I got my bigger winter tyres this weekend!

I drove to Coventry this weekend to meet fellow member Bohmer (now an ex Yeti owner) to buy his 215/60 set of winter tyres (Michelin made Kleber Krisalp HP2 215/60 R16 99H XL). Wow. They are a proper size for sure! On 7J rims too vs my 6J so they look WAY better and that is before I've even put them on! I never liked the look of the puny 205s on my car. Now I know it is going to be 32 degress today but roll on winter!!! (Or perhaps I will just put them on for the Kirton off road day as they are fine for mud too and gives me MORE ground clearance?! IF that is happening since everyone has gone quiet on that front!)

And here on the left the 205/55s and on the right the 215/60s:

And I now have a studio FULL of tyres! Even a baby 8" spare from the trailer (and an old church door. Anyone wants to buy an old church door?!!) LOL

And many thanks again to Tony (Bohmer) for meeting me half way in Coventry from Wales. Hope the Roomster enjoyed having its legs streched!

32 degs? More like 16 down here in Newquay......Fog rolling in over the cliffs off Fistral Beach.

215/55 R16's or was that a typo like I did recently-205/55 R16.......???

Those photos of the comparison are like the ones I posted back in December when I picked up Elsie the Helipad....

Oops. Fixed. That should have read 205/55 as per the other mentions in the post! Awh 16 degrees! Come back to London then!

No! Not yet :-)

I love the sea air. When it is not foggy we can see the sea, surfers and the beach from our ground floor flat. About 8 car lengths from the edge of the cliff overlooking Fistral Beach. A fabulous spot. Might go surfing or body boarding later in the fog!

What trims are you going to use on those steel wheels ?

I will be using my old central trims from a VW Caddy van that I used last winter. See these threads:

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/184839-theyre-here/page__view__findpost__p__2215225

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/180539-winters-on-steelies-to-trim-or-not-to-trim/

As stated before you can only use Caddy van centre caps as they have a 5x112 stud pattern and not the 5x120 pattern a VW T5 has.

No problem Johann, enjoyed the run(once I'd cleared M6 around Birmingham). Glad you like the tyres, I'm sure you know already, but just a reminder when you put them on that they are directional, so look for the arrows!

Thanks Tony. When I got home I saw the arrows. My mountain bike's city and mud tyres have the same arrows when I swap them around so I knew what they meant!

Johann - just to check - are the 215/60-16s a recommended replacement fit for the 225/50-17s on the Elegance (i.e. from insurance pt of view) ? How much do they change the speedo ?

MyTyres deal on 215s is pretty good now - just about to press the button !

p.s. your new rims/tyres look mighty

Thank you. It is an allowed size and on TP's Tyre and rim guide. Rockhopper to name but one person also uses this size for winters.

Use this to calculate difference in size:

This one also tells you the % difference!

http://www.alloywheels.com/tyrecalc.asp

So my speedo will read 1,2% too slow. So when my speedo shows 60mph I'm actually doing 60,7mph. My old baby wheels were 3,8% fast.

"to name but one person also uses this size for winters. "........ Oi!, what about me! :D

(Admittedly I haven't used them, but they are there, tucked up waiting for winter)..

The size difference is a bonus, as you say. (And they do look a bit beefier don't they)

Oops sorry. Yes they look very much more BF Goodrich like and proper.

Remember your speedo is about 5% optimistic.

An indicated 60 is in fact a genuine 57mph.

Your new 215/60/16 wheels have a slightly larger rolling circumference(1.16%),so your speedo will be more accurate.

An indicated 60 will be a true 57.8Mph

WHAT??Do I read this correctly??

We are getting around to the opinion that the standard 16" 215/60's are the best looking whell/tyre combination for the Yeti?

Told you so B)

Yes....

Better than my summer 17" spitzbergs. If I could afford it I would change to 16". Even considered another set of steelies for summer as they are very similar in weight.....
