Emissions update

Recommended Posts

Just got back from dropping my car off for MoT and cambelt/pump/stat. Written on my service card was DO NOT DO NOX UPDATE, per my instructions. The service receptionist asked if I was sure. I said "yes, unless you can tell me what the update does". She said they don't really know, just that it is a software update that "adjusts the EGR parameters, but we don't know which ones". She tried to convince me it wouldn't change the car at all, so I said why do it then? She was going to try and find out more about the update, but I am not holding my breath. She seemed keen to convince me, but clearly realised she was fighting a losing battle.

And interesting to note that on the service record, my car is described as an Ambition model. I guess the SE bit is just a UK boot decoration.

It would certainly "adjust the EGR parameters " in the U.S. for a big FAIL.

My guess

Outside of the U.S. (Euro5) it would pass but just not spectacularly

Assuming she is somewhere near right then it suggests that even EU cars need some kind of work to get them compliant (rather than just 'removing the cheat code').

SWMBO took her 170 in for some unrelated warranty work and was told about the recall... and kindly declined their offer,

IMO there will be NOTHING to gain from having it done and many people are claiming about either rougher running, using more fuel, or less power after the recall has been performed.

Andrew Walker They have released it in stages. The Superb was done first followed by the Yeti. All have been approved by the authorities now though.

Mark Jordan I've had my 2010 Scout done around a month ago.
The exhaust sounds a little throatier, and I now seem to have a developed small flat spot around 1900rpm 1f620.png????

Andrew Walker Carol. You are under no obligation to get it done.

Carol Morris I know and I am torn...likelihood is we will run it into the ground but if we did want to part exchange it's worth bugger all 1f641.png :(

Andrew Walker Why is it worth bugger all? We've not seen the value of part exchange drop due to this update.

Martin Owen Nope and no intention of getting it done either, it won't IMPROVE the car so what's the point?

Karl Abbott Lmao my brother had it done on his CR170. Skoda totally ****** it up. It left them having only 106bhp with them having no intention of sorting it out. He had to pay a specialist mapped to fix the issues they caused to the ECU map and return its power

Rob Dickens No loss of power on my 140 yeti but it is rougher and the mpg went down. ...... Will be seeing Ben Wardle quite soon 1f642.png:-)

Alex Cook I don't know why anyone would bother having it done. There's zero chance of it improving your car and no downsides if you ignore it. If you get it done, it may be fine or may harm power or economy.

Adam Lavender Had a letter for our VW Touran and dad got one for his Yeti. Not going to book it in.
Are they allowed to do it at a service without asking?

So nothing consistent

There are reports of no difference at all

The question hasn't been answered definitively

Seems like some dealers are unqualified to do the job to VW's standards.........perhaps

This isn't an exercise in mine's bigger.......

Correct, however by calling it an urban myth you obviously do not believe some people are genuinely having issues.

many people are claiming about either rougher running, using more fuel, or less power after the recall has been performed.

Who are these "many people", forum members of some sort?.

Read various comments on FB, several VAG forums (I’m on far too many of them) and the Ross-Tech forums.

It won't overcome the urban myth syndrome in any case

after I pointed out many people were having issues, you obviously were not convinced so I gave you a very small example of those who have actually had the recall done and are less than happy with the results.

I agree not all dealers will be doing the recall correctly, as some are useless... all the more reason to stay away from them.

There are also numerous very good dealers and Master Tech’s who actually know what they are doing.

It makes no odds to me if owners get the recall done or not, what is important is the owners make an informed choice, armed with the facts... the fact is several owners took a perfectly good car in for a recall and now have a car that is not as good, so it does beg the question why would you want to mess with something that is working perfectly, for no benefit?

  • 5 weeks later...

I had mine done yesterday and in my case the car feels a little bit sprightlier if anything. Time will tell on the fuel consumption but I don't see how it can be significantly worse. I also got a can of de-icer, ice scraper, 0.5L of screen wash fluid and 1L of engine oil FOC thrown in for good measure.

Interesting

What is the difference between the 140hp (EA189) and 170 (.....) version?.

Looking at the 140(EA189) version graph it looks like there is a smidge more if you give it a rev.

A known hill in top at 50-60mph would be THE test: whether it will stay in top or be forced to drop down for more revs to access the torque.

From what I've read an ~ 5mog drop is normal..........early days though

Pity I was a bit late for my appointment but I was thinking about doing an acceleration test before and after so didn't do it in the end.

I believe the main differences between the 110/140 hp versions and the 170 is a  bigger turbo and injectors on the high powered engine along with a different engine map.

I had my 2014 110bhp done a few weeks ago. My comments are not scientific, just observations.

I think I may be using a bit more fuel on my short commute journey of 5 miles each way. I usually get 48/52mpg on the maxidot at end of journey, but this seems to be showing 45/48mpg. Difficult to say as temperature has been cold and so I would expect less.

I had a longer run today, recording 53mpg, when I would have hoped for a little better.

I can detect no change in engine response/pull, with possible exception of it seeming a little stronger "around 70mph". If peak torque is coming in a few hundred rpm higher, as has been suggested elsewhere on the 140bhp tune, this might make sense.

I may have a better idea in a few weeks time when I have a 250 mile run, and then a 150 mile run with a caravan on the back.

The weather does play a big part in my fuel consumption especially with short journeys.   Mine is a 150, so not affected by the emissions, but doing similar journeys with a cold week (around 0oC) to the previous week (around 7-8 oC) there was about a 15% fuel degradation.

I had the recall carried out and I've noticed no significant change to my fuel economy. I actually just had the best average MPG for the last tank of diesel so far. Likely due to getting accustomed to getting the best out of it.

For the five full tanks of diesel I've used since owning the car I've got the following CALCULATED mpg:

39.27

39.52

39.76 (recall performed mid tank)

38.72

41.37 (today)

With no noticeable difference in performance.

I wouldn't be that concerned about a small change in mpg,it's what will the effect be on the DPF/EGR in the future with no guarantees coming with the fix from VAG as all they appear to quote is no change to mpg,as most of the vehicles affected will be coming out of warranty or are already out it will be interesting to see of any posts relating to this in the future on the Briskoda forum.
