Update and back to the dealers already

Featured Replies

Now the initial excitement has died down a bit, I thought an update may be appropriate 6 days and 540 miles on.

The main thing to update from my first report (24hrs & 100 miles with a Yeti) is I have a problem, namely a dash that rattles creaks and buzzes. I noticed a little bit of creaking late on Sunday but since then getting progressively worse. What noise you get and its location depend on the time of day and obviously the road surface but even a smooth surface has thrown up the odd creak here and there. Called into the dealer today but as usual they only got to hear some of it, so I might be looking at a few trips to get it all sorted. Technician was most surprised, “shouldn’t happen on a Yeti” (So why on mine then!!!).

Makes you wonder if the person who put my Yeti together was on their very first shift; particularly after finding a valve that had not been fitted correctly. Don’t want a repeat of the regular trips to the dealers that I have had with the wife’s Corsa over the last three years (4 aircon pumps plus some pipework, starter motor, radio, display unit, driver’s seat base and both window regulators and rails).

Besides this slight black mark in its copy book still very pleased with the Snow-monster, I am finding overtaking particularly straight forward with the improved view and the very smooth and linear power delivery from the 140 CR engine, a vast improvement on the 140PD. Although I think it may also have something to do with gear ratios. As stated before I have to hold a lower gear for longer than in the Golf with the exception of sixth, which all makes for good overtaking but that final gear is possibly a bit too short, as I have noticed the Yeti’s engine gets a little more vocal at 70 and above on the motorway (more noticeable in cruise).

After my first fill up I am quite happy with the initial mpg at 41; 355 miles on 39 litres. Computer reading now rarely in the 30’s with 48 being the best average on a run so far.

Will keep you posted on the results of its trip to the garage late next week.

Review of functional options fitted

Hill Hold – found it a bit disconcerting at first but now would defiantly recommend it, works a treat.

Light Assist – Like the daylight running lights, the leaving/coming home function and that the lights do their own thing. Less impressed with having to quickly move from auto position to dipped beam (lights go out momentarily if you go slowly through the sidelight position) if you want to select fogs.

Off Road Button – waiting for an opportunity to try it out.

Corner Fogs – depends on the amount of street lighting as to whether you can detect they are on or not, work well when manoeuvring in unlit areas or dark country lanes where you have to slow right down for a sharp bend. Be interesting to know the reaction of other drivers that are faced with this when I am indicating or have the wheel turned waiting to get passed a parked car. Think they are growing on me for their quirkiness but to be honest they are expensive for little real benefit.

Hi I have recently spent some time with creaks and squeeks around the instruments on a Yeti. Are the noises you experience affected by temperature?. I have hopefully cured the noises but i did find some of the noises dependant on cabin temperature.

Sorry to hear about your hassles, Plumber. Hopefully you will not get the run around from the dealer, and your issues will be resolved.

Hmmm..I'm sad to hear about the creaking sounds from the dashboard on your new Yeti! I have driven a few of them now on everything from new smooth asphalt roads to mountain gravel roads and even up and down a ski hill without hearing a sound that shouldn't be there. The fact that the Yeti feels like a very well built car with a nice and stiff body shell when you drive it was one of the reasons i ordered one

I sure hope your dealer sorts out all the sounds that shouldn't be there, but I know from experience that tracking down creaking and buzzing sounds sometimes is pretty time consuming. Let's hope that won't be the case for your car!

I also hope that this is a single case, and not a "Yeti disease"...

I'm happy to hear that you are happy with the car overall, and that you picked out options that actually work well! :):)

My car is now at the docks in Oslo waiting for it's PDI scheduled for tomorow :D If I get really impatient I might just go out there to pick it up in the afternoon instead of waiting for a car transporter to trailer it to work on monday :P

Hi Andy,

interesting to hear that my Snow-monster is not alone, although not very good for either of us.

The most regular creaks and rattles appear to come from the steering column /main instrument area, although the Tech who came out with me today thought more towards the A pillar. These do not appear to be affected by anything in particular come an go as they please, rough or smooth road surface.

Had one or two creaks that appear to come from the dash top centre to nearside, again no apparent trigger other than a slight bit of road noise.

Most noisy problem but thankfully least frequent (so the Tech didn't here them) are buzzing and creaking sounds from the central area, climate, radio and vent. When I first heard it I thought the fan had over sped or its bearing was on the way out. Since then I have had about three different type of noise from this area. This might be temperature related as it mainly occurs first thing in the morning although there have been the odd occurrence later on but less vocal.

Dropped the Snow-monster off at the dealers, hope they look after her. Always remember getting the wife's previous Fabia I back from fixing a radio reception fault; GS screwdriver marks on the surrounding trim where they had prised the radio out. They at first could not understand why I was rather unhappy.

As is typical the noises have been more subdued over the last couple of days, although this may have something to do with me dropping the tyre pressures as they were slightly overinflated from the standard load setting.

I have a Fabia II as a courtesy car, first time I have driven the Mk II; not as nice as the Mk I. Anyway the reason for mentioning this is that it rattles as well, this time from the passenger door area. Think Skoda need a new QA guru, standards appear to have slipped over the last couple of years.:(

Hi all.

The plumber, this is my story:

From my thread http://briskoda.net/...-4x2-adventure/

"... Only one annoyance encountered: I ask you can verify it on your own. I said: the frames of the two silver binoculars instrumentation creak. Try to touch pushing with your hand. Make noise? Or: Put pressure on the eyelid above the two binoculars down. Make noise? I noticed bumps on strong and with the radio off. But little things bother me. ..."

UPDATE NOISE...

"... I'm going crazy. A radio turned off, I discovered another noise and I can not understand what the exact point of origin. It 'a little noise that you hear on dips or undulations very pronounced. By ear comes from the right side of the dashboard height, so to speak, of the mirror outside. Another detail that does not convince me is the pillar front of the windshield. Pressing played does not seem fitting to the mast. Who can occur Yeti? Today I did Rome-Milan. Nothing to say on road handling, comfort and performance. Everything is really good. Unfortunately when I turned off the radio, I have focused on noises and lost serenity."

UPDATE NOISE2

"I have identified the area of origin of the noises I mentioned: pillars, behind the plastic. I do not dare to touch anything, because I think there are also behind the air bag.

Other opinions are welcome from holders of Yeti, also on the finishing of the lining of heaven came to the upper edge of the windshield, like ending the finish? "

The workshop have solved something about the sounds that you felt from the driver?

Hi,

she's done just over 4000 miles now (well maybe as I am on smaller winter tyres and over-clocking) and as always I like to give an objective view;

Creaks, rattles and chattering

remedial work done to both the inside and outside 'A' pillar trim, various unidentified parts of the dash and the storage box above the centre vents has been replaced. unfortunately still have a number of noises from the dash including the new storage box. These generally occur first thing in the morning when it's particularly cold; not helped by the roads round here. There quite rough at the moment; big patches of that horrible surface dressing they put down in the summer has lifted and broken up :( Difficult to get fixed as she's pretty quite at the dealers :S

Also had creaking when opening the tail gate on occasion, tried Agerbundsen's recommendation of lubricating the rubber bump stops but without success. Again a cold weather thing.

Alarm

gone off on it's own accord twice I think, plus once with a moth fluttering around in the cabin

Radio

not sure if this is a problem with the transmitter (out of my control) or the Monster but over the last couple of weeks had problems with a local radio station. This operates on 96.9 FM and on I think 5 or 6 occasions the radio has for no apparent reason changed to 97.0 and lost the channel. Also had other occasions were the station name has been replaced by the frequency number and the manual tuning graphic at the bottom of the screen has appeared :wonder:

Vibration

again over the last couple of weeks I have noticed a mild and inconsistent vibration through the foot pedals and rest and occasionally the gear selector and steering wheel. Feels like tyres but just sometimes gets worse when I load the engine a bit such as acceleration :wonder: :wonder:

Been to the dealer a number of times with the rattles and I'm fed up going there and I bet they are non to pleased to see me back again either. So for the time being I am leaving thing as they are. Will be changing back to the Dolomites in three or four weeks (weather depending) which should I hope will cure the vibration. If not then I might relent and plague the dealer again.

Would have been nice to have a well behaved Monster but not to be and despite the above I would not swap for anything else; she's just B):)

Regards,

TP

I'm not having a go at the posters here and I can sympathise with those who have seriously annoying noises as a result of sloppy workmanship or ill-fitting components BUT...

I've always perused the car forums of the particular make and model of car I'm in the process of buying and you can bet your bottom dollar that one of the most common threads will always be about the elusive bumps, squeaks and rattles. Now, whether I've been really lucky or it's the fact that I accept that any car I purchase (unless it was a £200,000 Bentley or Rolls Royce) will inevitably and eventually make a few noises after use on British roads and will loosen up with time, but I've never been bothered that much by the odd squeak and rattle. I had some odd noises coming from the air con on my Golf GTI Mk V, my MR2 Roadster rattled a fair bit and even my current TT creates some odd noises from time to time. Unless it was something obvious that could be pinpointed and resolved easily I don't see the point in wasting a lot of time making regular trips back to the dealers getting frustrated engineers to replicate, source and attempt to repair that "faint squeak from somewhere behind the dash that only occurs for 10 minutes after starting the car".

I can't help feeling that there are a percentage of drivers out there who always consciously listen out for every little sound that "shouldn't be there" and spend more time worrying about squeaks and ratlles than just accepting the fact that all cars make noises and enjoy driving the the thing. There will always be a simple and easy solution - turn the radio up!!

There! I bet that's got some people rattled!!!

Very fair point DC and in general I would as you suggest ignore the odd noise or two but unfortunately the visits to the dealer were for more annoying and loud renditions, probably the worst I have come across in a car and tuning the radio on at normal volume did not drown them out. :( One of the sounds I get at the moment although very intermittent is of a high order when it comes to decibels.

I class myself as unlucky with this one as most of my previous Skoda's have been well made and my first Yeti (had to reorder; wrong spec delivered) is I believe with Yonderend in Scotland and proving faultless :)

Would also like to make it clear that with my posts I am in no way complaining; more informing other SMOC members & guests how I and my Monster are getting on, particularly as she's one of the more mature one's

Understood and appreciated TP  It does sound like you are one of the few who has good reason to take their's back to the dealer to get sorted out and I truly sympathise with the ****-up on delivered spec. That must have been intensely frustrating :'( , especially as you are aware of that one proving to be fault free.

This post was just my "light-hearted" observation after being on quite a few car forum sites and coming across this very popular topic.

Just so you know 650 miles into ownership snowmonster of mine has mis-behaved with the occasional rattle and buzz, all thankfully intermittent, have I think narrowed them down to dashtop box lid, 'chrome' speedo & rev counter trims and a really bad one which tutned out to be the loose rear seat-belt retaining strap 'popper' rattling against the window.

I'm with you in that I hate rattles and squeeks.
