Great if you like LCDs, but not so good if you like good contrast levels (not the artificially quoted ones that LCD manufactures espouse). Because of true blacks, colour tones are superb on some plasmas and although I think the Bravias are amazing for LCDs, they are still behind Plasmas if you like to watch movies as I do.

You didn’t expect me to agree with you, did you?

As for CRT, it still takes some beating, but nobody is doing HD large screen CRTs sadly. I dread to think of the depth of a 42” HD CRT, but it would be fun seeing one and I wouldn’t need a radiator on in the winter either.

Are you still up Col and editing your posts you little tinker?

Re: LG plasma goes bang.

Well I called the insurance company. They are sending an engineer around to see if it can be repaired, if it can't it will be replaced.

Re: LG plasma goes bang.

Plasma over LCD anyday imo, for reasons stated already.

If the insurance wont stretch to a KURO (I'd be very surprised if they did) then look at the Panasonic Plasmas. An exceptional mid range product imo.

When we were buying a 50" for the lounge beginning of this year, after many demo's, it came down to the Full HD Panny or the Pioneer KURO - no doubt about it, the KURO was the best; mainly due to its deep dark blacks, but was it £700 better?! I decided to go witht he Panny and bank the change.

Havent regretted it one bit and it does everthing well.

What's it like with standard Freeview pictures as that will still be a lot of what I watch.

Are you viewing via an aerial or cable???

We are on Virgin as the whole town in cabled, so we can get digital and analogue via that cable, and although the picture quality is good on analogue, obviously it is not the same high quality as digital.

A mate who lives just outside the town has the "W" version on a normal aerial and its a great picture, although living in the Lea Valley there are some problems with reception for him as we are in a dip, and the transmitter is at Crystal Palace, and the dip dictates that he has to have a very high aerial.

Luckily on cable we do not get that problem.

I know several people in a similar position, and lots more who only replace telly because they "break beyond economic repair".

I have freeview and do most of the viewing on my Humax PVR9200T which will be connected via SCART

having had a demo...totally agree, although to cut costs(?) they seem to be going LCD too you need something like a PDP-LX508D

Aren't the smaller ones LCD?
Spending over 2 grand on a 50" plasma is way beyond what most people want to spend

Re: LG plasma goes bang.

LCD is cheaper to produce and generally considered inferior as a standard to Plasma. The clever thing is the manufacturers have invested heavily in bringing LCD up to scratch and have, by and large achieve this. LCDs really are very good now at the top end, but Plasma is still king for absolute picture quality. This isn’t just my opinion it is the opinion of ALL the Vision engineers I have every discussed this with (several of them) and also that of all magazine writers (they have no axe to grind as most manufacturers produce LCD and Plasma) at least in the case of KURO tellies.

Pioneer is going into business with Panasonic to produce the next generation of KURO tellies, so we will still have them for the short term future at least. Perhaps I should start saving for the OLED tvs now

I agree as well, pioneer are not going LCD though. They are instead going to be sourcing their plasma panels from Panasonic rather than make their own. The current range of Kuros will be the last made with pioneer panels, the next gen will be panasonic.

I have a Panasonic 42-PZ81 set as I could not afford the cost of the pioneer, I will never buy an LCD TV, to me the picture looks to processed and unnatural unlike the current range of plasmas which have a very CRT like picture.

Try watching sport on an LCD and the motion blur will put you right off the technology. When panning during a football game for example, on LCD the pitch side adverts to do disappear into a blurry mush. On my plasma they remain sharp and readable.

Re: LG plasma goes bang.

not all LCD's are that bad manny, our full HD LG LCD is pretty decent but its nothing compared to the huro

but our 42" LG cost £900 and the 50" KURO we wanted was something like £3500

anyway andrew what you want is the PDP-LX6080

Re: LG plasma goes bang.

I think my 42” Kuro is around £1,200 now, so it isn’t that expensive for the IQ. There is so much more to a good picture than just pixels

That's not entirely true.
The panels are the same, but the electronics which drive them are developed independantly by each company's R&D team.

You statement is a bit like saying a Seat Leon Cupra is the same thing as a Skoda Octy vRS, so why pay more for the Seat considering the engines are the same. OK, that's probably a bad example on this forum

Ross, if you do decide to get a new telly and if you do decide to get an LCD and if you do decide to get a bravia, let me know, I might be able to help

Re: LG plasma goes bang.

Next question.

My Xbox 360 was connected to the LG via a component lead.

Being as the Panasonic is a propper 1080 HDTV is it possible/worth connecting the Xbox via a HDMI cable???
