Previous offers from MSE has been that if we book as a group of 10+ cars they will give all drivers a session of tuition with one of their staff (of whom most are race winning race drivers)

I assume that this will still stand for 2010 but can check should there be enough interest in a particular event.

Bear in mind that while it may look like i work for them I do not, I just feel that they served us well last year so deserve promotion! :)

would be interested in coming to at least one of these days out with the Fabia vRS - but could you tell me where all the circuits are pls - perhaps identify the nearest big town. I know where some are but not all - thanks

Just noticed a few few mods in your sig. Naughty Boy.

me? never :) but everything listed was present at Hullavington and Colerne

Thanks for the info - I am based in Fareham so most of those tracks are within a reasonable travel time.

For a first time which one would you recommend or are they all about the same?

The car is as it came out of the factory, so do I need to prep anything for a track day - and more importantly what is it going to do to my tyres/brakes etc as i will need to drive it home at the end otherwise the wife will not be to pleased as it is her daily driver !!

Hi Brian,

TBH any of the MSE Airfield days could be considered for a "first timer". Being relatively inexperienced on track myself (6 laps of Castle Combe and 2 airfield days) for me it was more about the organisation of the day and feeling comfortable getting used to things. I feel very comfortable with the organisation of the MSE days and the "we won't stnad for any F00king about" mentality.

I had some trepidation on my first outing @ Combe and with hindsight doing an airfield day first would have been a better way to learn the limits of the car due to run off areas etc. You always start out slowly until your confidence builds so i wouldn't worry too much about any lack of experience.

For me the knowledge that I have to drive the same car home at the end of the day is sufficient to rein in any over enthusiasm.

Car wise I wold check the following:

1. Ensure all your fluid levels are checked (oil, brake fluid, etc)

2. Double check your wheel bolts are tight :S (and re-check after a few laps)

3. Before going on track remove anything from the car that could (when loose) cause injury to you or passenger in the event of an "off"

4. Unless you're really caning it, tyres with a reasonable amount of tread should see you through the day, alternatively get a cheap set of alloys and tyres for use on track and then it doesn't matter if they get damaged and your everyday wheels will remain pristine!

5. Personally I will allow the car to cool down between "sessions" throught the day usually going out for about 30-45 mins at a time.

Attending with other forum members means that there's usually a "pool" of tools, knowledge, experience and people to have a natter with B)

To be honest I would imagine they are all much-all of-a-muchness.

All are based on airfields so you can push to the limts and beyond (as a couple of us found out a Colerne) safe in the knowledge that there is no chance of armco inspired body modifications!

Having been to both Hullavington and Colerne I would say Colerne is a better track but Hullavington isn't far behind.

The only issue i have with both are that they features a long straight into a hairpin then another long straight before getting into a techincal section, but being based around a runway this is to be expected i guess.

The effect on your vehicle will be dependant on how hard you push.

I'd advise that the car is serviced close to the day but it's not essential. Fresh oil and brake fluid (5.1 high boiling point stuff if possible) will make a fair difference in performance and thus enjoyment though.

Make sure you have plenty of meat left on brake pads as these will take a fair hammering. I did a 15minute taster session at Castle Combe on brakes with just a few mm of life left and within a couple of hard braking zones I had a soft pedal, a worrying burning smell and had to ease off!

Rubber is a bit more difficult to call as it;s the one that could get you in trouble on the drive home.

Personally I'm lucky enough to have a second set of alloys so did my first day when my road tyres were down to their replcement indicators.

The second set of alloys with fresh rubber was brought along and changed to at the end of the day for the drive home.

I know that a member here have started the day at Colerne on almost dead tyres and swapped to brand new rubber at the lunch break to increase grip, and was fine for the drive home and i expect has done a few thousand miles on those tyres since.

Another member at Hullavington started the day on brand new rubber and i expect is still using it on the road 6 months later.

Whatever you choose to do it really is excellent fun and if you tag along with a group of us then you have the back up,support, and knowledge of fellow Briskodians to call on!

Hullavington 28th May sounds interesting. B)

Personally jase I'm eager to explore new tracks. Ideally a proper circuit but Abingdon seems to be airfield based but have a circuit like shape!

Abingdon on the 7th??

*****DAMN YOUR SPEEDY REPONSE BARRIE!*****

Nice to see we think almost exactly the same though!

Hi Brian, I agree with jonny5 and pastyboy, all good advice. One important point to note is your insurance does not cover you when on track days nor could you expect anyone else on the trackday to re-imburse you should you have a collision. There are special track day insurers who will cover you but they are expensive. I haven't had a problem with this and as long as you follow the trackday etiquette, always explained on the day, you'll be fine. Sometimes there maybe an aboslute idiot driving on a trackday but they are soon spotted by the marshalls and dealt with. It would be good to see you join our little band of Briskoda Trackdayers so keep an eye out for trackdays on the forum.

MAY???? Thats 5months away. There must be something to go on before then!!!!

TBH someone (usually Ed aka yegnold) will pick a date and we all book off our own back. It easier that way.

I think that perhaps othes are more keen than Ed for days this year, being a girl, he only did half a day last time having used half a tank of diesel PAH!!

fair enough il keep an eye out for dates ive got a non skoda friend whos up for too so will go up when were both free

I'll be back full time on the track day scene soon - maybe - with a "proper" car that can embarass most of the Skodas.. :D

I might do another one in the Fabia though, if attendance is high at one of the airfield days. Still don't fancy stuffing it in to armco to be honest.

I doubt I'll have time to pick and arrange a day this year so might hand over the responsibility to anyone else who's interested in doing it.. if they are, give "natasha" at Motorsport Events a call and say Ed from Briskoda said to get in touch about arranging a group booking. :)

What's an infield? :giggle::doh:

  • 1 month later...

Ed and Natasha and the ME crew do a first class professional job organising these events. They will tolerate NO messing and it makes a great environment for complete novices and experienced peeps alike. There are always race experienced trained instructors available at nominal cost to go out with for a session or two, which for a beginner particularly, is well worth it.
