Engine cuts out after releasing key when starting (Petrol 2.0)

Recommended Posts

Hello, looking for some possible reasons for a new issue:

So when I turn the key all the way round the car starts and engine runs, until I release the key back to 'running' position, at this point the engine just cuts out, no warning lights present.

After usually a couple of attempts the engine will keep going and then run indefinately until it's sitched off again.

Battery is showing good voltage, no immobilizer warnings.

Any ideas what this might be?

Thinking it could be ignition barrel/switch but why does it keep going once it's away?

Thanks in advance for any pointers!

Of course might have to bring it to a garage but just had a large bill for other work so loathe to put it straight back in (did happen a couple of times before it went in so not related to any recent work done).

Definitely ignition related, playing with it this morning there is just an issue where the key has sprung back from the starter position to 'running' position, but if I rotate it back a bit more (quickly!) it keeps running, so there seems to be a dead zone between starting and running position which cuts the power.

So guess that is a new ignition switch to source - hoping it is just the switch part as the key is turning freely!

You only need to buy the electrical rotary switch that is mounted on the mechanical part of the ignition switch barrel.

There are post on here with explanations of how to do it. Do a search using  google with Briskoda as one of the search terms.
