Dsg Clutch Failure

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone has had their clutch fail on there vrs dsg and if so, what was your cost to get it replaced? Local garage are wanting over £2k which seems rather excessive! Really disappointed as car isn't even on 40k miles yet but juddering in gears and been diagnosed at garage with clutch out of tolerance, so needs replaced

Sorry can't see car details. So has your car had the DSG service campaign work done, then contact skoda UK, they need work Guaranteed if not done contact skoda UK, why not done

£2.000 a joke, so contact skoda UK if your car has service history because skoda had clutch pack and mcu failures and faulty parts and a poor service campaign

Hey Offski, not as far as I'm aware, there's no sticker in boot to say it was done. Was all mk2 fabia vrs's affected or just certain models? Mine a 61 plate.

Have already sent skoda a message, all I could find was an online enquiry form though, couldn't find an email adress

Mike, replacing the clutches on one of these is not hard. £2k is a bit of a joke I think. I've had one apart but not actually had to put it together again but it was a very conventional dual clutch box setup. I have no idea what dealers normally charge but I doubt at most, that it's more than half what you have been quoted. Good luck mate.

Sorry, i was on the phone and not able to see the 'Inverness;.

So you are talking Arnold Clark, or are you getting prices from 'Parks'.

So if you take the car to Aberdeen, Perth or Dundee it is John Clark / Skoda Spacialist cars that will be doing it.

You want the car to Maud. 'Victoria Garage'.

But then you need to know it is Clutch Packs, & not Mechatronic Control Unit & Clutch Packs needed.  That could be £2,000.

So tell us who you have dealt with.

Yeah, it was arnold clark skoda I went to, got diagnosed by an independent garage first with clutch failure, then arnold clark confirmed it was clutch. will fire a few emails to garages in aberdeen and see what sort of quotes they can give

Tell us the story then.

When you got the car, how many miles you have done.

Arnold Clark have techs, and so do the rest including VW or Seat or Audi Dealerships they can all do the work,

but first you need a correct diagnosis.

Arnold Clark are not going to get that right very often, what about the Independent, what do they know about DSG's or have experience of them?

I've only had the car for 5 months/ 6k miles so currently going down the Consumer Rights path with arnold clark to try get a repair as it's before 6 months, but of course they've never heard of it etc, so I'm not holding out much hope. Likewise, had a warrenty with warrenty direct, and even though they state they cover automatic clutches, they don't with the dry clutch dsg, just bit of warning for all!

Independent garage has done a bit of work on 1.4tsi's, but mainly engine and admittedly not much with gearbox, but he found a fault code and reckons all symptoms are consistent with the clutch pack and not the mech unit.

See post #33

The Arnold Clark Group know plenty about the Mk2 vRS, they have sold enough of them both with Engine & DSG Issues.

As to the DQ200 DSG, it is in enough, Skoda, Seat, Audi & Seat Models that the Arnold Clark Workshops have done Service Campaign Work on

that is 1.2, 1.4 TSI's and even the TDI's that have a 7 Speed Twin Dry Clutch DSG, so the Inverness Techs need to talk within their network,

and Service Managers have a phone and computer and a tongue in their mouth.

Best stick in the network and use consumer rights.

On the face of it with the symptoms you describe, it does sound like the clutch pack itself that is faulty and not the mechatronics. But a drive to diagnose the problem is worth a thousand words. Good luck with that and post back if you can on how you get on.

Thanks for you input guys, another question tho, does the flywheel generally need changed as well or is that something that can be got away with? Had a quote for around £400 all in, which I thought was too good to be true but it turns out LUK have 60% off the clutch pack that's needed so might just bite the bullet and get it sorted.

The quote sheet is at home, and I'm away until the end of the week, but from the top of my head, parts were £1200 for clutch, flywheel and certain other little bits that come in the clutch kit, labour was over 800 at £130 an hour. Currently talking to garage about experience with dsg but sounds promising so far, just means a trip down to edinburgh for me!

If you are going to Edinburgh then i hope it is to

http://autohausedinburgh.co.uk

They have all the gear, all the skills, all the abilities.

& In Forfar is probably the Best Autobox Mechanic in Scotland.

Many Main Dealerships put cars here.

PS

Skoda Specialist Cars (John Clark Group) Aberdeen, Perth or Dundee take around £85 an Hour including VAT and have all the Gear,

a Master Technician and the Diagnostic Equipment.

(A very good Master Tech in Dundee.)

Not normally unless the flywheel has suffered damage from the clutch, or the car has covered extremely high miles and the flywheel clearly shows significant signs of wear. If the flywheel is worn then generally, the clutch will not be able to fully use all the friction material available and you may again need to replace the clutch early and then the flywheel too.

Warranty Direct don't cover dry clutch DSGs !!!   How many get out clauses do these sharks have?  I've just traded in my vRS after over 5 years of ownership (backed up with a Skoda extended warranty). It was a tough decision. I was going to keep the car and get cover through Warranty Direct or Warranty Wise because of concerns over engine/DSG long term reliability. I'm now glad I let the car go even though my wallet is hurting.

Yes, no warranty company covers 'dry' clutches. These are consumables and simply eventually wear out. How long that takes is largely up to the driver and his or her driving technique.

But the Skoda Approved Used Warranty (Car Care ltd) & the latest have had to cover 'Failure' not Wear & Tear Failure,

The kind that some Warranty Providers say was a 'Known Issue',  & Skoda / VW know is known because it was there Fundamental Design / Manufacturing / Materials / Sourcing

Fluids used and Quality Control that caused failure or premature wear.

Less messing about with dismantling and diagnostics costs with a Skoda (VW) extended warranty because most Technicians will know exactly what and why the failure is,

and Skoda (The Warranty Underwriters VW) know an Independent Experts Report will show the issue clearly, ie Not normal wear and tear.

Some still get knocked back obviously on claims even with a Skoda Used car Warranty, Warranty Extension.

Offski yes, but I was replying to a straight forward statement about Warranty Direct not covering dry DSG box clutch packs. They don't cover those and neither do other after market companies unless it's a failure due to some other problem. Skoda, or it's agent, has an obligation to undertake work in some instances that may relate to "problem" boxes and clutches, as you rightly say.

Some have been fortunate with Warranty Companies when it comes to Twinchargers & DSG's,  Due to selling the Warranty and later saying 'Known Issues;,

because they are a Warranty Provider and they should be well aware of Known Issues,  they can be pushed to 'talk with Skoda / VW', and then they Contribute,

or is that Pay Up.

Sadly wear and tear maybe not covered but then these failures are often not even long enough to be considered really as Wear & Tear,

some are just in the first year out of Manufacturers Warranty.

Estate Man, maybe your not getting my concern. I've never before considered using an after market warranty company prior to owning the vRS. The 'complex' technology on this car was a selling point and the 'VAT free' deal made it something of a bargain. However, after 5 years of ownership I had concerns with the long term reliability of the twin charger engine and the DSG gearbox. Problems with the 7 speed dry clutch DSG are well documented. What is the point of buying a warranty from Warranty Direct when they can refuse a claim on wear or tear whether or not wear and tear can actually be proven to have been the root cause?

Could they also refuse a claim if the car had a pre-existing condition such as high oil consumption? The more you drill down into the small print from these companies the less attractive they are.
