OE Dunlop Tyres on Octavia II VRS cracked

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if anyone has similar experiences. I have the original Dunlop 245 45 17 tyres on my Octavia 2.0TFSI VRS, which has done approx. 6000 miles since new. Every tyre is cracking right around the entire circumfrance of the trye in the middle of the tread on both the inside and outside. I have searched the threads and haven't been able to pick anything up. Has anyone had similar experience? I am thinking of taking the car back to dealer and see what they say. Can't be right surely?? Wife and two kids in the car don't want to experience a blow out

That doesn't look good, mate.

I have the same type of tyres on mine and no cracks at all after 16.000 km. I would go to a dealer as the car is still on warranty, isn't it?

I've had big problem with Bridgestone tyres on my previous car, just after 4.000 km, and after few trips to dealer and complaints, they took the car to Bridgestone dealer and he replaced all 4 tyres.

Worth to try, just be persistant and don't give up. I've done it that way and ended up with new tyres all around.

Yes the same thing happened to me on my previous Octy. !7" Dunlops with cracks in all the tread grooves. I mentioned it to the dealer and they said there was no warranty on tyres and I had to approach Dunlop personally. My solution was to replace the tyres with Vredestein Ultracs because the OE Dunlops were rubbish. The Vredesteins were still on the car when I traded it in last month and they were almost as good as new. I thought that 3 years on that Dunlop would have cured the problem.

Good luck.

Cheers guys. Very worthwile advice. I'll get in contact and keep you posted. Got a feeling they might come it, but I'll jump up and down a bit and see. Afterall I bought the car from them not Dunlop!! I have another Skoda service dealership near me (Victoria Garage Maud). I know the workshop manager reasonably well, so he may help or give me advice to equip me to go back to the sales dealsership I bought it from (Specialist Cars in Aberdeen).

Unbelievable that tryes will be like this after so little miles. Not happy.

Somewhere on the side of the tyre is a date stamp, it will show when the tyres were produced.

The only time I have seen cracking like that was when the rubber was starting to go hard and brittle because of age. This was confirmed when they were removed from the car.

I wouldn't have those Dunlops again if they were the only tyres on earth. I'm sure something will show up in search as I have posted several times about them.

I got the car on 1st August, 0 miles on the clock on an 07 plate. It was sitting on the showroom floor for a while before that, but I wouldn't think that long??

My Car was a factory order and tyres were showing signs of cracking

within 5 months. Strangly enough the spare (which was never used ) showed no signs of cracking even after 3 years.

What price your safety? forget the cost.,,ditch the tyres and fit something which will keep you on the road better. I found that the traction and stability coming out of wet roundabouts was particularly appaling on Dunlops.

Make skoda pay for them.

I'm sorry I agree they should be replaced ASAP, but they have sold a car with tyres that are breaking up after an infeasibly short time.

The tyres are falling to pieces inside of a year and to me that is not fit for purpose. As you have already said, you bought the car from a skoda; in fact from the skoda dealer not dunlop.

IIRC in law they are the ones who cop it, nobody else.

I have just replaced my 06 vrs front tyres after doing 16,000 miles. Both tyres were just about down to the ware bar and after getting a flat i decided to replace both tyres. The thing is when I got to the garage I was amazed to find both tyres cracked around the tread on the inside of each tyre. Both had gone through the steel mesh inside the tyre and were only hanging together by a thread. the guy changing the tyres said he had never seen anything like it and was most suprised to find I hadn't had a major blow out.

I didn't bother checking the rears as they still had around 5mm of tread left and just thought the fronts had gone due to general wear and tear.

Also I've just had it in for a service.

Think it might be a good idea to whip them off and have a good look. The other thing is that you cannot notice anything wrong with them when they are inflated so to do a proper check you have to let the air out

Thanks to every one so far for advice and assistance. Phoned Specialist Cars (Skoda Dealer in Aberdeen) today and car booked in for Thursday. I explained what was wrong and they had no hesitation in booking it in. Positive signs so far, but we will see on Thursday. I will be demanding all four tyres be replaced with new, we will see if they will oblige. If not I will be on to Citizens Advice, but hopefully it won't come to that. I am not going in expecting a battle. If, sorry when, they agree to replace, do I allow them to replace with the same crap Dunlop again? I'll see what they offer and submit a post on Thursday night.

I also Emailed Dunlop. No reply so far.

Thanks again everyone so far.

Dunlop will say speak to your skoda dealer as they sold them to them not to you.

IMHO no, from what others have said I'd ask for either bridgestones or contis which were also OEM fitment.

But I guess if they want to replace them with Dunlops again, there is nothing you can do.

Don't worry, my Dunlops have no problems after 16.000km, and they are the same size and type as yours.

Went into Specialist Cars this morning. It was booked in as a warranty job, but without even looking at it they advised I was to take it to a tyre dealership, have them compile a report on the fault, pay for new tyres and Dunlop would then reinburse what they thought. I didn't accept this, so next they said they would have to contact Skoda for authority to be able to pay for the job. They looked at the tyres, agreed that they weren't right and made contact with Skoda who apparently weren't interested and told Specialist Cars to take it up with Dunlop.

I insisted that they replace the tyres. I mentioned sales of goods act and the fact that the car was bought from them, it should be them that replaces and they could take it up with Dunlop after. Their hassle not mine. The car has 6000 miles on the clock and is only 6 months old! I spoke with the Aftersales Manager and as a result I received 4 brand new Dunlop tyres on the car.

That is not all though. Having spent the entire day in the dealership, I get back my car with scuffs on the wing:scared: I went stratight back in and now they have to have the car next week to sort that (probably will buff out). It looks as if someone has had an airline over the bonnet, but that is only my thought. WHAT A DAY!!!

I must admit the scuffs hacked me off but they couldn't have been nicer and took responsibility straight away. Seems strange, legally I think they had to replace the tyres but that was hassle and legally they probably could have denied the scuffs, but they are doing that without the bat of an eye.

Advice to anyone, do like I did, wash your car the day before you take it in and make sure the paintwork is as it should be and check again when it comes back. If I had not done this, I would have missed and could not have proven it.

Thanks again for all the advice.

  • 2 years later...

yep, agree,

I swapped my dunglops for Michelin pilot sport 3's (on my VRS) got them for 500 all in at ATS. Best thing I ever did. Dunlops were useless in moderate icy conditions, handling was never great, couldnt tak the power and had very soft sidewalls - i know as made bulges where i went thru pothole.... I cant recommend the michelins enough and they have a nifty rubber guard on the edge of the tyre to protect the rim. Best Tyre ever had.

You're unusual zero mileage looks fishy, as there should be at least 2-3 miles on clock even brand new, mine had 14 miles on it, when delivered.

So car just coming up to 3 and half years old with 6,000 miles on clock, seems the lack of usage the problem.

Mine didn't start cracking/perishing until car was just over 4 years old at 40.000 miles on the rear which were never swapped around.

Have only seen 'Continental' tyres on any pre 2008 model across the Skoda range.
