Laptot problem already, help!

Got an issue with the laptot already, bit of a weird one.

When I first booted it up the wireless settings were already in place. It asked me for the network key etc for my router, everything worked ok.

I havent done a great deal to the machine, nothing downloaded to it etc. It worked fine last night as I posted from there at about 2am.

It wont connect to the internet now. Not only has it lost the wireless setting but the whole option to look for a wireless network. Only the cabled modem set up remains. There is a LAN switch on the front of the machine, this is turned on and it displays on screen that it is on.

I have tried a windows restore, I have also completely restored the machine to factory defaults with the ACER device onboard the machine but still no wireless.

Whats gone on and what can i do?

Help

Re: Laptot problem already, help!

We had a similar issue when first setting up the wireless. All it took was a reboot of the wireless router and a restart of the laptop. Also, try looking in your internet management window to get it to diagnose the problem.

With Vista, I've witnessed all sorts of issues with regards to software control of the wireless adapter on laptops. If you;re using this OS, try using the wireless hotkey rather than the physical switch - you'll generally have to hold the function key and press the key with the wireless symbol which is usually one of the middle number keys.

Re: Laptot problem already, help!

We had almost exactly the same issue when we got our new Sony laptop last month.

The thing that fixed it was to download new software through the Sony site. i know that won't fix your as it's a different make.
There was a temporary fix and it was that we needed to uninstall the drivers but not full thing. When the laptop was switched on again it wpould search for the drivers again and the wireless network would work.
But switching it off again I would have the same problems of not being able to find the wireless lan.
Might be worth contacting the manufacturer of the laptop for possible solutions.

Re: Laptot problem already, help!

I used to get that occasionally on my laptop. I figured that it might be picking up a spurious signal from my neighbours wireless, so I changed the channel from the default setting and not had a problem since.

Re: Laptot problem already, help!

In the properties of your wireless adaptor, click the power management tab and make sure the box marked "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is unchecked.

I had the same problem initially and still occasionally when my laptop goes into sleep etc the network card does not seem to wakeup and I have to reboot.

Re: Laptot problem already, help!

There is a known issue with the Acer utilities and Vista. Uninstall the Acer utilities and just use the wireless access routines built-in to Vista and it'll be fine.

Re: Laptot problem already, help!

SWMBO's new laptop did the same thing, dropping the wireless connection - went to the manufacturer's website and downloaded the latest drivers for all their bits and all was well again...

So what are you running? XP Home, Pro, Service Pack level? Model etc. of laptop please. And my money's still on the horrid Acer utilities as the primary cause of the problem.

Re: Laptot problem already, help!

I'd check the Acer website for an updated wireless driver Ross. And check the power management options for the wireless device, as already suggested.

Also, what router do you have?

Re: Laptot problem already, help!

Hmmm - Have you tried googling on "ACER One Wireless Issues"? Flaky wireless seems quite common;

http://www.theacerguy.com/2008/08/09...he-aspire-one/

No fix that I can see yet, but most folks seem to only be having trouble after accepting the live update invitation, which installs ther latest utilities on your system, which breaks it.

in which case a roll-back would fix it??

Not always. XP Pro has a full-on roll-back, but XP Home doesn't cover everything eg. some registry entries aren't covered and files dated before the upgrade aren't touched in the rollback. Generally, if you want a rollback to work properly, you need to create a restore point immediately before you perform the 'upgrade', and with XP Home, even that doesn't always work.

Ross, I have problems with mine not connecting. If I move to a different location in the
room it will connect. Move back to my original location and full signal......

Re: Laptot problem already, help!

It wasnt a wireless signal issue as such, there just wasnt any wireless functions on the machine.

Re: Laptot problem already, help!

Did this with dad's dell at the weekend.

Installed a driver from windows update and killed the wireless. Luckily he had a cable, and got the driver from dell.

Exact same issues as yours. His wireless on the laptop is IBM chipset IIRC
