Sticky handbrake in the morning

Featured Replies

I tend to drive the car 90miles to Heathrow and then it sits there for a few days, then back home and it sits there a few days.  I’ve noticed recently that when I release the handbrake that the right rear drum is binding and the car initially doesn’t want to move.  I’ve never had a car with drums before, car is under skoda warranty.  It’s a Monte Carlo estate.

i know the easy answer is to take it in, but wasn’t sure if I could sort something myself like I did with the silicon spray on the rear squeaky seat hinge.  It’s service isn’t due until April.

Very common problem. Unfortunately it requires the drum to be removed and properly cleaned out.

Bad design.

Characteristic of the model.

'They all do that sir',  or the ones that do do it.  Read the many threads in this section including one this week.

Take a few bricks with you, chock the wheels and leave the hand brake off.

Ah cheers, I will do a more comprehensive search!

I've always left any vehicle in gear and not  used handbrake fully... Stops them sticking when left

Try not pulling too hard, just enough to operate properly
