Whistle noise when accelerating? Fabia VRS

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have had my 06 Fabia VRS for around 4-5 Months now. I have recently noticed that when accelerating and reaching between 2000 - 3000 revs the engine bay is making a whistling noise. It's fairly quiet and only sounds sometimes when going through the gears - but is annoying!

Does anybody know what this might be or has anyone experienced this before?

It doesn't sound like a belt as it doesn't sound screechy and only occurs when pushing through the gears.

Any thoughts anybody?

I want to go back to my dealer with a little insight.

Thanks,

Goli

Most likely be the turbo?

Yeah I thought it might be, not sure what might be causing it though.

Good thing is it's still under warranty.

It's normal for a turbo to make a whistle type noise under load, it's spinning at pretty high speed you know :-)

Andy

The whistle noise would be the turbo it can be heard more when the car is under a heavy load, full boot or 5 heads in the car.

I eventually realised I had a boost leak the top pipe of the intercooler was loose when going into boost it would just whistle, but not rev as hard when I first bought it, try connecting all the pipes up securley or do the cable tie trick it should stop any obvious boost leak, or you may have an intercooler pipe thats ripped which would then need replacing.

If its a police siren kind of noise as some have previously reported on here its the turbo on its way out, usually the turbo fins hitting the turbo housing when spining because the shaft is about to break or its lost its balance = new turbo

Its normal dont worry about it! Mine does the samething.

its called a................ turbo................... diesel..................

Drive it in thin cold air! it will sound FANTASTIC!

Just an update on this post:

The clips for the boost pipe were changed initially by a Skoda Garage under Warranty.

This didn't fix the issue and the whistle continued.

It went in again as the noise was only occurring under load. The turbo was then replaced under warranty.

Am I missing something? This guy had the turbo replaced because it was whistling? Was he serious :p

Take the impeller blades and shaft out of the turbo; should cure the whistle...

Whistling too much can indicate a turbo on its way out

They sound like a police siren when they have blade damage

Result with the warranty

Ah maybe that's what he was talking about. It did make menlaugh when I rear that he'd had the turbo replaced under warranty because it was whistling. I'll keep an ear out for the sirens :D

My car has a similar problem.

At 2k-2.5k rpm, it makes a screechy whistle (louder than the smooth, progressive, turbo whistle it normally makes)and then this dies down. This is accompanied by a slight loss of boost and then a shove when it quietens down at 2.5k. The turbo is still boosting but definitely not as it should. Has anyone else had this problem and fixed it?

I'm going to book it in for a pressure test as i've read elsewhere on the forum that a leak in the intercooler system could be the cause.

I'd be grateful for any help

Likely to be a boost leak, I had a similar problem. Cable tie crossed around the clips secured it in the end, look for the bottom and top part of the intercooler hoses they usually come loose overtime. Cable tie secured it & the whistle went away, if your boost pipes are on secure, it may be your turbo is on its way out many on here have reported it as a police siren at its worst. You could also strip the bumper of and take a look to see there are no holes in the intercooler allowing boost to leak.

sorry to hijack the thread but could someone take some photos of the pipes that need cable tieing.

I've got the same high pitched wistle, been doing it for about a year now but wasnt doing it for the first 4 years that i've owned it. So I just want to be sure I havent got a boost leak or something else!!

^^ cool, thanks for that.

Now, in the thread he stripped most of the front car off!! But to just cable tie the intercooler pipes do i just need to remove the headlight? ta.

Might be easier to remove the arch liner?

ok - thanks again!!
