On Friday 19 August at 07:45am, a ŠKODA Octavia vRS officially became the world's fastest 2.0-litre supercharged production car in the world when the 600 bhp ‘salt spec’ racer – built to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the iconic vRS performance flagship badge – registered a Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) sanctioned speed of 227.070 mph on Utah’s legendary Bonneville Salt Flat.

The modified production Octavia vRS hatch, prepared by ŠKODA UK, smashed the previous record for a 2.0-litre forced induction production car at this year's Bonneville Speed Week (13-19 August), registering an impressive official record speed of 227.080 mph.

The previous record for what is known as the G/PS category was 216 mph, set in August 1998.

Driven by journalist Richard Meaden, the Octavia had set impressive speeds throughout the week breaking the 200 mph barrier on six previous runs.

The Octavia’s record breaking runs consisted of two official runs of Bonneville's famous five-mile course at 225.513 mph on Thursday 18 August, and a return run at 228.647 mph on Friday 19 August.

Robert Hazelwood, Director for ŠKODA UK, said: “This is a truly stunning achievement. Our goal was to break 200 mph as a celebration of 10 years of vRS, and we have achieved that, and significantly more. The success is a tribute to everyone who has worked so tirelessly and with such passion to make ŠKODA a world beater.”

The Milton Keynes based ŠKODA UK team behind the racer had spent the week leading up to Speed Week putting the car through a rigorous dyno programme with the assistance of performance software and tuning outfit specialist REVO Technik.

Daytime temperatures on the Bonneville Salt Flats typically exceed 40C (104F).

Since its launch in 2001, vRS has captured the hearts of UK motorists who enjoy the thrill of sports car driving. Since then, the UK has become ŠKODA’s largest market for the Octavia and Fabia vRS with more than 12,000 cars sold since launch.

'Well done' to the nutters at Skoda UK :)

In the face of all the muppets who still tell Skoda jokes!

That's proper fast!!!

That'll give bugatti something to think about

Don't think there's 10 radiators on an Octy

Well, I like Skoda can do this record. But you don't want to compare it with a Bugatti Veyron ;-) there is still a looooong way to go, impossible I would say to reach 267.85 mph...

Pfft.

I know a guy with a Fabia 2.0MPi who did 235mph....

Congrats to Skoda though, very impressive!

More "told you so" nods from the "in the know" Skoda drivers!:thumbup::thumbup:

Was it petrol or diesel? :p :p :p

It was a 2.0TSi engine. Turbocharged petrol engine.

I bet that was going up a very steep hill into a ferocious headwind and towing a caravan too.

Not bad for a Czech rubbish skip

Will my 210k miles 2003 Ambiente 90BHP Estate TDi do it while running on old chip fat and a dodgy MAF sensor?

Sorry Colin, but I think you'll find it was TURBOCHARGED?

Great stuff. Superb team effort and fab celebration of 10th Anniversary of vRS badge!

I'm also thinking Skoda UK should be buying my registration plate :giggle:

Evo Magazine have produced a great series of video blogs, for the final record breaking run - click here

I love the fact he was driving one handed just before deploying the parachute!

I hope they make a film/programme on this.

As they like to say in America AWESOME.

Yes it was, this is the release as Skoda put it out. I thought it was turbo, but they said super..., it's forced induction class supercharger or turbo.

Evo 'might' release a special edition mag with the footage as a Doovde. You never know. It would probably end up being played on a loop in Skoda dealers if they did. There is now nothing more certain than a limited run of vRS Octys to celebrate this.

well done skoda :)

To break 200 was good going, but 227...... :)

I guessed it was a Skoda error as most web sites are directly quoting the Skoda press release. Or do they think its a TSi in the press office? :wonder:

it ran in the production-supercharged category, a turbo is technically a type of supercharger
