  1. Whether its a BLT engine or not Timewarp, it needs doing at 4 years regardless of mileage. The difference appears to be that the ASZ needs doing at 60K (if reached before 4 years) and the BLT at 80K (again if reached before 4 years).

  2. If the handbrake is used, it means your brake lights arent on. This can be courteous at night if the person behind you has stopped and your not moving for a short while due to traffic lights etc.. If the person behind you hasnt stopped, then you might prefer to put handbrake and footbrake on to ensure rear brake lights are shown.

Also, if someone hits you from behind and you have your handbrake on, if your foot slips off the brake (as it is likely to do) there is less chance of you being catapulted forward.

My clutch is standard, and its harder to engage when cold, and shudders a little. Once its warm its fine.

    RBW,

  3. Car is over three years old now. 'Only' warranty problems have been leaking door, drop links (sp?) and turbo replaced (thank god I didnt need to pay for that).

Just had a letter from 'Retainagroup' (International security register) to update my ownership details on the etched number used as security and there was a leaflet in here which offered the ability to extend the warranty.

So car has 50K on it, does 400 miles a week and is driven in a progressive manner...

I dont know the cost yet, need to phone them tomorrow but expect it to be between £200-300 per year.

Anyone taken this offer up from Retainagroup ?

    Any opinions ?

  4. r1chard, I have an 06 plate VRS, and on this engine (BLT) its 80K or 4 years, so yours will need doing next year when its four (if you dont reach 80K this year). Im on 50K now, and have just booked in for a lube service, but when it hits four in March next year even if I am under 80K the belt will be changed.

I had a letter fairly recently from Skoda re-stating this, that the belt should be changed at 80K or four years.

    Cheers.

  5. Why on earth do Skoda make this so confusing.

Agree with above post that 4 years or 60K is the accepted time, but I have a letter from my dealer recently with the following in CAPITALS.

"WE HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED BY SKODA UK, TO ADVISE TIMING BELTS TO BE CHANGED AT 4 YEARS OR 80000 MILES WHICH EVER COMES SOONER. DEPENDING ON THE ENGINE CODE"

  6. Is it odd that my car hasnt (according to the service history) had a spark plug change so far ?

Whilst 50K miles is an interim, I notice in the service schedule in the book is says that every 60K Km the fuel filter and spark plugs should be changed, so assuming this hasnt been done yet should I ask for that on top of an interim service ?

    Confused..

  7. Sometimes its just good to have a change. Have a test drive and see what you think. I tried the Dooper recently and thought it was really nice (the wife has a Cooper S, but I do a lot of miles), and the chassis was ace. I did try the previous Mini D (not a Cooper) and it was just too slow.

It didnt feel (and isnt) as powerful as the Skoda, but after three years with the Fabia I would happily make that swap, not because its better, but because its different.

My wife is on her second Mini and has had no major problems, and as mentioned residuals are pretty good. She spent 16K on her first mini cooper (including 5K of extras on an 11K purchase price!) and got over 50% back of the TOTAL price after 5 years.

Let us know what you do !

    Cheers.

  8. Had a courtesy car today whilst my Mk1 VRS Fabia was in the garage for a few bits and pieces. I was really impressed with it !

The looks of the MK2 have been slowly growing on me (after initially hating it), and the courtesy car looked very smart in a gunmetal grey (sorry not sure of the actual name).

The Auto was a dream to use, smooth gearchanges and the only criticism I can level at it was that the fuel economy wasnt brilliant (29mpg on a 30 mile run).

The car's suspension was excellent, and much more refined than the Mk1 (although obviously this wasnt a sporting model, so higher profiled tyres and softer suspension). I found I could take speed bumps comfortably at 30mph, when I would take them at 20mph in my VRS.

The cabin feels really big, but it's quite a narrow car, which I really like for threading down the country lanes, and darting through gaps in traffic. Im quite tall, as is my wife, so the cabin of the Fabia suits us as its quite upright compared to some superminis.

Roll on 2010 to see if a VRS appears, hopefully with 7 speed DSG and either a powerful and efficient petrol or diesel.

    Cheers.

  9. Unless he has had the Jabba or Whiteline fitted himself then they dont have one as standard...

Im sure there is a point to that comment somewhere, but I cant find it, but its very nice of you to reply on the OP's behalf.

even with a rear arb you have to be being intentionally silly for it to come round on you... Fabia is a understeery beast

Again, a very erm, 'useful' comment. Have you sucked all those eggs now ?

  12. Answers

How do they really stack up compared to their VAG brothers?

Same if not better in some respects

Only downside is some peoples badge snobbery

Just a comment on this.... I own a Fabia vRS, (looking at an Octavia vRS CRD). Do you think the 'Noise, Vibration and harshness; (NVH) are the same in a Skoda than an Audi ? I doubt it. Also the paint on my skoda scratches and stonechips exceedingly easily.

Don't get me wrong, I believe Skoda is a value for money brand, but I think there are differences between Skoda -> Volkswagen -> Audi. Many shared components, and as long as you know what the differences are you can make an educated decision (I decided on a Fabia as opposed to the VW equivalent).

I suspect that the differences are engineered in now, for example how much extra would it cost for a skoda to have as robust paint as an Audi or the same level of insulation ? A few pennies per model ? But to do so would detract from the prestige brand of Audi if you could get exactly the same thing cheaper.

As to the badge, if your bothered by that you wouldnt be looking in the first place :).

This isnt a negative post, just be aware of what the differences are and make your choice.

  13. Hiya all,

Had a new turbo fitted last week by the dealer under warranty, car has been fine but today the power has dropped noticeably and every time I boot it, I hear a whooshing sound inside the car (from the bulkhead area).

I am assuming something has popped off, but when I checked under the bonnet, the big plastic air feed appears to be still connected OK to the turbo.

Any ideas of where to look ? And do I need to take off the plastic engine cover ?

    Cheers
