The LED Journey..

Featured Replies

Hello!

Gonna make this thread my experiment with LED's thread.. I've got a couple of plans with some LEDs.

1) Under door LED's (in pic), Im unsure about these as they look a bit too much, hence why I've only done one side  .. I just wanted subtle subtle lighting.. I'll stick a few more pic's up when its actually dark.

2) Boot LED's (still contemplating placement, I saw grr ones and it looks good, would be default choice, but I have time to experiment so will try new style)

3) DRL's, some silly bolt on ones and its on the way, but planning to mod it to take 0.5w (or 1w) 10mm LED's (if possible), think they'll look much more original.

Anyway here's the 1st pic..

I quite like the under door lights idea, kind of like a "puddle light" when the doors are open - I am sure placement under the mirrors would be more difficult.

You can get DRL's with 5x 1.5w LED's, for example http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ring-Aurora-BRL0397-150mm-LED-Daytime-Running-Lights_W0QQitemZ300436470702QQcmdZViewItem?rvr_id=&rvr_id=&cguid=89a6536f1250a0aad0e4a474fc6f72ae not sure if these would fit the Fabia well though. (Edit: cheaper here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ring-Aurora-LED-Daytime-Running-Lamps-BRL0397-2-Pack-/290350256030?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item439a394f9e )

Thanks for comments,

:o £50?! Im getting these budget casings for ~£5 plus 10mm leds for ~£4 and I still think its too expensive! Its single line 6 LEDs, and doesn't use the SMD's (as they heat up compared to the non smd's) Don't worry, pic's of them will be up in due course.. ;)

As for under mirror, yeah its a tad more difficult but not overly.. need to drill some holes though.. don't think these strips have enough power for lighting the floor from that height.

Edit: now that it is night time...

Looks white and not blue.. I just dont know how to use the camera properly (not mine, don't like it.. its the Panny TZ7)

Annoyingly.. I hooked them up to the red lights... they DON'T switch off when you close the door..!

Right, found my thread again.. now for part two..

I wanted to dabble at some DRL's but the after market ones you get are not very bright (Unless you pay extortionate amount :giggle: ), so I thought I'd get the casing of the cheapo ones and put high powered LED in them.. simplez!

I also don't normally give picture guides but since its still on the table...

Original size

Packet of LED's..

SNV84840.JPG

120k mcd, 0.5w.. aka.. slightly brighter then originals.. :smirk:

Difference in size..

SNV84843.JPG

Waiting for high powered resistors atm as I 4got to get them.... :dull: plus I also need some diodes.. so its not going to be finished till next week sometime.

I have a question for you all.. which place is most subtle to place the LED's?

I think the middle. Looks like undercover police lights.

Middle! will prob look better in the dark too

Middle!

If God wanted you to have chavvy christmas fariy lights on the front of your car He would have made you buy a new Audi, and for that reason I suggest the best position for those lights is in their box and back on eBay :giggle: :giggle: :giggle:

I kind of agree believe it or not, im doing it more for functionality than style. I much rather have one big fat LED facing forward to people can see me (pref. get out the way also :D ). Unfortunatly they don't exist yet so these will make do.. If these aren't bright enough it won't stay on the car .

I thought, £10-20 materials and a couple of hours tinkering isnt too much to ask for if it does the job I want.. ;)

It's only toys for boys, you go right-on ahead and do what you think looks good. Bless...emoticon-0105-wink.gif

think they'll look cool once they're working! And defo the middle. I've always wondered if you could just get the housings etc of the new octavia and just wire that in and put it somewhere on the bumper similar to the octy??Or are they ridiculously expensive :wonder:

Thanks for the comments guys, will remove the fog surrounds and have a play to get a good idea.. (need to find how to first  ). More to come next week.

Yes, the vRS is my toy :giggle::thumbup:

Question: Is there a wire I can splice which can be used as an ignition live in the engine bay? i.e. I want them on as DRL's so they must be on when the ignition is on. Preferably something that can be replaceable if things go t**s up. If so, could one give me a clue where it may be?

I don't want to run a remote wire from the HU.. :dull:

Resistors came today (ordered wed's night, arrived today  ) so pretty much completed now, except for question above.. Here's the finished product..

(bit trigger happy with the camera, :p ), brightness can be better, but I kept it in very safe limits of the LED (using 14v as my source voltage).

Some of the expensive off the shelf DRL's somehow automatically detect the voltage increase when the alternator kicks in and turn on, then turn off once the voltage drops on being turned off. Don't know if this gives any inspiration. As for a switched live I assume something is switched on to the ECU when ignition is switched on and maybe that would have a little extra juice to power up a relay.

thats a nice neat install mate gj :)

Looks pritty good - bet even better at night (with xenons) :)

I really like the door ones, great idea. Unfortunately I really don't like the front ones, looks very Chav-wannabe-Audi.

Of course it's your car, do what you think looks good.

  • Author

It is boarder-line wannabe-audi for me lol. I tried to make it as subtle as possible (i.e. OEM+) but its difficult with aftermarket stuff.. :S Im sure it'll grow on me though..

The plan for lighting is (thanks anewman for inspiration) - using a relay to switch on the DRL when the:

a ) interior light comes on

b ) ignition switch comes on

This will mean I need to run two wires from the inside to the outside.. :dull: couple of diodes, fuses, relay and should be fully done by tomorrow.

I've enjoyed reading this thread and have to say I'm well impressed, looks really good!

Nice work

Good work...

Tidy install but couldn't you get/make slightly longer lamps to

fill the horizontal gap more fully. Still looks very good though.

I love a bit of LED action me... :D

When I get round to it I'll be doing my footwells next.

Thanks,

Yeah, unfortunately this was the biggest size available :(

Im gonna pass on the footwells as my interior led and puddle light is bright enough to light pretty much everything around the car :giggle:

After attempting to get some relay's from Maplins and failed because people who works there has NO experience on electronics what so ever :dull: I found a relay in the engine bay! Location - Next to the battery, RHS.

It apparently connects to the glow plugs to switch them on on ignition . So I took the wire no 56? (Blue black wire) and linked my LED's with that.

A little weary with this set up as those relay's are a bit special and cost £50, also I have no idea where this blue black wire goes to...

If anyone knows feel free to let me know!

Next! The boot........... B)

Edit: Wire No 56 goes to the turbo switch (of some sort) as I found it.

MUST USE RELAY IF TAPPING ONTO THIS WIRE. Give me a PM if you need assistance on relays, but its pretty straight forward from images online.

[1 for 12v, 1 to ground, 1 goes to LEDs and 1 goes to trigger.]

Edited by JLneonhug

The power from that relay could no doubt be used to power another relay, and a relay would use less power than the LED's hopefully. Educate the Maplins people http://www.the12volt.com/relays/relays.asp :) When I've looked they usually have the basic automotive relays out on the shelves somewhere.

Ah yes, I meant no. 87 (blue/black wire) lol, but that is a wise plan, thanks.

Hello, Just put some LED strips on the parcel shelf for some boot lighting, I have a slight problem. When boot is closed and car is locked the light is still on, very dim but still on.

I reckon around 3-4v's... is this normal? :wonder:

Edit: I tapped it from the boot light.

That's got me wondering now... Does mine do this?

Mines connected the same way.

Can't say I've ever looked. Too late to go out and check now

the Mrs is in bed :D But tomorrow evening when it's dark

I'm having a butchers.
