Sorry for the double posting but just to close the loop:

After ejstubbs posted here that his T5 centre caps did not fit I did a bit of research and found that a VW T5 in fact uses a 5x120 stud arrangement vs the VW Caddy and Yeti that uses a 5x112 arrangement. So I have to admit I led people up the garden path here! Although my first caps (the ones with the written words VOLKSWAGEN and no VW logo on the photos of this thread) were advertised as from a T5 they were in fact from a Caddy! Hence my own confusion.

So to anyone out there trying to source centre caps do NOT buy T5 cente caps. You have to find the far scarcer Caddy ones.

Mine fitted OK, but I kept the plastic caps on the nuts which will have helped them stay on, as I have the T5 ones with VW on them.

Sigh...

After a trip in to central Edinburgh yesterday, including a couple of cobbled back streets, and a brisk-ish run along some twisty roads out of town, I got home to find that three of my centre caps had disappeared. :'(

I had noticed earlier in the week that there was a small gap showing around the edge of each cap. I just knocked them back in place with my foot, whilst formulating a plan to pack out the clips with a bit of electrical tape to make them grip the security nuts a bit more firmly. Unfortunately I was persuaded to run SWMBO in to town first thing yesterday morning, and by the time I got home the damage had been done.

Oh well, they only cost me £6 including postage. Back to eBay it is then!

In the mean time I shall give some thought to how to avoid a similar disappearance in the future. The usual way with fake alloy wheel trims is a couple of silver cable ties. That approach won't work with these ones because they don't extend out far enough to cover the ring of holes in the wheel. Anyone got any good ideas?

For other people's information: the ones I had were part number 2K0 601 149 C - they're the solid disc type with nine small holes around the outer part of the disc and "VOLKSWAGEN" around the perimeter of the inner part of the disc. The T5 centre caps, part number 7H0 601 151, are definitely not a clean fit on the Yeti (though it appears that some people have managed to persuade them to fit) since, as Johann pointed out, they are designed to fit wheels with a larger diameter stud circle.

Grrr... just noticed my reply done from my iPhone did not come through here... though you replied below as having seen it?! Peculiar.

Anyway if I remember correctly the gist was that mine has never fallen off through some very rough roads and indeed I can only prise them off with the help of the hook tool from the boot. I cannot get them off with my bare hands. If you can then there is something wrong still or you have the five cosmetic plastic caps still in place on each of the five bolts...

I didn't have the cosmetic plastic caps on - they're in a ziplock bag in my garage! I couldn't get the caps off without using a tool of some kind. Usually managed it by inserting a thin screwdriver through one of the holes, twisting and pulling.

I suppose it's just possible that someone might have made off with the wheel caps while I was parked up, but it seems unlikely. And why would they only take three?

Frustratingly, I missed out on a set of the smaller Caddy wheel caps on eBay yesterday as well

Never mind, it'll be time to put the summer boots on soon (although it's only 2.5C this morning so still well within winter tyre temperatures at the moment).

Looks as though I'm not the only one having problems with T5 caps on steel wheels. :S

Got 4 shiny new genuine centre caps off eBay, VW Part No 4H0 601 151, fitted them to my nice new genuine VAG steels, and off I went.

6 miles later, I now have 3 centre caps. Damn! :'(

I've fiddled endlessly with them, trying to fit them on top of every combination of plastic bolt covers (1, 2, 3 , with locking bolt cover, without locking bolt cover etc), and nothing seem to work. I've tried them with no plastic bolt covers, and they are definitely not secure enough and can be pulled off without tools.

I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that the wheel bolts fitted to VW T5 vans have longer heads on them than the Skoda bolts, maybe with a slight ridge at the outer end of the bolt, as the wheel centre caps have a ridge in each bolt recess which looks as though it should clip over something on the bolt head. Having put the things on & off several times whilst experimenting, I note that there are slight scratch marks on the bolts that are only just on the ends of the bolt heads. So, I must conclude that bolts with longer heads are required.

Does anyone who has successfully used these T5 centre caps have a solution, short of gluing them on(!) or different bolts?

(The Skoda wheel bolts have flats 11.2mm long

The Skoda wheel bolt covers appear to be able to take a bolt with flats 14mm long

The VW T5 centre caps appear to be able to take a bolt with flats up to 20mm long)

Looks as though I'm not the only one having problems with T5 caps on steel wheels. :S

Speedsport see my reply above. T5 centre caps do not work AT ALL. The T5 has a 5x120 stud arrangement and the Yeti has a 5x112. That means if you draw a circle through the studs the diameter on the T5 is 120mm and only 112mm on the Yeti. The caps appear to fit but they will not fully engage.

You can ONLY safely fit VW Caddy or VW T4 centre caps and I can assure you these will NOT fall off as they really engage very well. See their part number here.

Apologies again for having caused this confusion. Mine was advertised as T5 caps but were in fact from a Caddy - due to the VOLKSWAGEN being written out on them and there being no VW badge.

Hi,

I'm running standard Skoda steel wheels with winter tyres at the moment, fitted with T5 centre caps part no. 7H0 601 151. They're fiddly to fit but will go on without resorting to a hammer!!. After losing 2 in a week I now have a set of 4 fitted with 5 small dabs of clear silicone round the circmference of each unit, no losses in 4 months.

Anyone want 3x good as new T5 centre caps with just 12 miles on them then? Looks as though I bought them in error, having seen various people saying that the T5 caps were the ones to get. Oh well, some you win etc....!

They do fit, just a bit fiddly, and the silicone trick works

Hopefully the final update on my wheel cap tribulations...

I managed to source a brand new set of the 2K0 601 169 centre caps at a very reasonable price off eBay. I saved a bit more by collecting them in person - although the seller lived 350 miles away, that just happened to be in the same town as my Dad who I was visiting this weekend!

A quick check shows that they fit my steel wheels very well. I noticed protrusions on the inner face of the part-circular clips which fit over the wheel bolt heads. These protrusions engage very positively with the wheel bolt heads and there is clearly zero chance of these caps coming adrift in normal driving.

Looking back at my (one remaining :'() 2K0 601 149 wheel cap, I can see that that also has protrusions on the wheel bolt clips (they are a bit worn, presumably because those caps were rather more second-hand). Offering that cap up to a wheel once again it is clear that those protrusions do not engage behind the wheel bolt heads at all. It seems to me that either the 'dish' of the wheel is such that the cap sits too far out to allow the protrusions to engage behind the bolt heads, or the bolt heads are simply too long (which is almost the opposite of what speedsport suspects :|)

I don't think I'm going to bother trying to source another set of the 2K0 601 149 caps as it seems clear that those won't stay on my wheels (at least, not without a bit of faff that I don't think I can be bothered with).

The one thing I would still like to do is to put a Skoda badge over the VW logo on the centre of my chosen wheel caps. I have a set of 60mm self-adhesive Skoda badges. Those seems to be the right diameter, but the wheel cap centre has too much of a dome on it for them to fit. ISTR that someone did trick up there wheel caps this way but I can't find any details of how they did it.

The Yeti said it was 10̊C in sunny Herefordshire over the weekend. The pleasant early spring weather stayed with us all the way up the M6/M74 but sure enough within a few miles of Edinburgh the mist came down and so did the temperature! It was 2̊C here this morning and the forecast is for frosts later in the week. I think the winter tyres will staying on for a while yet...

It was Rockhopper and all he did was use Evo Stik. They will fold bumpy as you glue them and when I touched his caps you could feel the bumps but you could not see them.

Glad to hear these now fit. Amazing that such a tiny difference as 5x112 and 5x120 can mean that those protrusions don't engage.

Thanks, I'll give that a go. Good old Evo Stik, eh? None of yer fancy-pants so-called "super" glue!

Yep. It was me. trick is to use loads on both surfaces and leave for ages before putting the 2 together. I did have to push the edges down a few times, over the space of a few hours, but they eventually stuck down. Lumpy as 900000 states, but you don't see it.
