clear roads than test that theory & take the points

Anyway fair cop, just glad I wasnt in the 4x4 as that is hard to keep restrained

Re: Superb Speedo confirmed as 5% out

Polices rules for pulling you are +10% + 2 Therefore in a 70 limit you can drive at 79 (70 + 7 + 2) add on the 5% error & its 83 so an indicated 80 should be safe

Did you pull the "I was only regenerating my DPF" card?

That's the ACPO guidelines , but it's not a guaranteed rule that they always work to.

Some forces in some locations *will* work to a lower tolerance , others will work to a higher one.

On a speed trap I worked on we started issuing tickets at 40 in a 30 , and of the 35 or so people that were caught , three were police officers.

Very close, could have been a ban.

is that a 5% tolerance or 5mph out then?
My Felly reports my speed as 65-67MPH when the speedo reads 70

License was clean so unlikely, generally you need to be 100+ for an automatic ban & then on a clean its normally not more than 4 weeks. 96 would have been a trip to court though

These days you have to expect to get caught occasionally, might invest in a bit more technology in the next car, buy a foreign car or get a foreign license,Malta is apparently a good bet

Shame plod cant do something about all the unroadworthy cars out there & the poor std of driving. If 1 in 10 cars are un insured it cant be that hard to catch a load. Basic problem for enforcement these days is the lack of traffic police, the introduction of the traffic Wombles has only made the situation worse but Im guessing they will shortly have more powers.

At least you actually got to have a conversation with your acuser though, not just a van at the side of the road taking pictures!

Re: Superb Speedo confirmed as 5% out

When I've check my dials against Climatronics digital speedo, the difference is huge. When my dials shows 90mph I'm actually doing 80mph.
Wondering what was the real speed when I was doing 145mph in geramy :-) 130mph???

The climatronic speedo seems just as far under the true speed as the dashboard is above it.
