  1. Today I decided to solve a problem I've had with this car since day 1, the USB connection. There's nothing wrong it, but I hate that it is exposed. On previous cars it would be hidden away somewhere and I wanted it to be that way here, particularly now I have the CarPlay and my phone is always plugged in. It would be great to have it plumbed into the phonebox, but that's a no go as my iPhone 7 Plus is too large to fit with a cable attached, so I decided to route a wire to the centre console. The only part you will need is a spare cable. I ordered a 2m one which turned out to be a little overkill, 1.5m would be a nice length, but Apple only do 1m (that would be tight) or 2m. No, I didn't pay the £29 they charge for this, but I wanted a genuine one as I have found the cheap cables don't sync with CarPlay. The first job is to remove the gear gaiter, there are 4 tabs to pry and it comes off. Give the trim a good pull and it comes off with 3 connectors to unplug. Set that aside, then remove the USB/Aux trim. Ideally, you should remove the radio screen and climate panel, but I've done this a few times now and I know where the tabs are to pry. A little tug with a flat blade and the trim pops off easily. Remove the plugs and then place the trim to one side. Now remove the phonebox or ashtray. I have the phonebox, so there is a plug for that underneath and the wiring for what I assume is the LED bulb that lights up at night, set that aside and you should have this view. You can see I have routed the cable up and over the dash support bracket at the back and then routed the cable under the phonebox base and by the heating duct for the rear vents. I taped the USB end in place to avoid it coming loose and shoved it on top of the support bracket where it is nice and secure. The next job is to make a hole. I can make this bigger anytime but seeing as I'm a committed Apple user I decided that instead of routing a USB plug extension into the cubby (there is plenty of space to do this and you could make a factory neat job of it too) I would just run a lead as there would be one less plug connection. If Apple change from Lightening to USB-C or I decide they are getting too expensive and I defect to Android in a few years time, I can just undo this work and re route a new cable, it'd be very straightforward. With this in mind I wanted a small hole as the plug end is small, so I brought out my Makita mini impact driver (other drill brands are available) and drilled a hole just big enough for the cable end in the corner of the trim. Next, feed the cable past the handbrake lever and through the hole. The cable is so thin and the mat is slightly small anyway so it just fits back in with no adjustment needed. I decided for security and peace of mind to tape the cable to the trim so it won't come loose and interfere with the handbrake mechanism. Do this in maybe 2-3 places. Do a quick test to make sure the phone is read by the stereo and then you can reinstall. 'But Sasha, what do you do about the big hole the USB used to live in?' I hear you ask. Well, that's up to you, but as you know, I have a spare OEM socket from my old MIB1, so I have clipped that into place for now just to fill the hole. I intend to install a USB charge lead here for the passenger to charge a phone and I will splice this into the 12v feed. With everything complete it is time to stand back and enjoy CarPlay with no visible wires. The phone fits nicely in the centre console, but you could just as easily route it to the glovebox or anywhere else you like it. You can see just how much excess wire I have here, but I only store my phone in there and I know have the Phonebox free for other things. Much better

  3. I've had my L&K for over a year now, and love it to bits, but I've always been a bit disappointed that it didn't have paddles on the steering wheel for the DSG, so after a hunt on eBay I sourced one from a 1000km Superb in Germany, and got it delivered for 159 Eu I didn't want a vRS flat-bottom, so it is literally a paddle version of my own wheel Yesterday I finally got around to having a go at fitting it myself, after the usual contact with my dealer said it couldn't be done I did it by the book, using a scredriver at the back of the wheel to release the airbag, then disconnecting the battery and waiting about 20 minutes before removing it, then a M12 spline bit on the nut to remove the wheel itself Lining the wheel up was pretty straightforward, as there are marks on the wheel and the spindle to assist Then plug the airbag back in, reconnect the battery, and the job's done, no coding required If I can do it, anyone can

  4. Hi everyone, First time skoda owner here but it won't be my last for sure! Purchased my 1.4TSI Fabia vRS only 3 weeks ago but it wipes the floor with every other car i've owned or driven! Looking to do a little bit of modifying to him and enjoying a matching drive with an Octavia vRS.

  7. Hi, Joined the community to day as I've recently bought a German Octavia Estate 2011 and needed to change the KPH digital display to MPH - a few forum searches and a link to a map and hey presto a fellow Skoda owner has the solution and he's just a mile away! A short phone call and visit and its all sorted... thanks JJC for sorting it so quickly (and changing a faulty lamp at the same time) A MAZ ING! Pint or two on me next time I see you down the boozer, you're a star! Great to be part of the community and a big hello! hayzie

  9. OK, this took far too much planning and forethought (including practising when to hit the reset on the trip counter), and I also did a very odd journey home (involving looping up and down the Thetford bypass a couple of times) to make sure I was on a quiet road so I could stop and take this photo: The fact that the temperature gauge got in on the act was a complete fluke and I didn't spot it until I looked at the photos later on! As someone said on the Facebook Skoda group, if only I'd been 4 minutes faster...

  11. Got a colour edition as a hire car while my Fabia is in getting some damage fixed caused by the dealer! 17 plate colour edition and first impressions are what a fun little car and well put together things like the indicator and wiper stalks are much better quality than my mark 3 Fabia. Pros: nippy, well built, can take a pram and a couple of bags of shopping in the boot Cons: 3 doors is not good for a young family of a 3 year old and a 11 month old, but it is a hire car at the end of the day! If I had the cash and needed a second car for taking to my work then a Citigo would be on my list. Davy

  12. I once drove a hire car starting YF 06. The last letters were GJO. It was a silver but a Nissan Micra. I hope that helps narrow down the last three letters for others.

  15. I don't think that's enough information for anyone to guess whether it was theirs or not, god knows why you don't just put the reg. number up then someone might remember. Reg. numbers aren't exactly confidential since you drive the bloody thing about with it on show front and rear past thousands of people every day. Not exactly a secret.

  18. You can throw in many cases where a lot of money has been sent with zero results. Whilst I feel for the families, even they have to begin to accept after years and many millions spent they are unlikely to ever find a truth that satisfies what really happened.

  19. Media driven? A 3 year girl disappearing sells far more copy than a twentysomething airman, who in turn sells more than a homeless person freezing to death?

  21. my honest opinion would be that some have cases have a higher public profile than others and hence will gain more support for continued investigation. Whether that is 'worthwhile' depends...

  22. @KenONeill - My title may have been meaningless to the query but I have the excuse of not knowing what I was doing. You knew what you were doing when you made your rude, unhelpful (and meaningless) comment. Feel like your time could've been better spent advising rather than criticising. Perhaps next time you should heed the advise your mother undoubtedly gave you when you were younger - "If you have nothing nice to say...don't say anything at all". @sepulchrave - Many thanks for your reply. The problem is now resolved thanks to your helpful advice. @JWvrs25 - You were quite right. I was a little confused, it was reassuring to receive a response which recognised my lack of expertise but offered helpful support nonetheless.

  23. Reason for the change from 205/40R 17 to 215/40R 17 is that is the size on the Sister 180-185ps Twinchargers from VW (Polo), SEAT (Ibiza) & Audi (A1), They even gave those heavier cars lower Co2 g/km figures and a VED band lower, and less squittery handling. they were even OEM or optional sizes on the lesser powered Polo, Ibiza & A1's, then on lighter Mk3 Fabia.

  24. I for one think the mesh parcel shelf arrangement to be a touch of genius. If you want to put taller items in the boot you just roll it back, you don't have to take the parcel shelf off and store it somewhere like you would with a hard one. I know plenty of other cars have a roll away parcel shelf and you are able to do the same. The difference with the Skoda offering is you don't have to roll it back to access the boot, it just comes up out of the way automatically like a traditional parcel shelf.

  32. That's why I don't boot it in 1st and 2nd gear, but use the 467NM or torque instead. Got 44.0MPG going to work today and even let a 600BHP Bentley Continental GT overtake me because he could afford to get 15MPG probably all the time and I like to get at least 430 miles from my 50 litres of Shell V-Power at £1.30 per litre, other cheaper, inferior fuels are available!

  34. Apologies, I missed the bit out in my previous post that Skoda intend to use a lengthened version of the MQB A0 platform for both the 'production Vision X' and the new Rapid. The Arona and T-Roc use the standard length MQB A0 platform. Info on the new rapid here: http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/skoda/rapid/100638/new-2019-skoda-rapid-to-become-czech-brands-vw-golf Comparison figures gleaned from various sources: Length Width Width Height Wheelbase (with mirrors) Yeti 4222 1793 2087 1691 2578 Vision X 4250 1800 1500 2645 Arona 4138 1780 2566 T-Roc 4234 1819 2590 Karoq 4382 1841 2025 1603 2638 Ateca 4363 1841 n/k 1601 2638 Tiguan 4486 1839 2099 1632 2681 It might need a bit of a Google translate but there's a bit more on the Vision X here: https://www.autorevue.cz/nejkratsi-testovani-v-dejinach-autorevue-ridili-jsme-skodu-vision-x Okay, so the interior is flight of fancy stuff but the outside is no doubt going to be pretty close (hopefully!).

  35. Undeniable that there are cases of fraud at local and general elections in the UK. The country with no ID cards or requirement for Photo ID as a UK Resident or to be on a Electoral roll. People need not have a Passport or a Driving Licence, and many have not, or Driving Licences and still no Photo Card. They do recounts and all the rest but in the UK it is a cross in a box at a Polling Station or on a Postal Vote and as open to anyone casting that vote. Security and policing is a joke. Sometimes people are found out, and sometimes voting papers are void, but the results stand. So that is Democracy. 1 person 1 vote and who really knows who casts them, Best re-run the last General Election. Or maybe not.

  38. For the power available it is remarkably economic. I average 35 mpg pootling around the lanes. On a long run I can get over 40mpg. I would describe my driving style as progressive and I often use the loud pedal for overtaking. However, in 'true fun' mode it is a little more thirsty And you can have some true fun with it too. It is a very smooth car with power available when you need it or choose to use it. As a comparison I had the 150TDI from the early S3 production; averaged 45-50 mpg but was nowhere near as smooth and comfortable.

  40. Mine has lost £2k in value from the price i paid in july 17 to the price i would expect for a private sale now, figure will be £3k if i part ex it or sell it on to a trader or wbac type place,a few months ago the market was flooded with loads of R's for sale as the lease deals were finishing, now there are not so many for sale (my local dealer hasnt any in stock) & this is helping values at the moment.

  42. Options are wonderful things, but cost a lot of money to add, cost money to fix when they sometimes go wrong and “usually” don’t add huge value to the cars come sell time, just a bit of desirability. I’ve had to reign in the options on my Fabia, I picked things that I would use and wouldn’t cost the earth to fix outside of warranty, (plus I had a budget to stick to). I would probably of ticked every box if I let my heart rule but thankfully the head kicked in on order day!

  43. For those allowed a vote it was 1 person one vote and free to vote one way or another. So many never voted, and those that did had their chance and the result stands. That is the democracy. What a bunch of whinging poms that are wanting 2nd go at it. They sound just like those that lost the Referendum for Scotland to leave the rest of the UK and want a neverendum.

  47. You can control the stop/start by the amount of pressure you apply to the brake pedal, a light pressure will not activate the system, you need to press quite hard, so you soon get used to controlling the stop/start by varying the amount of pressure you apply. If you leave the Climate Control on Auto, i.e. with the air-con turned on, the car will not mist up at all. Air-con is not just for summer it should be left on all year round as it dries out the interior during the damp winter months and keeps it mist free. The system is also intelligent and will turn on the demister automatically in the unlikely event of misting on the screen.
