| Hooray - new toy! ![]() First posting on Briskoda using my new ASUS eee 900! Thankfully SWMBO's eldest son (who soon has a M Sc in computering) is visiting us so he'll be able to guide me through the mysterious world of Linux. But at least I found my way here all by myself ![]()

Well done sewdishskoda for taking the escape route built by Mr. Torvalds, a great Finnish / Swedish collaboration. I wonder if Linus drives a Skoda as a reciprocal gesture? ![]()

| Re: Hooray - new toy! Thanks for the encouraging comments everyone ![]() Yes, I'm convinced that it was a good buy although the keyboard is terribly small - thankfully I've got rather small hands so I'll probably get used to it eventually. And ASUS makes a few mistakes - e.g. "forgetting" to put a Swedish update catalogue on their server so that an error message is all that comes out of attempts to update/install programs. I also miss an application allowing for most elementary photo editing (e.g. cropping). But my 3G internet connection is up and running!

I feel a bit as if I've been teleported to the old DOS days only that the few DOS commands I still remember are useless. "User-friendly" might be an elastic concept, but I'm not sure that Linux fits under that heading. Even to create desktop icons for the programs that are installed is (still) a mystery. But thanks a lot for the flag, Mo ![]()

| Re: Hooray - new toy! Update: After spending most of a rainy Monday on the task I've finally succeeded to add a new shortcut to the menu ![]() Only thing I can't understand is why the icon disappears instead of getting highlighted when I point the cursor to it... It's also slightly annoying to find out that Asus has launched the 900 model on the Swedish market without first making the necessary preparations regarding updates on their server and so on... I wouldn't be surprised if most Asus users pretty soon changes either into WinXP or to another Linux version, e.g. Ubuntu. When it comes to photo editing I found an application installed named mtPaint which will be enough on this PC - you don't really want to use all the powers of Gimp on a 8.9" screen

| Re: Hooray - new toy! Question for you - How quickly does the ASUS eee900 with Linux start-up ? ie from switch on to ready for use. Reason for asking is because my boss is thinking of one for a type of presenter to showcase our customers pictures of new products / designs etc. and if it was quick because the disk is solid state etc. ? |

| Re: Hooray - new toy! Anyone got any news on models coming out with slightly larger screens? If there was a similar machine but with a 10"-12" screen, I'd get one. Not seen anything from Acer or Asus though - that I can find anyway. Cheers, Steve

There is a 10" eee on its way (already on the US market, maybe in the UK as well) - the eee1000 with a 40 GB SSD. But probably not as cheap as the 900.

| Re: Hooray - new toy! Thanks for the info (on both startup times and spec )Not too fussed about the SSD, would probably go for say an 80Gb standard HDD instead. I've seen 1000 models on sale here in the UK, but all seem to have the 8.9". Cheers, Steve

Experience Easy, Excellent and Exciting Computing With New Eee PC?! and the 1000H has a 80GB HDD (and comes with XP instead of Linux). Can't say I miss the HDD, though - on my 900 I've 13 GB for storing own data/applications and that's more than enough unless you have a movie library - but you don't want to watch films on a 8.9" screen, so who cares? And I can easily add 4GB just by putting a memory card in its slot. Checked the startup time today - 50 secs (including password login). Startup, activating the 3G internet connection and logging in at Briskoda (that's what matters, after all ) was a total of 2 mins. Not sure, but I think part of the speed depends on using Linux. This might give problems when using it for the purposes mentioned by Monty: Openoffice and MSOffice are not 100 % compatible, so some advanced MS PowerPoint presentations and some Word document elements (esp. tables and numbered headings) will not look exactly the same in OpenOffice.

| Re: Hooray - new toy! Thanks for the info, I'll go check the specs again. As for data storage, I need at least 30Gb as that's what I have with me on my Sony at the moment. And it's full. Mostly taken up with digital photos and music. Cheers, Steve
