If you are or can be switched onto variable servicing you will need the longlife oil. Longlife 2 (0w/30)has been superceded to longlife 3 (5w/30) with a couple of exceptions. Fixed servicing is the plan recommended for arduous use (stop start / high speed, high load) and variable servicing is recommended for light duty (low speed, low load, light motorway cruising). If you open up your service book and look at the paper label with all the PR codes on it will tell you whether it is ok for variable servicing. It will be the bottom left PR code and if your car was set up for variable it will have QG1 stamped there, if there is either QG2/QG0 you are stuck with the fixed servicing plan. wonky Last edited by wonkydonkey; 19-06-2008 at 15:53.

I would have thought the 5w-30 they are on about it the VW507.00 spec which is used for the PD engine on variable service, though variable service is not an option for the Fabia. Cheers Guy.

Should your dealer says 5w-30 this means that your car is VW 507.00 more likely. But it could be also a mistake. At the end of the day no one knows what is really behind these standards. VW says that 504/507 standard is back compatible with "older" standards. No clear guidance however is available anywhere. I'm still in doubt if I upgrade from 505.01(5w-40) to 507.00(5w-30) and I stay on fixed servicing intervals 10k miles, whether the engine protection will be better, and wether I will achieve some fuel economy but nobody can confirm this.

| Excellent, the 505.01 oil you have purchased will be ideal. Cheers Guy.

| Not quite true bud, both Mobil and Shell make a 505.01 approved oil that's a 5w/30 but is not the longlife 507.00 / 504.00. I think the Mobil one is called Synt S special V 5w/30 but i'm not sure about the Shell. Last edited by DGW; 01-07-2008 at 19:13. Reason: Quote fixed. |

| I'm so completely baffled by al this. I have a 1.9 SDi Octavia. What should i be using (hope you say what i have been using) Also, i'm buying my dads 55 plate Passat 1.9 TDi 105 soon. Anyone know what oil that should be. I think its on variable servicing and would like it to stay that way.

| The passat will need an oil that meets the VW507.00 spec and these tend to be 5w-30. There are plenty to choose from here VW - Engine Oil - 507.00 It will be a bit over kill but the same oil would also be suitable for your SDI. Cheers Guy.

| Thanks Guy. Having read a few guides i figured the Passat would want the VW507 since its so expensive. Its 10W40 that i've been using for topping up the SDI as t uses about a litre between services. I got it in a 1L bottle foc from the mechanic that does my servicing. Given the prices i've been seeing for VW507 oils, i dont think he'll be giving me any free oil once i start taking him the Passat ![]()

| Fords are supposed to have 5w-30, looking at the age etc I would look at a 10w-40 as this will give you much more choice. Have a look at the Fuchs XTR 10w-40 here Fuchs TITAN XTR 10W/40 High Performance Semi-Synthetic Engine Oil Cheers Guy.

| Thanks for that. I have added Mobil Syst S Special V 5W-30 to the list of 505 01 oils for the Fabia vRS. Interesting that it is the only 5W-30 oil on that list.
