freeview has been working fine for me, and I'm using some box I won off Ebay about 3 year ago for £5.

Re: has anybodies Freeview box gone off ?

I was talking to BBC Comms engineer about this recently and it true. Depending on the chip and or the software in the box, the latest updates can render some boxes redundant. My parent box went off a few weeks go because of it. I am not sure if every transmitter area will be updated at the same time

Re: has anybodies Freeview box gone off ?

its basically the very first boxes that were designed on what little digital info that was available back (the digital standard) and since its moved on newer boxes were given the option of firmware updates etc.

Next is DAB radio, they were saying last year that all DAB's up to about a year ago would be obserlete due to them changing the technology on DAB etc, just hoping mine can have a firmware update as it was expensive.

Me too. I have an Evoke 3 and it needs to be connected to an XP OS pooter for updates, I am now Vista’d up on my pooters. I contacted Pure and after they told how to fix it, using XP as an OS and me telling them they hadn’t bothered to read my first request, they turned round and said “tough” you need XP.

Not insurmountable I know, but not very good customer service from the alleged top end of the DAB portable market.

There was a viscous rumour going round work that DAB may be pulled as a Broadcast medium some time in the next few years as it is proving to be prohibitively expensive for most broadcasters.

Re: has anybodies Freeview box gone off ?

I've heard that rumour too Lady E

My Dad said it was because DAB radio sales weren't as high as expected and competition from Internet Radio stations etc....
Also if DAB was going to be big how come all new cars don't have a DAB aerial and headunit?

But I dont have any fact to back any of that up, so its all rumour for the moment.

ive got a bug too. it keeps coming up on screen every so often telling me i need updates, yet on the website it says on the firmware page that no new firmware is there apart from the one i got when i first got the radio. dont really want to have to loose this DAB as it was expensive when i bought it and has record function and does look quite nice, also winks at sinister when you have the eyes up on the screen.

Re: has anybodies Freeview box gone off ?

so there is every chance that my Pace box and my Humax recording box will go off sometime soon if/when they upgrade the Freeview in my area

pathetic waste of money to make electrical stuff obsolete

Re: has anybodies Freeview box gone off ?

I have found out the problem. It occurs when you attempt to retune the freeview box and makes a large amount of channels number 000 so they are still watchable but not in the correct standard channel number order.

DAB is a botch job. Rushed out by the Beeb.
The standard is old the rest of Europe skipped DAB and is moving straight onto DAB+.
The sound itself is over compressed and the radios are over priced.

Certainly hope it's not, as I've got a Roberts Gemini in the kitchen, a fantastic Roberts Sound 23 in the conservatory and a Robi attached to my iPod.
Not more redundant technology

Re: has anybodies Freeview box gone off ?

2003 vintage Goodmans GDB2 still OK. Although capacitors seem to be failing again (Replaced 'em once) causing unpredictable losses and switch-offs.

My Sagem has never been brilliant. Always knocks itself off at random moments. IT updated the otherday and now I have no program information but all the channels. I might buy that Sony PlayTV for the PS3. Turns the PS3 into a recorder too.

I had the same problem as mentioned above, with my Bush stb, but suprise suprise last night a message appeared on screen asking if i wanted to update the software, needless to say i opted for the upgrade which took about 6 min to receive. A rescan later all is back to normal on the channel listings and you get an option for 14 day listings.
