  1. When my fitted Bridgestones needed changing I swapped to Barum Bravuris 2 (195/55 R15, 85H): it was SWMBO'd who commented that the Roomy 2 (07, 1.9tdi) was quieter. I recently changed the rear set, again going for the Barums. Definately quieter all round though I shall keep an eye on how long they last.

I found these two websites useful in the decision making: http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/ and http://www.blackcircles.com/tyres_uk.

With tyrereviews, follow the link on the right hand side Reviews by Vehicle - Tyres for Skoda - Skoda Tyres: the Bravuris 2 is at the top of the list! A local deal on the tyres also supported my change from Bridgestone.

    Good hunting.

  2. The model that has served me well for a number of years is a Vanguard MP-15 (http://www.amazon.com/Vanguard-MP-15-Lightweight-Monopod/dp/B00006JQLD).

The foot pad is really useful as I can ensure minimal movement no matter what the terrain. The click stop system for the leg works effectively and I feel is better than the friction type stop. The unit feels it 3lbs weight but that solid feel helps in stabilising the camera. You need to be aware of how high the unit is when fully extended, you don't want to be bending down!

  3. I am 6 foot plus a few inches and have managed to sleep in the Roomster. Back seats folded and tucked up in a semi-sitting position. Slept well enough but had a few aches for the following few days. A word of warning, never assume the inside of the car will remain warm and snug. Even in summer (when it comes) there is a night time chill that penetrates the interior.

  4. Well spotted young lady, I am sure your Dad will buy you something special this weekend!! Fortunately, or not if you are one of my children, we have had very little snow this year. The lack of snow has meant that the children now watch the news so they can keep pointing out the places that do have snow...

  5. I too am not keen on the Nanny state: there again I do not understand why others have to pick up the bill for someones chosen foolish life style. As for smoking in cars, my father in law smokes a pipe at full volume insisting it is his human rights! Needless to say, we no longer accept lifts from him nor does he travel in our car. Surprisingly, it was our children that ask for the arrangement. None have been car sick since!

  6. Excellent result for you. I agree with gjib, TomTom updates can be a problem. I have the 1000 go and current up dates just don't finish. Their tech side are aware of the problem but it is still ongoing as it has been for three months!!

  7. Leon, really sorry to here of your plight. The truth is that there are some very weird people out there and they are not Skoda drivers... I recently witnessed an elderly lady try and drive a Range Rover through the rear wing of a Mercedes (supermarket car park). She was going to drive off. Having managed to stop her I too was amazed at the foul language and the threat 'I will run you over next time I see you in this car park!' Fortunately the Merc driver turned up and he managed to match the woman for expletives. I left them to it...

Regards your damage-I have not used glass restorers but recall seeing something in Halfrauds that purported to erase minor scratch marks. For the paint work I have used Chips Away (local franchise) to restore scratch damage; not too pricey but felt it was an excellent job done. Have you been in touch with the police? The note and the damage would suggest a visit from the old bill would be in order.

Hope the rest of this New Year brings more cheer.

  8. Have you had a look at this site: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/RealMpg/Results?manufacturer=skoda ?

The posting for the 1.9tdi are a good match to those I have experienced. I have no reason to believe that the figures for the 1.4Tdi and the 1.4 16v are not then genuine. If that is accepted as the case then using local fuel costs £1.399 for diesel and £1.309 for petrol you should save about £8/9.00 or so a month using diesel.

Whether you match the HJ website fuel consumption figures depends on your driving style. Further, the cost of diesel seems to rise above inflation and common sense on a regular basis. What the future holds depends on the level of acceptable profiteering by the fuel producers.

A simple double check on road tax, insurance, tyres, servicing, etc set side by side for each vehicle will also give a good guide.

Hope the above helps gather your thoughts.

  9. Ethel, I totally agree. The clue is in the word 'FOG' light. The number of muppets driving with all their available lighting on seems to be increasing: as such other drivers are met with an oncoming wall of light. Our local PCSO has said that there is nothing legal or illegal about the use of fog lights, just recommendations. Sorry to say but I feel that fogs lights are the most hazardous form of lights misuse there has been for some time.

  10. Kit, I have used CCleaner for many years and can recommend it. Never have I had anything deleted that should not have been. Unless you are experienced in computers, use only the default setting, that is, do not change any setting once the software has been installed. If you want further advise and confirmation of how well received CCleaner is have a rummage in this forum http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/forums/1/helproom/. If you use the search parameter 'CCleaner' you will get a number of responses.

  11. 2 Tank fulls! At the moment I am reluctant to go through that regime.

I note your comment regarding the ecu having to relearn and have picked up that comment on other forums. Wasted some of the works time today searching for comment on BP Ultimate and find that there are wide variations in experience: some very good, some very bad.

The 'Honest John' website carried a number of comments that lead me to understand that there will not be a significant increase in mpg: certainly the ecu relearning may have improved the figures over time but not enough to justify the increased price per litre.

On a separate topic, some of the 'Honest John' responses also comment on reduced engine noise/improved winter starting/smoother power delivery. I really didn't notice any difference, there again, I wasn't expecting it either. Again, maybe a longer (less shocked) test would reveal those benefits.

  12. I really am struggling with the fuel consumption figures. Run to and from work usually shows 58mpg, managed 44 mpg!! So annoyed that I have topped up with the local supermarket in the (vain) hope of diluting the stuff already there.

Now I know why it was called BP Ultimate!

I am planning a long run this weekend to get the tank emptied and refilled with some proper juice...

Has anyone out there any reasoned explanation as to why the engine should be so badly affected by a change of fuel supplier? I presume that all fuels have to meet certain requirements?

  13. SWMBO'd topped the car up for me before we took off for a long weekend. Shock at her paying 149.9 per litre. Standard round here is 136.9 for supermarket best. An even greater shock when the fuel consumption figures came in. A regular trip across North Wales and round the hills brings in between 55.00 and 63 mpg. We have just finished the trip on 43.4 mpg!!!

The loading was nothing different and the driving similar. No greater volume of traffic either.

I really disappointed and will certainly never make the same mistake again, simply can't afford it at those figures.

Pity as the weekend has been great, just need to wash the camping/walking kit...

  14. I have yet to hear a sensible explanation as to why heavy goods vehicles decide to overtake one another on a hill - one doing 55 mph the other 56 mph! A run out along the North Wales coast (A55) seems a prime spot for such tom foolery...

  15. rob-s- I have the 1.9 TD 2 spec. I think a quick troll through the various comments on this forum will highlight some of the issues others have experienced to date.

Have to say that mine has been fine. My only grumble is that the radio aerial is a pain and I must find a dry weekend to have a go at fixing it.

Fuel consumption has been a mixed bag. True figures for a run to and from Newcastle upon Tyne, four up, 55.3mpg. Run to Edinburgh and back, two up plus luggage, 51.8mpg. In the last 3948 miles I am averaging 52.8mpg.

We have three mountain bikes and I found that the Thule external fit unit is so much handier. When it rains I get the bikes cleaned for free and the car interior stays clean (except the spilled coffee/cake/sandwich crumbs, etc).

This web site http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/ has a car by car guide also a recently started thread that tries to establish true fuel consumption figures for different makes of car. Give it a go and rummage round what is there, nothing to lose.

    I wish you good hunting,

    Salut

  16. lemonvrs, sometime ago I posted a link from www.honestjohn.co.uk site. I have just had a quick look on the honestjohn site but cannot find the original storyline. My engine is a 1.9PD unit and therefore may well have had a different running in process , if any.

Are there any words of wisdom in your handbook? Have you had a chat with the supplying garage?

If I recall correctly, one view with the CR is that you simply drive the car in the normal manner, just try to avoid the higher rev range for the first couple of thousand miles. I have no doubt that others will contribute as the day goes by.

In the meantime, welcome and enjoy your new car whilst the sun-shines.
