Unlock your BT Home Hub to use with another ISP

• Go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Local Area Connection -(rightclick)- Properties
• Click on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" to highlight it, then click on the "Properties" button.
• Click on the "Use the following IP address" option and enter the following in the boxes.
• Code:
• IP address: 192.168.1.1
• Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
• Default Gateway: 192.168.1.254
• Click "OK" then "OK".
• Connect the HH to your desktop PC with the yellow ended CAT5 cable.
• Plug in the power of the HH.
• Go to the folder you unzipped the Speedtouch Update Wizard to.
• Doubleclick on upgradeST.exe
• Click on "Next"
• Let the wizard detect your HH. When you click on "Next" you will be asked for the login of the router.
Login: admin
Pass: admin
• Click on the "Have Disk" button, and find the ZZMYAA6.196.bin file that you unzipped earlier.
• Click "Next".
• This is your final chance to chicken out before you start the update. If you're ready, click "Next" and let the update run.
• If all goes well, you will see the firmware being uploaded to the router and then being installed on the router.
• It will ask you for new login details just press CANCEL - Ignore the error message at the end because the wizard is lying to you.
• Close the wizard.
• Go to Start > Run ... and type telnet 192.168.1.254 then click "OK".
• Login using the same login details as before...
Login: Administrator
Pass:
• Look at the text, and if you see 'Speedtouch 7G' and 6.1.6.9 in the top right corner then you have SUCCESSFULLY updated the firmware of your HH and can now proudly call it a 7G.
• Type exit to leave telnet.
• Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Local Area Connection -(rightclick)- Properties
• Click on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" to highlight it, then click on the "Properties" button.
• Click on the "Obtain an IP address automatically" option and then click "OK" and "OK" again.
• Plug in the phone line into the 'broadband' socket of the router.
• Open your browser and type in http://192.168.1.254
Login: Administrator
Pass:
• Click on Speedtouch on the blue menu on the left.
• Click on the "Set Up" link under 'Pick a task...'
• Click the "Next" button on the popup window
• Select Routed PPP then click "Next"
• Select 0.38 from the list for VPI/VCI
• Select PPP over ATM (PPPoA) for 'Connection Type'
NB. Only if you're on AOL, choose PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE).
• Enter the username and password for your ISP broadband login. Click "Next"

I think it is self-explanatory from that point on. That basically means that you've got Internet capability.

Have a look around the menus. You've got far more options available to you.

You can get the files here - Download bthub.rar, upload your files and earn money. but it may not be worksafe.

I thought that they were unlocked as it were anyway?
Mine lets me change the username and password

You can change the user and pass but as soon as it gets on line it changes them back to the default values, the BT business hub does this also.

Lol, although quite why anyone would want to use a homehub....

ive just bought a sky broadband router off ebay for a tenner... can be flashed back to a proper netgear

I've got 2 identical netgear's - one provided by Sky (currently in box) and the one I've had for donkey's with custom firmware on it....flashing them is a doddle.

I thought BT etc these days always own the router and you simply rent it when you use their services.

You stop, it must go back. I know this is true for Orange, and thought it was the same for BT too.

Just add to this, i got my "sky" router thismorning...

Have flashed it with dgteam custom firmware and its MUCH faster than the homehub... my ping is lower, downstream and upstream faster...

now i know this is because the homehub err's on the side of caution with SnR ratios, but im only a few hundred metres from the exchange and can sync at 7.5mb but never get anywhere near that... now i am

just swapped out my home hub for a dg834 after reading this... and internet is now 33% faster!

Just a quick bump.. i actually started fiddling about with the firmware on my DG384gt.. by changing the snr percentage i have managed to get an extra meg out of my line... now syncing at over 7mbits

best thing i have done is disconnect the bellwire from the mastersocket. cheaper than an iplate and its given me almost an extra 1mb in sync speed

If so, does anybody know how to use a third party router with a BT home broadband service?

Unless they give you login details, then the easy way to get them is hack into it (passwords etc will be on the net) then do a config dump to the computer. You'll find it in there.

Works for Sky, Post office and many other plug and play ISPs that provide the router and no other details.

Answer to your question is No you dont have to use BT supplied I have a linksys, and it works fine.

As long as it is configured to ISP, then it works fine.

Just remember, like many others, the conditions *might* say you merely rent it, and must hand back if you leave or pay a vastly inflated figure.

So many people who ebay'd their hubs and live boxes soon regret it when a bill for a few £100 lands on the mat. Orange demand £250 IIRC for a livebox.
