Looks good but pointless like a Prius!

seems a bit pointless to put electric in a heavy octavia to drive around the city (which suits smaller cars)? like the roof though.

Yes but as a percentage of the overall weight the batteries in an Octavia adds less than it would have in a Fabia. So the performance is still OK and the boot space goes from Boing 747 to 777.

I love the roof!

On the Skoda auto website it says the roof is like it is because it contains photo voltaic cells to help recharge the batteries.

I was about to say solar panel roof, to recharge it when parked up for a couple of hours.

Have to be some monster cells to be worth it though :eek:

If it's totally leccy, then I think it would be better as a city wide small van/delivery system than a round town car.

This is just a PR stunt to appease the greenies, VW have already stated that they do not see a future for all electric cars. It will, no doubt, come to nowt. There's general public ignorance about the implausibility of fully electric vehicles.

here's just a few points.

Battery technology will *never* be able to remotely challenge the energy density of diesel/petrol/liquid fuels. Fully electric cars will always have pathetic range. (Sticking in a petrol engine to "extend the range", is just cheating.....)

Nobody ever talks about battery life, battery replacement costs, and the environmental issues surrounding their manufacture and disposal.

There will never be an infrastructure in place capable of handling the recharging requirement of millions of these cars, overnight, never mind within a few minutes......

When you look at full life costs and full life cycle environmental impact, conventional ICE cars win hands down. Electric cars always depend on government subsidies - i.e. you the taxpayer giving away more of your money and getting nothing in return.

Hydrogen is the only way forward for now.

been reading this today only 140km range per charge...................................not overly useful. Defo a PR stunt just to make it look like they are trying to be green.

The very over-hyped Chevy Volt will have a range of only 40miles! So this Octy is actually pretty good if they can deliver what they promise.

The very over-hyped Chevy Volt will have a range of only 40miles! So this Octy is actually pretty good if they can deliver what they promise.

Actually the Chevy Volt's range has just been revised down to "25 to 50 miles" - you can bet it'll be closer to the 25 miles (but only when new). Priuses and other hybrids suffer from deteriorating range as they age and the batteries lose capacity.

Think Laptops - my experience with (very expensive) Sony Vaios and more recently Samsungs show that Li-ion technology is not what its cracked up to be and in modern form have exceeedingly short lives. A little more than a year in the case of the Samsung with "cutting edge" battery management. The sony's lasted a little more than two and the replacement costs are !!!!!!!.

Yeah! We could have plenty of those here in East Anglia. Or how about from wind farms, which take as much energy to manufacture as they give back - eventually?

Top post from XMan. As he says, hydrogen is just an energy sink - it's nothing more than a battery. Any widespread grid electricity demand in the UK, eg, from plug in hybrids, will run into power generation capacity limits, even if powered up overnight which helps with grid load balancing. Our nukes, currently 19% of the National grid power, are all being decomissioned, all bar one by 2020. Hell, we'll be lucky to just keep the lights on during peak demand in the winter in years to come.

We'd better enjoy our Skodas, powered as they are by ancient sunlight dinosaur blood, while we can. Give it about five to ten years, if you take into account declining discoveries and reducing net energy from oil drilling - the easy stuff has already gone - and plummeting oil exports. Economies will collapse (completely) long before the last of the oil is extracted.

As soon as you get even a bit 'energy literate' you quickly realise we're stuffed. Party on, but best get growing that allotment...
