Power Steering Failure

Recommended Posts

Been awhile since ive posted, and typically no news is good news, a briskoda post is bad news lol.

I own a 51 plate 2nd hand 1.4 fabia that i bought from my semi local skoda dealer. In the the last month or so my power steering has been really hit and miss to when it is there, so parking can cause a sweat at times ...

looking in the bonnet to find the power steering fluid to see if its been leaking to my shock  theres no resouvior so totally confused  not where the book says it should be got my dad to look and he said its electric, which i didnt know exsisted just thought its was hydraulic.

So with it becoming slightly unpredictable for when i get the power steering the car is booked in for a check on weds day with the dealer, as the car is still under the one year free second hand guarntee would a steering fault generally be covered by the guarntee? and has any one got a clue to where the power steering motor is on my car ??

Thanks

Alex

It's hydro-electric, ie a hydraulic system driven by an electric pump. First thing to check is the voltage across the battery. Do you get the PAS light on when it's not working ... if so, worth hooking up VAG-COM and looking for fault codes as it could be the PAS sensor which is a common fault :D

it came up last nite for the first time with a pas warning light which is what i have been waiting for before getting it looked at.

if it is a sensor related problem, more then likely, what would the rough cost be to have the sensor changed?

Just an update, took the car in today, oh the fun of being nineteen and knowing about cars ...

basically the "technician" or monkey as i like to refer to them as, first off said have u checked the power steering fluid, well i would if i could find, he then says its under the battery carriage, so he wonders why i didnt check ... take the battery and the holder right ... plugs his vagcom in find out theres a fault on the kwire the handheld and the one in the garage came up with the same thing, the guy then starts talking to me as an adult and says its most likely the angle sensor not the pump but they would have to charge three hours time to find the k wire fault and then time and parts to replace the angle sensor, all of which isnt covered by the used car warranty what a waste that is.

so basically wot i need to do is stick my old headunit in so that the k wire fault will disappear and they can then see on the pc screen that the car is fooked rather then actually directly look at the sensor which the guy thinks it is ...

If you pull the fuse for the headunit that will usually bring diagnostics back up again.

Also even though in the warranty books they term the steering angle sensor as a 'YAW' sensor it actually isnt. A yaw sensor is part of ESP and monitors the pitch of the car along its centre axis (front to back). The steering angle sensor just monitors if the wheel is being turned.

Check underneath that the steering rack is not leaking! I had a leaky stearing rack that was causing the same symptoms only that cost £330 plus vat just for the part from a specialist part dealer (the dealership was going to charge loads more plus even more for labour and they misdiagnosed the fault and they charged me for their misdiagnosis!). We did the job ourseleves and it fixed the problem.

It is still a real pain that you cant get to the fluid reservoir without removing the battery!
