Up to date Maps?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone

I'm just about to take delivery on a new Elegance 4 x 4 170 estate- I wanted to sense check that when I pick it up I have the most up to date maps on the Columbus unit.

Can you advise how I can make sure these are the newest versions?

Thanks

That only works in the "secret menu" is enabled - and I don't think it will be.

Make sure you tell the salesman you want an original DVD, V11 (8117 for West Europe, 8129 for East Europe) included with the car when you pick it up. If they tell you it's not possible to have a DVD, tell them if you're out and about, and the hard drive fails, you will still be able to navigate with the DVD in the unit, and you won't accept them delivering the car without the latest DVD included.

peterperfect - you'd be better off researching in the ICE forum...

I don't have an Amundsen but can see that there is lots of useful advice there.

Apparently there are a couple of major variants of Amundsens so be sure which you have.

Out of interest, salesman at garage where I'm considering an Elegance from said SD card has to be left in as it has latest version of maps on it for Columbus unit.

Is he correct on this?

SD card slot in my Passat CC is for stereo.

The Columbus uses DVD disk to update the system. Data is stored on the HDD. The manual recommends regular updates using a DVD. I think the trick convincing the dealer to do it free of charge

I am becoming really confused about the numerical versions of Columbus units. I phoned Skoda UK today to ask about Verizon 11! He went away to talk to the appropriate department, came back 5 minutes later apologised for the delay as he needed to check details. Bottom line, not aware of version 11. Would not recomend updating unless there is an issue with the unit. It does require CD update not SD.

Make of this what you will!

Could it be that mainland Europe has a different numbering system?

Could it be that the UK is being given the run-a-round?

Could it be that third party suppliers are peddling v10 as something else?

Think of changing my tag to Confused.com. :0)

Ŕaptor, youre right. Bought my elegance estate in may 12, at each service since, may 13 and 14 ive asked about map updates and service dept give me the brush off with dont think yours needs updating but when it does it will cost about £170 for dvd. Clearly theres been updates since I bought it but at £170 its cheaper to buy a garmin with free lifetime maps. Should updates be free? Well yes they should but I meant to say are they free at some dealers?

I'm sorry but it's just you. What is "Verizon" 11??

It's very simple...columbus latest map version releasedate was 27 January 2014. Map database is NavTeq database Q3 of 2013.

There are 2 versions, East and West Europe;

V11 (label on the box) or 8117 (official designation) for West Europe, partnumber in the official VAG supply chain is 1T0 919 859 B

V11 (label on the box) or 8129 (official designation) for East Europe, partnumber in the official VAG supply chain is 1T0 919 859 C

Any differences in "V" numbers are pure confusion. Generally everybody uses V11 for the 8117/8129 versions, and these are the newest. In January 2015 the newer versions will be called V12.

If you manage to convice your dealer to update your Columbus to the "latest" maps, it should say V11 or 8117 or 1T0 919 589 B on the box or disk, and when you go into the "hidden menu" on the Columbus you should see "8117"

There are no different versions for different countries. Newer maps do NOT add more options or features to your Columbus, that depends on the firmware that the Columbus has. Upgrading maps has nothing to do with upgrading your Columbus, it's a very different process altogether. On the picture above you can see this Columbus is running firmware 5238.

For the UK you guys all want the 7 digit postcode search, you need AT LEAST V7 maps and AT LEAST Firmware 2660 or higher. Beware, updating Firmware can damage your Columbus if you have an early unit and you flash the software to a firmware that is too high for your device. Better try to find a local satnav specialist who knows his business.

Now now TooTall let's not get pithy over a typo.

Also you have clearly missed the point. Skoda UK have not recognised a Version 11. Yet there is a lot of chatter about it on Briskoda.

Clearly you appear to have very detailed knowledge regarding the way in which VW work and I am sure we all grateful for the advice you freely provide.

You advised on November 2 to ask the salesman for an original DVD to be include with the car when he picked it up. Skoda UK advised they no longer supply disks as the software is preloaded onto the HDD. Unless of course you wish to pay for one. Confused?

Let's play nicely shall we and and either offer comments in good faith or deline to comment.

If these issues were obvious to the consumer there would be little need for numerous requests for advice on the forum!

Ah, Verizon has to be Version? I kept on wondering why a US telecom provider would have anything to do with navigation maps :D  If so it was a typo I guess.

Anyway.

I know they don't put a DVD in every glovebox, but when you order a car new or buy one second hand, demand a DVD (in print on the order slip) and creative dealers will help you out...

Regarding the whole version thing. If the latest maps are referred to by the internal VAG supply network as 'v11' and '8117', and your local knowledgeable garage calls it 'a slice of cake, or 'a bird', or 'a flower',  no matter, you should be able to sort it out by 1. asking for the latest version maps, and 2. identify the 4 digit number when the map is loaded on the Columbus.

No need to call Skoda UK to verify "V" numbers, they will not know. As demonstrated.

The information below is correct and these are the latest maps available for the RNS510/Skoda Columbus system as of today. I have not yet been able to source V12 maps.

PS. this will blow your mind;

I installed Columbus maps on the hard drive using the SD card reader yesterday

It can be done! Often DVD readers in RNS units break, or the DVD itself is knackered. So a workaround is possible!

@TooTall: You may have lost support for other languages installing via SD card. I did. If it bothers you, to get them back you need to reinstall the firmware you are already on. This doesn't overwrite the maps.

Didn't run into a problem with the languages, Dutch language was enabled (and speech recognition works too) - mind you this was on FW 4020.

Did you use the manual method or the compression tool?

Will check when I have the other car available to me again, but that will not be soon...

For me it's mostly getting fed up with paying some dodgy garage 75+ EUR's for the latest map, only to see them pop in a copied DVD without markings, stare at the progress bar for 45 minutes while they do another 5 cars this way, and driving away thinking "jeez...I could do that... :envy: " So now I can! :p
