according to todays daily mail weekend tv section pick of the day on sunday is clarkson giving the skoda yeti a tongue lashing and the ultimate humilation of a road test.

not my favourite programme but looks like I shall have to watch that bunch of overgrown schoolboys talking pish and blowing things up.

its either that or lark rise to candle wood!

Clarkson has driven the Yeti back in 2009 when comparing it to a Mini and said this:-

".. the model I tested - a Cooper S - costs more than £22,000. And that makes it about £3,000 more than the similarly powered Skoda Yeti. Don't be a snob about this, because the Mini isn't a Mini and the Skoda isn't really a Skoda. It's just a Volkswagen. More pointedly, the Mini is terrible and the Yeti is surprisingly good."

...as reported in another thread: http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/185835-clarkson-likes-the-yeti/

I reckon Clarkson of 2011 will still report the Yeti to be a great little car that is that is well priced and will put it on the cool side of the Cool Wall.

If he does not like the Yeti, then he loses his last bit of credibility!

Why do people get upset if someone has a different opinion about there car :dull:

I'm the only guy at work that has 2 Octavia's and often get the pi55 taken out of me. But I don't care I'm happy with the car and if people don't like it then that's up to them. I have noticed they like them when they need a lift

As long as your happy with the car then I wouldn't worry what Clarkson says :)

He will have a point though as it is a carp car :p

This from the TopGear web.

Meanwhile, Jeremy has got a large Czech bee in his bonnet about the Skoda Yeti and elects to conduct one of his famously thorough road tests featuring helicopters, firemen, a celebrity cameo appearance and two rather amusing dogs, in order to show just how good it is.

That's encouraging Mike, there must be an explosion involved somewhers as well or it wouldnt be top gear!!

On the other point by Carl about the Skoda name ,my mate in the sailing club has had 2 octavia scouts. When he got the first one his wife made him keep it in the garage as she didnt want the neighbours to see it on the drive and know they had a Skoda!

Five years later the second one stays on the drive for all to see.

When I got one of the first Octavias about 12 years ago, my wife and I were genned up enough to know exactly what we had bought and were immediately proud to display it. What is more, on it's first and thereafter on many subsequent trips when we parked it for lunch at (say) a busy small town shopping precinct - on our return we always had many people surrounding the car and who had hung back awaiting our return asking sensible questions and requesting information and a having really good look around it. I'm sure i sold many Octavias during those first months of ownership. The only other time that happened to me was many years before when I bought one of the very first Citroen ZX's. Not strictly true - I had a second car once for a few years (overlapping with the Octavia) - an immaculate vintage MGB GT and that also attracted some attention when parked - but away from specialist vintage car events - perhaps not as much attention as the Octavia in it's early days..

That curly haired USELESS & STUPID imbecile doesn't have any credibility.

James May and Richard Hammond, at least they have a sensible motoring column in newspapers......what has that to55er Clarkson got?? emoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif

Hey - easy Mac D - he's only doing his job, and one that has made this program the most watched on the entire planet.

And remember, ANY publicity is good publicity, in marketing terms. To get this level of exposure on prime TV globally would cost billions.

so forgive him his foibles and just appreciate that our vee-hickle is good enuff to warrant this kind of exposure. eh??

You have to remember that TG is selling a product- cocking about for all the family. The original TG- and Wheelbase before it- was dull as ditchwater and JC turned the programme around from the TV equivalent of Which magazine to something the whole family watched. JC is a seriously good journalist and I have read his stuff since Performance Car days. But his USP is being controversial and daft- which suits me fine. He rightly loathed the Vectra and after the shockwaves subsided from the legendary TG featuring that horrid car it became ok to take the pi** in this type of programme. I don't really care whether he likes Yetis or not frankly- just hope it's good telly. But strange how so many people seize on to fact that JC likes their car but so quick to rubbish him if he doesn't . Fact is some folk buy really crap cars- Nissan Bluebird anybody ? 206 ?

Top Gear since around the year 2003, has been wonderful entertainment for us all - certainly.

BUT, the entertainment is completely at the expense of the crucial facts that real potential car buyers are really interested in.

The original Top Gear gave us these facts and their senses of whether it was exciting or boring to drive.

Clarkson does not think the nation can even be patient enough to listen to a few minutes of facts, so he doesn't give them.

The balance is all the wrong way.

I suggest a program that gives all the facts about the car in a few minute summary, then a few minutes of driving review, then a few minutes of ownership expectations - eg, running costs, feel-good factors etc.

Fifth Gear is better in this regard, but they're all rubbish compared to the old Top Gear!

And I'm only 41.... !!!

People need to know:-

1. petrol or diesel with engine weight and position to help us with an idea of handling

2. normally aspirated or forced induction - and what type eg, turbo or super charged or both

3. weight of car with full tank and one person on board as weighed by the reviewer

4. the space in the boot - by using full sized suitcases and smaller ones to give us a clear idea

5. the full features of the seat options eg, if the seats recline, let's know about it, if they come out, let's see!

6. the full options for the car - if the car has the option of a heated screen/seats etc, tell us!

7. the reliability likeliness based on what parts are used eg, Yeti parts from VAG, therefore reliability should be good

8. drive the car off road, on road - but all roads eg, speed humps, park on Wycombe Hill and try reversing/driving up it...

9. brake test in dry and wet with measured distances (with graphics of what is good relative to the hghway code & other cars)

10. acceleration tests with 50-70 MPH included.

11. NVH test on different roads - with measured noise levels at 30, 60, 80 and 100 MPH (for Autobahns)

12. explain the suspension eg, independent all-round suspension rather than a fixed beam is important to know!

13. type of brakes - disc brakes with ABS latest version all round is crucial

14. crash test results

15. how much servicing, renewable items, insurance etc are going to cost and relative to other competitor cars...

16. how interesting was the car - a sense of occasion?

10 minutes would be a minimum, 15 minutes more acceptable, but 20 minutes would be perfect....with lots of good slow camera shots - we don't want to see the reviewer - just hear a nice voice.

Am I right about this?

Nope sorry i have to disagree

That would make one hell of a boring programme to watch :dull: If you want all that stuff thats what the Manufacturers brochure's are for.

Occasionally watch Top Gear if it doesn't clash with a good old fashioned murder mystery who done it type program :giggle: Unfortunately they tend to feature a lot of useless super cars that personally I have no interest in but otherwise fairly entertaining viewing. However as it's a quite night on TV (lots of also rubbish reality TV I believe; another personal opinion) and the Monster is featured I'll be there.

In some respects then yes it would be nice to have a program that gave you the the nitty gritty about a particular car, however I've often found what suits a jurno doesn't suit me. For example in the early 90's they were all raving about the Peugeot 306 TDI and on the face of it appeared a decent car. However after buying one I found it to be much less practical to live with and terribly built compared to my previous Escort V and that's says it all really.

I have always enjoyed the sheer entertainment value of the program, never really took it seriously.

They do state the obvious like the Porsche Panamera is ugly - yes we know! and they test far too many super cars recently which are of no interest to me.

However a quick search on Youtube suggest that the first ever episode of Top Gear in the current format actually did a rather useful consumer review on the Citroen Berlingo.

I have to say my favourite parts of the program is when they have challenges in older cheaper second hand cars which I do want to buy one day. Eg. I would like a Porsche 944 for £1,500, similarly I would like to see whether the MX-5, Z3 or Barchetta is better and In this respect, although they still muck around a lot, it is actually quite a useful part of the program.

Whilst I like fuel efficient cars, I do share their view on the hybrids.

That would make for catatonia- I doubt if 1% of the viewing public would care a hoot about the type of suspension or the list of options- just google it and you will get all the important but essentially dull facts you need. And the comment above re Escorts and 306s- just shows how diverse we are. The last iterations of the Escort were almost beyond bad- the 306 was a revelation- and I did a lot of miles in both but only spent my money on one. And of course we should have supercars being thrashed- I would not be paid to watch a Micra or a 307 being driven - unless it was off a cliff...

Well, yes and no - in an ideal world, we would get all this from a manufacturer's brochure but as we Yeti purchasers know, it's pretty hard to work out exactly what you're getting even from a combination of brochure, dealer and customer services!

No point me watching a 100k Gumpert or Koenigsegg going around the track...I'll never own one, want one or afford one. But a test of say an Octy vRS and a Evo 10, that I'd find interesting and watch.

Ultimately, what does it matter that journalists don't like the car you all prize so much. I personally wouldnt want one but at the same time I know a few people who wouldn't want my vRS.

Its no different to the number of forum members who detest BMW's for no apparent reason. I've been lucky enough to own two and loved them to bits. I've settled for a skoda as I couldn't afford another BMW 330d but it was a good compromise. As long as you are happy with the car you drive. Quite frankly, who cares!

Top Gear is all about family entertainment. It is about boys being boys with their toys, which when you are an adult and can possibly afford them, is much more interesting than pushing around my old dinky toys. We all dream to some extent. That it features cars is almost incidental to the programme. I know it's all about cars, but it isn't, it's about fun. it's a paradox.
