Exhausts Baffled or Absorbtion

Looking for a new cat/manifold back exhaust for a non sporty car.

options are

aftermarket baffled in mild steel

custom made stainless steel, using two absorber silencers.

I’ve asked around and absorber exhausts area bit louder, but the exhaust company stated this and said they could make the silencer longer to counter this a bit.

question I am asking, is what sort on noise increase is this?

the car is petrol, no turbo, and used for longer drives.

the exhausts are practically the same price fitted, and I don’t imagine wanting to fit it myself, mainly because I would bet that manifold to exhaust bolts will rust solid.

that in mind stainless makes more sense, but not it it’s going to make motorway driving unpleasant.

thanks

I have a stainless cat back exhaust with two resonator boxes one large at the centre and a smaller one at the tail pipe and it is quite than the old baffled boxes. Resonator boxes are expansion box with no baffles and the size of these boxes determine the sound. Loudest being no box.

If you go for stainless cat back you need to declare it to your insurer, stating whether or not it has resonators. I did state for for longevity and resonated for no louder the a standard exhaust. It made no change to my premium.

Thanks for the info on the boxes.

The exhaust is being made out of dull stainless steel pipe, to replace the oem pipe that is rusted to hell after 12+ years

I am not knocking you, but I can’t understand why would the insurance care as long as there are no shiny bits or similar. It is dull stainless steel and would be the same as the oem bar the method used inside of the silencers.

If fitting a shiny exhaust or performance enhancing one sure. If wanting it replaced in the event of an accident sure, but the insurance wouldn’t care if I fit an aftermarket mild steel exhaust.

If there was an insurance cost, then I might as well just buy the ramps and DIY a mild steel one.

Your changing the exhaust material from mild steel to stainless steel which is a modification away from OEM . Some insurance company place an excess on . There are others that don't as they understand longevity, they're the ones that don't see it as a performance enhancement as long it's not unduly loud.

And getting an exhaust that does not have silencer baffles (restricted flow) is a through (unrestricted) flow and will yield a performance gain, whether be stainless steel or mild steel.

Loads of instances if one googles.

Lots on Pistonheads and not an Internet Myth of those not declaring having issues with Loss Adjusters.

Easy to Declare what you fit and no way should a Broker / Insurer be charging extra because a Stainless Exhaust or Any Replacement exhaust is fitted.

But then the question will be, 'Is it a performance mod.'   & they are only replacing a standard part if a claim for accidental damage unless obviously you have a Policy with Listed Mods and receipts etc.  'Specialist Cover'. Agreed Value.

I hear you. Wonder if I need to tell them if I fit a Klarius aftermarket rather than a genuine be one, just in case they get silly as it’s not galvanised like an own one.

if it was bling, I wouldn’t have an issue, but frankly I feel it’s gone a bit far. Soon you won’t be able to fit a coffee in your cup holder without notifying the insurance. God forbid if you have a tea at random.

anyway thanks for the info on noise, looks like I will be getting under the car to DIY an oem, as can’t be bothered with insurance faff.
