it has literally been years since my last post/visit (2015 apparently - yikes), and now having recently swapped my 3rd Fabia for a Karoq (comparatively feels like a tank to drive, but getting used to it). (1.5 TSI DSG) 

 

I was checking the oil the other day and looked in the manual (pg 262-263) and it doesnt actually seem to tell you what is the correct oil to top up with if needed. All it says is to contact ‘a specialist company’ (so, not Skoda? ;-)) but that in a pinch, you can avoid engine damage by using up to 500ml of oil to vw 502/504/508 spec.

 

ive got plenty of Castrol edge bottles that are 504/507 compliant but can’t find any oil that is easily obtainable that is vw 508 spec - when I do it’s 0w-20 rather than the more usual 0w-30, so don’t want to take a punt and assume that’s the one to use. Is vw 508 the new spec that is the OEM fill? 

 

I dont want to be using non optimal oil and filling this thing with oil that ‘probably’ won’t damage it, I want to be filling up using the same stuff that the factory uses - how difficult should this be?!?

Looks great.

Ask the Master Tech @ the Dealership then we will find out what they know, or do not,

not the Service Desk employee or Workshop manager, they only ask someone else.

Or ask these people @ Skoda UK CS who can ask someone else like the technical department and then answer in writing, and then we will all know for sure.

504 5W30 and 508 0W20 specs are listed for the VAG 1.5TSI 110KW engine. As Skoda recommends use of Castrol Edge Professional, 504 5W30 will be the best choice for price and availability.

Just spent a long time this morning 'chatting' to Skoda customer services as I'm waiting on delivery of a Karoq and have some oil in the garage I use in my Yeti (Castrol Edge and Quantum). They messed around checking with technical and ten came back with the same rubbish as the handbook. Really BAD that they can't say the recommended oil spec. I still don't know but will ask in dealers when collecting new car.

So, according to Gemma from Skoda UK on Skoda's chat service this morning (after checking with technical department), Karoq 1.5 TSI's OEM oil spec is VW 508 00, 0W-20. Why the manual suggests going to a 'specialist company' I'll never know.

 

So, both Castrol and Mobil do a compliant oil (Castrol's is the 'Edge long life IV' and Mobil's is the 'X2 something I think), but both more expensive than VW 507 00 spec. Ah, the price of early adoption. Obviously however 507 spec oil is better than olive oil if you're really desperate... ;-)

This morning had a call from Skoda customer support to answer my query on oil types. The 'official' position is that the dealer has to recommend the oil type depending on the service schedule selected. I argued that this does not excuse publishing the specs in the manual - they manage to do it in the Yeti and other manuals listing under fixed or variable services - not rocket science but they insist that it is the dealers call. Pleased they followed up but really depressed that they can't just put the info in the handbook. Apparently my existing 'stock' of Castrol edge is ok.

Will UK Skoda Main Dealership workshops be using that at the Fixed or Flexible servicing,

 or just 5w 30 FS LL to VW504 /507 00 ?

I can't believe that my 1 year old Karoq 1.5 SE DSG with 4,200 miles on the clock needs it's oil changed every 12 months.  I thought that the whole point of synthetic oil was to extend the service period of a vehicle.  My dealer insists that the oil will deteriorate over 12 months and, apparently, as it's got '2 cylinder mode' it has to have VW 508 0/20 OEM spec. This does not seem very 'GREEN' to me.  Now, I'm sure that all the old oil gets recycled and resold at £60 - £70 a pop.  Too much 'tail wagging the dog', but I guess they have to recoup the cost of their emissions **** up. 

I'm pretty sure that if you're on the extended service scheme, the oil will last for a year and a half or so, depending on the type of driving you do and the length of your journeys. Unfortunately though the trips I've been making during lockdown - 16 miles a week to go shopping - are bad news for car engines and their oil! 

 

The new VW 508 oil with its reduced viscosity are all down to reducing fuel consumption and emissions of course, and we can only hope that there isn't any increased wear in the engine. But others have reported that dealers are still using the old spec VW 507 oils when they replace it. So who will get the blame if engines are damaged by using the wrong oil??

Of course it doesn't need changing however.....

 

Your car was delivered to a UK dealer with the onboard computer set to variable servicing (QI6 on the PR build codes for your car) which is  "up to 18,600 miles/2years"

 

Your dealer changed it to fixed interval "9300 miles/1 year" (QI1) at the PDI before handover.

 

They did this because....

 

You agreed or instructed them to do this

 

or....

 

You have a service plan, e.g. free two services with skoda finance or a prepaid plan that stipulates the car service regime must be set to annual fixed interval, buried in the small print, on a web page somewhere

 

or....

 

The dealer did it hoping you won't notice and try to convince its necessary or obligatory. The truth being its their dealer policy to promote more frequent servicing.

 

Once your onboard computer starts telling you a service is due, a dealer will say it needs to be done to maintain any Skoda warranty. Leeway of 500 miles IIRC.

 

The "2 cylinder mode needs 508 oil" statement is not true at all but thats a different subject, too tiresome for me to get into.

CJJE, we pay a heavy price for so called fuel economy. The Auto Stop/Start requires a super duper battery which my mate had to replace twice due to an unknown fault. Needless to say, he chopped the car in and let the car dealer carry the can when he sold it.

 

xman, I bet my local Skoda dealer (not the one I got it from) would balk at resetting to Q16 and charge me well for the privilege if he did it.  I will call some local VW specialists tho'.
