Please forgive my ignorance, but could someone please explain the differences in the 244, 252, 268 durations.?

I understand the job of the cams and how their shape effects valve open/close durations but how is that governed by a 3 digit number?

3 digit number is the angle in degrees that it has the valves open........................

so a 244 deg cam has the valves "open" for 244 degrees out of the full 360 degrees that makes one complete rotation of the cam.

A "wild" or "lumpy at idle" cam would be the 292 degree cam!..........usually anything beyond 260 deg considered "wild".

Re your "diesel" sounding tappets...................................fit better oil....do an engine flush using wynnes first and refill with Mobil 1 0w40 and fit a new oil filter......if that doesn't solve it then fit new OEM components...

Linky to my post on Wynns engine flush

http://www.briskoda....s-engine-flush/

Again sorry to hijack "Daves" thread.....but as we all seem to be owners of the same engine then some info sharing in one place can't be bad eh?

EDIT......mine only sounds "bad" tappity when starting from cold on a cold morning....after 10mins all ok and quiet!!!

I think thats one of the problems with the 16V engine. When I had my 16V serviced (as a part of the sale agreement) the guy who did the work at the independant insisted that 5W30 was the correct grade to use. He got that info from the local motor factors!

It would appear that there is a conflict in what grade of oil should be used! (sounds familiar with all the Mk1 Fabias :D)

Yeah, I put 10W40 GTX in first, then realised it wasn't great, so that went into stocks for the Polo MPi (also an oil drinker), and started running it on Edge 5W30. It doesn't sound clattery though and it pulls like a train, but it still has a bit of an appetite for the stuff.

Haynes states 5w40.......to 20w50....or better..........so needs the upper limit to be 40 or more....and the lower limit (for cold starting)....down to 5....I have mine down to 0..............

Also can't remember off the top of my head what the maintenance section in the car book says............but using a 3w30..or 5w35 in the 1.4 16v ain't good.......maybe in the 1.4 8v MPI....but not our engines!!

sorry to be a pedant but this information is a little bit inaccurate, valve timing for engines with hydraulic lifters/tappets is not measured at the lash point (valve to follower contact point) it's measured at 1mm lift, so the actual duration of the cam is more than stated.. also valve duration is measured at the crankshaft, the cams turn at half the crankshaft speed..

i dont want to **** on your fire here but i would also question the wisdom of fitting fancy spark plugs and leads, the oem leads are a very high quality tripple insulated type so the aftermarket type like magncor are more or less identical, there are also no benifits to fitting iridium tipped plugs either, the oem spark plugs are a multi-electrode type which is far better suited to a wasted spark ignition system due to the hugher duty cycle of the plugs in that igniton system type

1....was trying to be clear and non-technical nerdy to someone who has no idea...

2.............if ABT do it then it is done for a reason...............also please explain the immediate noticable difference to my car after I had done these changes........................and don't give me any of that "placebo" carp!!!!!

abt are in the business of selling stuff!!! at the end of the day a spark plug is a spark plug, it doesnt make power, the fuel mixture doesnt burn faster, you dont magically gain anything by changing the plugs, unless you are replacing tired old worn out plugs with new shiny iridium ones.. you dont get a stronger spark by using using 'better' plugs because the voltage output from the igniton transformer is unaltered..

a ht lead doesnt affect the quality of the spark, you either have a spark or you dont, like i said the oem leads are very good as they are

where??

i'd like to see it please

Nice to know that you are TROLLING me on the same old stuff.......

You see people he was Trolling me on this thread here....

http://www.briskoda.... fabia__st__60

This was when the owner "M1k32102" of the MKI Fabia tuned by ABT found it had 140bhp (he had bought it second hand and not known it was tuned!) .........

So as several of us 1.4 16v owners were discussing the tuning, "TeflonTom" along with "Sepulchrave" decided to TROLL....

So to the OP of this thread.........I am sorry that yet again it has attracted TROLLS ....all because I decided to post (pass on) my 12yrs experience of owning and modding a 1.4, 16v MKI Fabia...... :(

I don't think of induction kits as tuning I'm afraid. You need to wind you neck in a bit mate. How dare you call me a troll, all I wa doing is correcting a few things you've said. Your 12 years of tuning hasn't done much for you If you think spark plugs give you extra horsepower.

Fao TeflonTom, I'm not out to call anyone a troll or anything like that, and I really appreciate the advice from anyone, and fabdavrav does seem to know his stuff, having spoken to him via pm as well. So please, any arguments and such, please keep it off the thread, I'm interested in advice / improvements, not slagging off someone's knowledge. Especially with a title priding yourself of bodging. It really doesn't interest me and it is tiring to read, so please Tom, take it elsewhere.

Wow... That is all, as fabdavrav is obviously an expert I shall go from here, good luck with your ht leads or whatever you do with your money... If you ever need any advice on supercharging or turbocharging these engines I'm normally found bodging something somewhere in the felicia/ favorit section on here.

Okay cheers, as I've said I'm not saying I don't want your advice or anything like that, I just don't really appreciate seeing people slagging each other's knowledge / advice off on the thread :)

I have now received and "sync'd" my new three button remote from Robert at Key service!............so now have remote boot opening (press middle button and hold down for a 2 second count)

Can't belive that the cars left the factory with this feature and they didn't give out the full key to do this and mines the top spec!!...WTF Skoda?????? :wonder:

Very brief update for you, new years day with a chronic hangover, I knew I was still over the drink drive limit so instead of driving it, I decided to pull it apart :p

It was to install this though which I got at 55% off from the sales, twin usb input for iPhone / Android and bluetooth connectivity:

A8FD3E10-F9A6-4529-B56E-FF9512C08D67-341-00000027872123AC_zps346d3421.jpg

As I hate loose wires thought I'd install it properly, so pull apart the interior and various bits of trim, and mounted the mic in the courtesy light:

Just clipped in and it doesn't appear to have moved, my old man has some of that electricians flexible rod which is great for hooking wires too, so off came the A pillar trim (all clips remained intact too!)

Down the A pillar and secured with the other cables:

And then from bottom of A pillar through to behind the dash, around the glovebox pipe and light cable, and that's the job done :)

Also has a colour changeable panel, so green seemed the way to go and blends in quite nicely

Best thing about it is not many of the stereos out there are iPhone 5 compatible yet, this one is though and the quality of streaming from bluetooth is pretty much flawless. You can control it from the headunit itself, and that includes dialling as well (which I wouldn't recommend when driving as it's probably more dangerous than using the phone itself!)

Also picked up a brand new unused DEPO headlight for a tenner on the bay :) Has a broken clip, but it came with it and it's a very clean snap, so a bit of plastic weld will sort that one

Just waiting for some MTEC Cosmo Blue H3s to match the dipped and XTEC Diadem bulbs to arrive along with the other light and I can't wait to get them on :)

Oh yeah I taxed it too!

looking good, When I installed a sub in the boot of my old fabia, I had the glove box out, the passenger seats out, and pulled half the trim off the near side of the car to feed the power & signal cables up the back of the car. The reason i also had the sub on the passenger side of the boot is theres a nice earth point on the Near side rear wheel arch :D

Just a tip for the future ;)

I must say though, how on earth did you remove the 'A' Pillar cover? I could never get it off and it had been taken off before by a previous owner and creaked! drove me mad :D

Noted :p Don't think I'm going to bother with a sub, the amp in the new HU works really well and I get such a nice sound.

With regards to the A Pillar trim, not gunna lie, it was a ballache :D We've got an interior trim removal tool from when we restored the camper (yellow VW in the pics) a couple of years ago, so it was a mix of that and brute force. Went straight back on though :)

Got another bit update for you lot now (if you're not bored of it now!)

XTEC Diadem bulbs arrived so replaced the tango indicators front and rear:

ATS also gave me some interesting valve caps with my winter rubber, not sure if that's their standard colour or they actually thought about it!

And I've finally got the new headlights fitted, looking miles better, though since dropping the bumper I can't quite get the panel gap right anymore :(

Next stage, well, after a full service in two weeks, I'm thinking Citigo badges and footwell lighting :)

Not really given much of an update recently as well, not much has happened with it!!

Given it a good clean inside and out as it was feeling very sorry for itself, the car park where I go running isn't really very well surfaced, so I've had a couple of McRae moments and the interior ain't pretty.
