Rear brakes binding

Featured Replies

I've recently noticed a slight scraping noise from the rear brakes, some sharp higher speed braking tonight and the sound was extremely pronounced like the a pad rubbing on a buckled disc, scuffing intermittent noise ith some brake smell too. Some sub 20mph handbrake test and the n/s locked up way before the o/s. Did a few emergency stops to maybe free up the calipers but not sure if any effect. Checking the discs once parked up the n/s was stone cold after a 60 mile spirited drive, while the o/s was very hot.

So I have a binding disc - anything I can do myself before calling the garage? Is this spring mod in the stickies for my situation? Car is an 06 VRS with standard rear (rusty and grooved looking) discs.

Check the handbrake lever mounted at the top of the rear side of the caliper is moving freely. Disconnect the cable first and spray the pivot bolt then work the lever back and forth. Might as well do both sides. Check the pads inner and outer to see if they are worn down too much. File off the rust on the outer edge of the discs where the pads don't touch the disc. The answer to your problem is in the Sticky http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/137832-handbrake-cable-issue-on-my-vrs/ Finally fit the springs as described in the Sticky and re-adjust the handbrake cable by the 10mm. nut under the the rear of the centre console.

I noticed my driverside caliper destroyed the inside pad (Literally nothing left).

It wasn't the sticky handbrake, but the piston had siezed, along with the guide pin.

Removed guide pin, quick sand down, coat of grease, back in.

With the piston, I just freed it with a ghetto pair of pliers. Put it all back together with new pads, and no problems now.

Glad thats sorted now. Did you fit springs as well?

I did, however I couldn't fit them correctly.

It seems that everyone else's pics of there handbrake caliper had an extra hole to pop the spring end in.

Mine didn't. Also, mine had an extra rubber hanging off it! Dunno why?

Not sure what age your car is but later vRSs have different rear brakes - as confirmed by the options code decoder.

Deffo not newer, only a 54 plate. As far as I know the calipers haven't been changed. I'll get a picture up in a bit, on mobile at moment.

Do the newer fabia rear brakes have extra rubbers hanging off the handbrake lever of the caliper?
