Moving a program...

Hi people,

Is it possible to move my copy of AutoCAD and other programs that I use for work from the HDD of my laptop to my protable HDD so that I can load it from there or will it not run correctly?

Just thought I'd ask, that way I wouldn't have to take my laptop everywhere and I can just use it from the portable one, also I was told that the complete program won't just copy and paste?

Also, is it possible to say download a copy of ITunes straight onto the portable drive and run it from there as apposed to moving it from the laptop drive, as I have lots of music backed up on there?

Thanks.

It very much depends on what kind of computer you have.

What operating system are you running?

Re: Moving a program...

There are registry issues for starters, plus (probably) copy protection things to consider. So while you could uninstall it from your local HDD and install it to the portable one, it would probably still only work from your laptop but you'd now be in the situation that you'd have to take your laptop AND your portable HDD everywhere...

Re: Moving a program...

Some USB sticks have a bit of software pre-loaded on them that effectively lets you install software to the stick that can then be run on any machine.

First time you use the USB stick in a new PC you have to run a small installer , but after that all your stick-based programs are available.

It works rather nicely for simpler stuff so it might be worth giving it a go to see if it will support Auto-cad.

Mine was a Lexar I believe

Re: Moving a program...

Not sure about the AutoCAD question but as far as iTunes is concerned I have iTunes installed on our laptop and the home computer but they both look at the same iTunes database file on the network drive which is also where the music is stored. This means when you add music using one machine it also appears in the library on the other machine because, well, it is the same the same library. Only one machine at a time can use iTunes though.

I assume if you saved this database file on your portable drive then you'd be able to set each machine's copy of iTunes to look at it on start up.

Not sure if that helps.

Re: Moving a program...

Peter, basically what you're saying is that you want to run Autocad off a disc other than C:, yes?

I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work, as long as Autodesk are happy with the idea. Why not call them and ask?

Re: Moving a program...

The Autocad thing will require a re-install, I'd say, even with a clever drive as suggested by DrZ- I'm guessing if you installed Autocad to a drive like that, then it might be portable. For ITunes, you can change the location of the ITunes Library, and copy the files over- that's quite straightforward.

I could actually as it's a legal copy, good idea.
