Upcoming improvements to Octavia road noise insulation?

Featured Replies

I'm looking to buy a Octavia Scout TDI and have come across a rumour I would like to know if anyone else have heard.

When I talked informally to a former Skoda sales person (who now are selling VW, but still recommended me to go for the Scout :-)) he told me that starting from production week 43 there will be improvements to the Octavia when it comes to sound insulation. With those improvements the road noice in the Octavia would drop to the same level as in e.g. a VW Passat. Road noice is obviously still an issue with Octavia, and improvements like this could be worth waiting for ...

Interesting. Apart from my crap clutch it's the weakest point of my car.

The question is if Skoda would try to keep the lid on about an improvement like this until it's actually in production ... Could hurt sales both to admit that there is a road noise issue, but also that there is an upcoming solution to it.

IF this is true I wonder if it can be retro fitted to FL Octavias for a reasonable fee. And when I say reasonable I mean cheap given it probably should of been there in the first place!

While they might fix it, I would think it's unlikely to be as good as doing the job properly. A little bit more material and some under seat foam.

I was thinking of doing a group buy on a sound damping material for people to apply for the boot floor, but need to chat to the vendor to see if this is an option.

After applying sound insulation under rear seat & 'boot' floor of Vrs Estate, my Octavia is quieter than my previous car, 2007 Passat saloon. My only gripe is trye roar which I put down to the tyres, as the car is silent of proper road surfaces (which unfortunately are rare around the peoples republic of Reading). Im going to change tyres soon & will go for ones that do well on sound tests, on the Which magazine Tyre tests.

If it really bothers you something like Dynamat will give you a much better result than any $2 solution from the factory. Remember that the factory will always do the bare minimum, cheapest solution to any issue not the best solution.

I would be interested. I was thinking of doing the boot floor, spare wheel well and under the rear seats.

VW appear to have been quite successful with the Mk 6 Golf, so carrying this onto the Octavia would be an option.

The FL Octavia already has some improvements, for example revised door seals, but these only help the wind noise.

Ditto, I'd be interested as well in a GB, was you looking at someone like Noisekiller?

I'm looking at a few options, but the leading one is a dynamat extreme type product, which should come in at a very good price.

I'll start a group buy feeler thread once I've had confirmation from my contact at the supplier :)

EDIT:

Now done and here:

Wrote to the factory regarding possible sound insulation update from week 43 and got this reply today.

thank you for your interest in our brand. Some innovations for model Octavia are planned 45 calendar week. Unfortunatelly retrofitting sound isolation is not possible.

With kind regards

Black to plan b then. Will be interested to read more of your solutions, before making my decision of what to fit in boot and under rear seat.

But wasn't the roadnoise isolation already in the improvements for the modellyear 2011 (after week 22) ?

Im sure i read somewere about roadnoise isolation from the new 2011 version... Im i totally wrong here ?

I wouldn't read too much into them saying it can't be retro-fitted. Skoda say lots of things can't be retro-fitted when in fact they can be.

For a novice who is about to order their first Skoda.... When is Week 45 (November?) So to gain from this, one would need to delay their order?

Thanks.

I've seen lots of mention of road noise problems.

I've just got my week 20 Octavia Scout, and it's probably the quietest car I've ever driven!

I wonder if they've got the issue sorted, or whether I just have lower expectations (my last car was an 11 year old VW Passat)?

I think the Scout is probably the model that suffers least with its higher ride height and suspension. The vRS is at the other end of the scale and can be pretty noisy on poor surfaces.

Could someone confirm this ?

You might not be able to delay your order without incurring significant delay - if your model is earmarked for a particular slot (mine is a 4x4 due production in week 41) you might have to wait a particulalry long time for that model to have another run on the line. The 4x4 Est may only be on the line from week 38 to week 42. If I were to delay to my order to post-week 45 it could be several months before a 4x4 Est line starts up again.

Would it be possible to get more details as to what those "innovations" consist in? Could you get more info from your contact?

emailed factory again see below - They sent reply Asked me to contact Skoda UK Customer Services - who I rang today. They informed me that UK Sales not aware of any upgrades! and asked me for a copy.

Will see what sort of answer I get

placed my order with on 11/6. Build date now confirmed as week 44, following the summer factory shutdown.

Octavia VRS CR DSG Hatchback in Race Blue

Front and rear parking sensors

Auto dimming mirror / rain sensor / light assist

Bluetooth multifunction steering wheel

MDI cable

Temporary spare wheel

You informed me that Innovations for model Octavia are planned 45 calendar week

· Who can advise me of what are the changes for VRS CR DSG?

· Would my car get these if built during week 44?

· Could my build date be delayed to include the revisions?

· Should I get the order number from the dealer to assist you?

I do appreciate that the provisional build date could change, but as this will be my first Skoda, I do not want to miss the opportunity to receive upgrades and subsequent benefits.

Thanking you in anticipation

Week 44 by my reckoning is the very end of October. Four and a half months lead time from placing an order to actual build for an Octavia? Add to that 3-4 weeks delivery to the dealer. Seriously? I ordered a Scout with lots of extras just a couple of days before you and have been advised provisionally that it will be delivered to me in New Zealand by the end of September. That said, I don't yet have a build date, although I do have a factory order number of 900179 if anyone knows how to interpret these things. That's starting to sound optimistic to me. I think the DSG gearbox mated to the 103kW CR diesel will be an option by October, which would be my personal choice over the 6-speed manual, so if I get offered a build date similar to yours, I may well look to amend my order to include the DSG box.

Before factory shutdown, Skoda UK advised build date changed to week 38, so would have to cancel current order and reorder to get upgrades. Not worth it in my opinion. Today build now week 40.

Anyone else found build date gone back again?
