Steering wheel judder

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have this peculiar problem with my Octavia II.

The steering wheel starts shuddering and it feels that the wheels are jumping when the car approaches a speed of 95 kmph. This shuddering continues till 1105 knph and then the car runs smoothly again. The same happens in the reverse order too, when I drop speed.

The explanation given by the Dealer was that the tires are out of balance. The tires have been balanced at different workshops , but to no avail. Now I have replaced all the 4 tires and now the problem seems to be magnified. Can anyone throw some light on this matter?

What can be the possible cause?

Would be highly grateful for your suggestions

If the BBC's Top Gear Christmas Special is typical of the road conditions in India then I'd be getting my wheels balanced without tyres, if not then I'd be looking closer at the suspension for damage/wear.

Sounds like the wheels are damaged beyond repair. get the the wheels balanced with no tyres on them, that will give you a idea if the wheels are badly out of balance.

No , the wheels are not damaged. Yes ,getting the wheels balanced without tires seems to be a good way to get around this problem. What do you suggest , get the wheels balanced without tires and then after mounting the tires?

To be honest if you swapped the wheels around and still have the same problem then it is probably entirely unrelated to the wheels. That doesn't help much but I am not sure what other rotating components could cause this?

If you get the wheels on a balance machine without the tyres, it will give you a yes or no answer strait away if there is a problem there. if the wheels and tyres are balancing up ok without to much weights, then you could start tp look at the drive shafts. Dont forget to look at the under trays on the car, if they come loose they will flap about in the wind under the car. my friend had this on one of his cars and you would not believe the vibrations this caused.
