Hi, I dropped my 2016 Superb in for repair in a main dealer. On collecting it their agent pointed out some paint peeling on the driver door.

Now i can put my hand on my heart and say I never saw it before and due to the size of same and it being on the drivers door there would be no way i could have missed it.

Anyway the rep said he would look into it.

Today I arranged to go with them to their body repair shop. The chap from there comes out and looks at the car, instantly saying to the Skoda dealer that he is not going to likes this.

It turns out that the front, rear doors and wing on the drivers side have all been resprayed, and to his expert eye the work was "not great".

I bought this car direct from the dealer as a ex-demo confirmed at the time the car had never been damaged and was always in their stock.

The rep i was dealing with today states that they have no record of any work been carried out on the car other than service whilst they had it.

I have no great experience here so any advise would be appreciated.

What should I expect from the dealer.

How do I ascertain any devaluation on resale value the car. If a spray guy could see the work straight away.

So has the bloke from the bodyshop written a report after measuring the paint? 

Have the photos been taken by the Rep or the Paintshop employee?

Was he the Painter, Estimator or what was he?

 

Here is a case of a new supposedly undamaged one with the keeper panned off, be sure to get everything in writing and get repaired to Factory Standard or actually better as factory standard can be crap.

I had this happen 30 years ago when my new Austin Maestro (stop laughing at the back!)  got damaged in transport and was sprayed before it got to the Dealer.  The only clue was after the front nearside wing lower bolt sheered off in the Winter of 1985, and when the car went in to be fixed it was found that the entire front end was out of alignment and the nearside doors had been repaired, filled and re-sprayed.  The supplying Dealer knew nothing about it.

 

I don’t know how Škoda deal with this today, but BMW have a special repair centre at Thorne in Yorkshire that repairs any shipping damage before that car goes to a Dealer.  No record of the damage is passed to the Dealer.  My X6 was damaged and repaired and the fix is only visible under infra red light from CCTV because the metal flake is laying slightly differently.  In daylight you cannot see anything.  Having spotted the change I asked BMW GB to tell the truth about it, and was told it was an ‘incontinent seagull’ on new paint.

 

It sounds a little like your car got damaged in transport and was repaired by Škoda before the Dealer got it?

Skoda actually respray's cars that get damaged on assembly line or on transportation or on their parking lot and so on. It is done manually and not by robots so for trained eye (etc painter), it is visible on close examination. 

But such paint should not peel off in any ways as such repairs are done to factory standards.

 

If the work is done in such un-professional manner, then maybe transportation company damaged the car, didn't want to tell dealer and got it fixed at "I Fix Lawn Mover's and Car's" garage owned by Bob?

Very difficult situation. Is the dealer unwilling to talk? In the end its either the dealer or Skoda UK's responsibility, depending on when it was done. Proving it wasn't done while under your ownership is the difficult bit.

Skoda Ireland, so nothing to do with Skoda UK.

Why i linked the thread with the other members trials and tribulations with Skoda Ireland and a Dealership.

I'm gonna call it as a SMART repair in the dealers carpark, at port or sales persons driveway (they are unlikely going to 'fess up to smashing the demo) and the repairer used those absolutely pointless and not fit for purpose heat lamps to dry the paint.   

 

Get a formal inspection from the body shop and present it to the dealer principal stating you expect actions and outcome that you find nothing less than 100% to your satisfaction.   The problem now is, I dare say, you are thinking 'what else is wrong with this car?' :sadsmile:

Thanks everyone, This has gone a long way.

The car sold to me as a demo turns out to have been leased for a 2 month period. In this time frame the car was damaged and repaired. The dealer claims they were unaware of it.

The damage in fairness (I have received photographic evidence) was minor, couple of scrapes down the two doors. 

They offered to replace the two doors (before the photos) and to respray the whole side.

We are currently negotiating at the moment I have the following

- Total respray

- Replace two doors

- Extra year warranty

- 5 free services

- Monetary compensation

- payment for a full third party independent report.

I am not sure I will get much more from them.

 

Tbh, I agree you’re unlikely to get much further without spending a lot of cash.

Not a bad propoasal. Unlike a dealer to admit fault and offer anything at all. 

 

Can you ensure the warranty and services are transferable to a new owner?

 Did you get this resolution from Skoda Ireland or did you have to do battle in the UK.  I am very interested as we too have a Superb (in Dublin) from a UK dealer that had bodywork unknown to the dealer who sold it to us. So must have been done before Skoda UK passed the car onto the dealership.

Hi Stevie,

I got this resolution from the dealer direct. My car was Irish and not a UK import. I am not sure what the law is in the UK, here they are obliged to inform you of damage and the excuse they didn't know, I have been told by a barrister wont wash as they are deemed the experts and should be aware. Skoda Ireland didn't want to know as the damage did not occur on their watch.
