Well, I'm told that they don't allow drag runs in the wet, so I'm afraid if the forecast is looking pretty dodgy on the Thursday/Friday beforehand I'm going to have to pull out. I'm really going 95% for the drag runs, 5% for the show (and obviously to watch other drag runs as well, which is always good)

Hoping for some sun.

I have just checked with the raceway and the following applies:

They have facilities to dry the track so if there is rain the night/early morning before there is no problem.

If they have the odd shower during the day they can dry the track quickly

If there is continuous rain or frequent heavy showers then the track will remain closed.

Given this, we need to keep a close eye on the forecast and I suggest that we should make a group decision to cancel if rain is promised as there is no real shelter there and with the track closed there is no point in going.

Would appreciate your comments

You have more faith in the abilities of forecasters than I do - and I know the supercomputers they use, and which finger they stick out the window for confirmation.

A decision one way or the other on the Friday night should be OK. By then there will be good info about the weather for the area.

August 18th is the next actual RWYB. I wouldn't be able to make that.

There are, but none have the prep of the surface like Santa Pod. I know of a good one in York, but I wouldn't travel that far.

I'll try to get to Chippenham for 5.30, but that means me leaving Devon at 4am!? Hardly seems worth me going to bed that night!

AVOID THE A43!!!

Don't forget the British GP this weekend.

Oh and I can't now make this event. I've agreed the sale of my car, so I'll not be able to rag the t*ts off it anymore.

Re: GTI Festival - Sun 8th July Santa Pod

Hi Guys, as I live only a couple of miles from the Pod I have been monitoring local forecasts from several sources - not looking too good at present, Thurs and Fri are supposed to be dry, Showers on Sat with rain all night and a wet Sunday.

This can change and I will post again on Thursday, still with the group decision on Friday.

If we cancel I will put up a post outlining the options for a run up the Pod later in the year, but there are no more GTis so any Run What You Brung sessions will a real mix and some very hairy motors drive past my door on RWYB days.

Re: GTI Festival - Sun 8th July Santa Pod

Hi Everyone:

Well I have checked several different forecasts for Sunday and guess what there is no absolute consensus.

Two local forecasts say rain is due Sunday pm but disagree as too what time it is likely to start - as they are local I give them more credibility.

Two National and 4 Internet forecasts forecast says it will be fine but cloudy, especially in the afternoon with rain coming in overnight

As I only live a couple of miles from the Pod I have no problem with waiting for a final update on Saturday evening but as most of you have along way to travel you can not wait that long.

I will check the forecasts again Friday lunchtime and post an update early afternoon - but if anyone decides to pull out before then please let us know so we can all make a decision either individually or as a group.

If the majority decide to call it off then I will look for alternative Pod dates to see if there is a suitable time later in the year when we can do this.

Re: GTI Festival - Sun 8th July Santa Pod

I will wait until Saturday to decide. It's looking like the "uncertainty" will be sufficient to put me off. I don't fancy spending £40 on diesel, and £30 to get in and show / run down the strip if there's any chance of there being rain breaks.

At least it would give me a chance to spend some TLC time on the mongrel's inside.

Re: GTI Festival - Sun 8th July Santa Pod

Good News

The national and local forecasts are all predicting an improving picture.

All agree that there is now only a very slight chance of an isolated shower in this part of the country later in the afternoon on Sunday so there seems little likelihood of 'rain stop runs'.

Important Travel Info

Anyone coming up the M1 and exiting at J14 - following the normal route along the A509 through Olney when you get to the Warrington Roundabout above Olney you may well come across some DIVERSION signs, IGNORE THEM, the road is closed at weekends beyond Wallaston so............

1. Go straight ahead at the Warrington roundabout towards Bozeat/Wollaston.

2. When you get to the next, Bozeat, roundabout take the 2nd exit back into Bozeat - take it easy there may be mobile speed cameras in the village.

3. After a very short distance take the 3rd left, Allens Hill, just past large red brick building (converted flats).

4. At the top of the hill turn left, Harrold Road, signposted Poddington.

5. At end of this straight road, 1.5 miles, turn left - again toward Poddington.

6. Santa Pod is a right turn off this road, well signed

REMINDER A43 CLOSED

Remember when planning your route that the A43 is closed to all but Silverstone traffic

Re: GTI Festival - Sun 8th July Santa Pod

(Jason - Devonutopia here) I'm in a bit of a sticky situation here. I sent my license off about a week ago for change of address and still not had it back. I don't have anything for RWYB which is what I really wanted to do. I'm trying to find out if they'll accept my advanced driver training day paperwork as evidence as they needed to see both parts of my license to let me go on that day.

I'm not going to go if I can't RWYB, but their office is shut now to know if I can use my AD day as evidence. Heeelp.

Right - setting off at 4am so I think I should go sleep now.

Going M5/A46/M6/A14 to give Silverstone the widest berth possible. Suspect going home the same way will be the wisest thing as well. Should arrive there dead on 8am when the gates open as I'm not going to hammer it up there too fast.

Re: GTI Festival - Sun 8th July Santa Pod

Great day - wall to wall sun with a nice cool breeze.

With the other sporting draws - Silverstone, Tennis and the Tour de France amongst them, there were far fewer cars running than last time, only 50 or so rather than the 250 or more.

I ran 5 times and tried not to disgrace the Skoda name but have no real benchmark to measure my runs against. My fastest run was 16.25 secs and fastest terminal spped 85.44mph - from a standard Octy 2ltr Diesel with DSG.

The DSG really kills your Reaction times as you have to hold it on the brakes before the off and the brakes interact with the ECU to ensure you can't rev over 1000 and the clutch wont bite till you release the brake - so reaction times were recorded as slow - .75 to .9sec.

So I guess I could claim a run best run time of 16.25 - .8289 Reaction time = 15.4sec but thats probably not in spirit of the event.

Does anyone else with standard PD140, with or without DSG, have any times to gage mine against.

Edit - Just noticed on the printouts they appear to show a best acceleration time of 0-69.02 mph in 9.74 secs (excluding reaction time) which seems pretty good to me

Re: GTI Festival - Sun 8th July Santa Pod

I just got back. Feel a bit sunburnt. Long bloody drive though. 4 hours odd each way for about 6 hours at the Pod. Driveshaft was good this time and gave it some early bedding in, then went hell for leather. Tried experimenting with tyre pressures, etc, but could not get faster than 15.08 down the 1/4. Got some good speed off the line but felt the car hanging back a bit at 80 odd. I think I might need a more aggressive map for this kind of action.

Plus side of the nice map is 66mpg on the way home.
