Microsoft update

Had an auto update from microsoft to install Service pack 3 on my computer.I have SP2 at the moment. So i allowed it to install and was prompted for restart computer so it would take effect which i did.
The result was that my computer wouldn,t accept this SP3 and gave me a warning saying it has shut down because of possible software attack.I tried to reboot in safe mode which it asked me to do but still wouldn,t reboot so i had to go back to an earlier timing point when the computer was ok.i chose 3 days previous. Its ok now and hasn,t got the SP3 pack inside it.But my question is being as iam not PC expert is why did an upgrade pack from Microsoft crash my PC?
Its running Windows XP home edition BTW.
Hope someone can help.

Re: Microsoft update

I suspect you may have some anti-virus/spyware programthat thought that the SP3 replacing system files was an attack.

Here's what I'd do: Dowload Windows XP SP3 seperately, disconnect from the internet, turn off your AV/Antispyware/Software firewall, and run the installation. Reboot, re-enable the security stuff.

So true. And if you don't go into the seedier side of the internet and don't open obvious trap emails then you have very little to fear anyway.
