  1. Got say I am bloody pleased with my new toy. Lots of upgrades including the Canton Stereo. One thing that is baffling me is the fact when driving the car with passengers, the voice is amplified through the speakers.......

  2. SFTWARE UPDATE DONE - FEEDBACK. Software update done and its much better. To explain fully I will say how it was, how it is now, and how it affects pull away BEFORE: Lift clutch, revs jump to 1700 - 1900 from 800 If you keep the clutch at that point (lifted but not yet at bite point) the revs stay at that level. As you continue to lift clutch and bite point is reached the revs fall as load is put on engine. Noise, clutch wear, angry driver. HOW IT IS NOW: Lift clutch, revs flick up to 1300 - 1400 and quickly fall to 1000. This is with the clutch held at the pre bite point. In practice you lift the clutch in one movement so the flick up to 1300 is not noticeable. So I would say that if the car was like this when I got it I would not have noticed that it had a 'pull away assist.' So for me that's the end of the Pull Away revs issue. I did discuss the hesitant nature of the car with the head technician. It appears that emissions and MPG rule in the car world. Cars run on a much leaner mixture than they did years ago. This leaness does seem to make itself felt when pulling away - like not enough choke for those that remember pulling that knob on the dashboard in their youth. I also think the Octavia has low gearing, especially first gear. As soon as the car is rolling you feel the need to get into 2nd gear as it sort of nose dives as the gear is too low to make progress. Anyway I'm not losing sleep over that issue, I will bask in the smugness of my non revving pull aways.

  4. I don't see how having headlights on during the day is incoveniencing anyone, unless of course they are on main beam. I would rather have my headlights on when the visibility is marginal and for me the brighter the better.

  5. What torque settings do you need? Wheel bolts, sump plug or oil filter lid? To be honest I just use common sense and I've been fine for the last 7 DIY services.

  6. Long exposition of phone camera has hidden how much it was snowing. Photo was taken 15 minutes after temperament ride on not yet cleaned streets, like in the computer game "God mode" in the barely moving traffic. Quite a pity I haven't brought GoPro. Kids in the back loved it! Not really sure who enjoyed more. Lovely car.

  7. Hi everyone. Just purchased a used 2013 Yeti Greenline and very pleased with it so far. Brother has the 1.2 Auto which we nearly chose instead, but the base model spec was so poverty stricken... Just hoping the Government don't move the goalposts over diesel cars too far!

  11. Maybe a stretch for car of the day but certainly a surprise... I've seen a few now and it genuinely is a decent looking motor. I think probably the last time I saw a vauxhall (a real one not a Holden or a Lotus) and though "nice" would have been the Calibra. I'm not saying I'd buy one, I've seen too many broken down Vx recently but it's a handsome motor. Makes you wonder how they sneaked this past the design board of doom and dullness.

  16. Off topic but|: Actually auto lights should be banned, there are too many driving around with headlights on in daylight, too brain dead to realise the lights are on when they are not needed and inconveniencing others. Fog lamps should be switched via a relay so they can't come on when the ignition is started unless deliberately turned on. Even Xenons should be banned - construction and use regs should limit light output, not power input. In the dark you should drive to what can be seen, not fit brighter lights which inconvenience other drivers, so you can go faster. I do have Xenons (which came as standard but there were other things on the spec that l wanted) and the auto lights are used in manual except in Europe when they are used in "Tunnel" mode which is what the feature is really aimed at.

  18. Took my 64 plate Honda Silverwing for it's first mot today. It was actually 3 years old in December but waited until the weather had perked up a bit. Passed ok without problem. It's only got 3.5 thousand miles on from new so I'd have been disappointed if it had failed. So went for a jaunt for an hour afterwards. First one of the year. The way the weather's looking it might be a while before I'll be out again.

  20. Not the clutch per se, but if gearbox or engine don’t have good oil, increases the drag, then tends to make driver think gears are notchy, so likely to slightly change driving style, riding clutch slightly more to smooth the changes. Most people probably don’t consiously notice their clutch style compensation.

  21. I'm lost. How do regularities of oil changes affect the life of a 'dry' clutch?

  22. Have to say, that does look good in Meteor Grey. I contemplated MG for mine, but as there wasn't one to view anywhere I stuck with what I know and ordered in Black Magic.

  28. In all my years of driving I've only ever had one clutch changed. And that was because the pressure plate springs snapped. Mileage on various cars & vans has been 240k miles on a Citroen Berlingo (the one which needed a clutch), 170k miles on a Berlingo, 150k miles on a Peugeot Partner, 140k miles on a Seat Altea, 145k miles on a VW Jetta, currently on 137k miles on my Yeti. Clutches last very well when driven carefully.

  30. Wife was a teacher all her working life except when breeding, when she went back "supply" teaching was okayish, now it is completely terrible deals, and the education leaders why they can't get anyone interested in supply work to cover for all these teachers completely fed up with life in the classroom. Oldest daughter followed her mother into teaching, when she needed a change as her large school staffroom was completely filled with negative vibs, she did an exchange to Perth Oz, which was entirely a different job, though Oz people on the whole tend to be very positive anyway, when that ended and she could not stay on, she returned to her old job as teachers were running out the door so quickly, then taught in a "British" independent school in KL for 3 years - which was as enjoyable to do as teaching in Oz, now she is back in UK deliberately got herself a position in a challenging school that has a strong management team, now gritting her teeth and hoping for better things to happen soon, while trying to avoid being physically abused by some kids that should really be in a special school, but society likes to "include" them and allow other pupils to get physically abused and lots of teaching time wasted. Maybe humans should get vetted for suitability for producing and "breaking in" kids before they are allowed to breed?

  35. I think the mirror control needs to be set to L for it to do it? You put it in reverse gear, set the mirror to angle where you want it in L mode. Leave the control in L mode, drive off over 7mph and it'll return to position. Stop, select reverse and it should go down again.

  36. I would contest your claim 'C02 g/km figures of the 1.4 TSI engine car is a work of fiction'. Based on my experience with my manual 1.4tsi (103kw version) I'd say the test results are pretty accurate. If I drive in circumstances better than the test profile then I will better the test results and the reverse is also true. Of course I'm assuming that L/100km results are closely related to co2 output. The tests themselves are open to all sorts of criticism.

  39. I always measure what I've taken out then use this as the starting point for what goes back in. Always check the dipstick Before I drain to ensure I'm under the full line line. would never use a suction method to remove the oil. I feel that it would never remove all the old oil? if there is a plug to remove all the old oil that is perfectly situated at the lowest point in the sump I can't understand why you would not use it? Gravity is such a tool, why fight against it? it takes minutes to remove the under tray and then drain the oil, even just using basic car ramps.

  40. Agreed, every journeys different. I'd say I'm not that anal as well but then I've got a transparent 5 litre container marked at different levels that I use for mixing the screen wash concentrate Whilst our brown dog won't tip the balance I suspect the camping supplies (lager, crisps and burgers) might!

  41. I've seen a few pop up, a few months back I saw one on 29K miles in silver, wanted over 4 grand for it! First registered on Thursday 24th of April 2003 near Sidcup. At an estimated 29,487 miles, this car has done a lower than average number of miles for its age. Back in 2015 I got my Black vRS on 65,000 for just over 2 grand. Which was the lowest I had seen. I wouldn't worry about higher mileage models, as long as they've been looked after and with paper work to prove these will go on and on!

  42. Stop-start only functions when the engine is warm enough and there's enough charge in the battery to definitely start the car. If the battery starts running low while the engine has been stopped automatically, the engine will re-start to charge it back up. If the car thinks it's warm enough to stop the engine, it's fine. It's common knowledge that cold starts contribute a lot to overall engine wear, but not so with hot starts. Cars with stop-start come with better starters as a part of the package to prevent them from wearing out prematurely. If you permanently disable start-stop, you'll still benefit from the uprated starter, especially with cold starts. In my rough guesstimation, stop-start ends up costing more in battery wear than it helps with saving fuel in most scenarios. But the difference is insignificant due to batteries wearing out over time anyhow and difficult to measure since the benefit of start-stop is minuscule and batteries last for years.

  43. This has nothing to do with Audi's or Skoda's but it might give one or two of the older members of this forum a smile.... I once had a Vauxhall Viva, its previous owner worked in the bodyshop of a Vauxhall garage and from the outside it looked like a Magnum (is anyone on here old enough to remember them?). Wide wheels, slightly flared arches, front spoiler, spots, grill, the lot... Unfortunately, under the bonnet was a standard, gutless, Vauxhall Viva engine.... and not a good example at that. A 50 mile drive to Blackpool to 'cruise' the prom involved carrying at least 1 gallon of oil (never had to do an oil change, just stuck a new filter on every now and again) AND a gallon of water. It also had a 4 speed Bedford Beagle gearbox out of a van. Top speed, if I felt brave enough, 65.... maybe 70mph depending on which way the wind was blowing. Problem was, every boy racer, at every set of traffic lights, wanted a race.... very embarrassing However, I still have very fond memories of that car......... Terry

  44. I'm surprised no-one has given him the right answer. Just print a BMW badge and sticky tape it to the centre of the steering wheel. Instant 25% increase in bhp, 0-60 is reduced by minimum 1 second and sexual attractiveness doubles. The only downside is that it automatically disables the indicators...

  45. Very likely correct. Transverse engined TDIs have generally needed one of the engine mounts to be removed to change the timing belt (the mount is inside the belt path) and those are usually held with torque-to-yield (TTY) bolts which are single use only. They also require careful tightening with a torque wrench or they can snap or work loose. If your friend looks at you funny when you mention TTY bolts, I'd suggest politely declining his offer to do it. There are also a bunch of specialist tools needed to lock the engine so the timing stays correct: if he doesn't have those he won't be able to do the job properly.

  47. You don't have a spare second to think about it if it goes wrong in a Hawk at low level. This isn't the first time that an engineer has been killed in a RAF display team crash. The Vintage Pair crash killed one of their groundcrew as well. Terrible tragedy that the technician didn't eject in time; Our thoughts are with their family. RIP.

  49. Anyone can believe the theory or not as it does or can not just happen in theory but it can in practice with spirited / sporting driving in some cars, as many know over the years and with red or white hot brakes are not going to apply the brakes, and even in 2017 /18 might not want Auto Hold / Electric Handbrakes on when stopping with roasted / toasted brakes. As to the Citigo, then crap discs / crap pads more often the issue, hence the Threads & posts in this section where 'Brake Discs' have been replaced under warranty, even when some dealership employee said 'No way Jose'. Skoda UK & Skoda CZ (VW / SKODA / SEAT Bratislva know the story. Suppliers of components / lack of Quality Control, suck it up and replace.
