DSG failure?

Featured Replies

Hi.

I have a 2011 Skoda Octavia 1.6 TDI DSG ( 6 speed ).

The car has around 50.000 miles on the clock.

Today, it suddenly stopped shifting into the first, third and fifth gear. Check engine light appeared on the dashboard. Also, the gear symbols on the dashboard ( D2, D4 ) are flashing during drive.

When I stay with the engine on I can hear a metalic noise coming from under the hood.

I managed to take it home using the second and fourth.

Any idea what should I expect on monday when the dealer opens?

Any input appreciated.

Paul

Welcome.

I had no idea you got a 1.6TDI with a 6 speed DSG.  i thought they all had a DQ200 7 Speed Twin Dry Clutch DSG.

They can have Mechatronic Control Unit failures, or clutch pack failures, and that is well covered on this forum in many sections.

?

If you have a 6 speed is that a Wet Clutch DSG and has it ever had any servicing / Oil changes.

Those DQ200 7 speed Dry Clutch DSG's were part of a World Wide Recall and a European Service Campaign which Skoda started in the UK in 2014.

Synthetic oil changed to mineral oil and a software update.

I'm not sure, it has reverse and another 6 gears, does this make it a 7 speed gearbox? As far as I know it has a dry clutch and it doesn't need servicing..

If a Twin Dry Clutch then it is a 7 speed.  7 forward and 1 reverse.

They do not need Oil changes.

Is there a sticker in the spare tyre well with '34F7' on showing the Service Campaign as having been done.

See 'other recall actions'.   just to see if anything is outstanding.

(& OT, but was your car ever in for the 'Emissions fix', not that that affects your current DSG issue / failure. )

Yes mine has Reverse and 7 forward... Bought the car 1 year ago so I don't know, I'll have a look in a minute and post.

Thank you...

LE: no sticker

In the worst case, which sadly is only too common, the replacing of a MCU (mechatronic control unit) by a Main Dealer can be £1,700.

Clutch Packs £1,100.

You need the diagnosis done and by a Main Dealer or a very good Independent or Automatic Specialist.

Best check on service campaign '34F7' and see if done or not.  Skoda UK will not care less though. It is a fight with them now other DQ200 DSG issues

on cars out of Warranty, but some do win with them.  Difficult though if no Full Main Dealer Service History.

Fingers crossed that a MCU or Clutch Packs are not what you need. Likely it is though.  Good luck.

If you do a search on Briskoda & even in this section you will see others that have had the same fault.

Brilliant, I'll be phoning him monday morning. It's 10 minutes drive away from me ( or 20 in second gear.

Cheers.

I would like to think it was just a problem with the gear linkage/cable.. I don't want to get your hopes up but that will be a much less costly job than the actual gear box.

Good luck, keep us informed.

Short update on my car situation. I started the car in the morning to go to a transmission specialist in Cannock ( Penn Cars doesn't do DSG's ) but the car doesn't seem to have a problem anymore, all gears are working, no dangling sound...

I still went to the specialist who unfortunately didn't have time for a computer diagnosis, but he took it for a 5 minutes drive test.

He told me it drives perfectly.

His explanation was that probably the clutch that controls the odd gears is a bit tired and at one point the mechatronic felt it and restricted the access to those. After 2 days of not using the car, something has reseted and the problem disappeared.

He suggested I continue to drive it and come back if (when) it happens again.

Since I'm a bit short on the money for a new clutch kit, I'm happy to follow his advice for now.

?

Was it on the ramp to check if there is any fluid loss from the MCU?   That can be an issue.

All of 5 minutes to check,

check for the Employee / technicians safety before doing a road test obviously....

?

Has you car had Service Campaign '34F7' carried out or did it not require that?

Good luck with it but beware and take care because loss of drive can be dangerous, especially in an outside lane.

Somehow VW managed to get the DVSA to believe that you can roll safely to a halt.

In other world regions Authorities were not so stupid to believe that.

I have to have the car serviced in 2 days so I'll ask them to have a look for fluid loss, thank you.

I had a similar issue with my Octavia 1800 tsi auto DSG. Turned out to be the Mechatronic unit that cracked which means that there wasnt enough pressure to change the gears.  The gear box gear indicator was flashing and then eventually it got to the stage where I was having to knock into neutral before going back into Drive for it to find a gear.  Apparently its a common issue with VAG DSG boxes and got mine fixed with a company called MILTA just outside Bristol who were quite honestly superb and had it fixed in less than 2 days.  They did warn me that it can wear the clutch badly too in some cases. I was one of the lucky ones who didnt need a new clutch

Out of curiosity,  how much did it cost you?

PS: no problem with mine after 1 week

I think it was about £800 all in if I remember correctly..

  • 3 months later...

I had the same problem....

https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/452114-gear-selector-indicator-flashing2010-skoda-octavia/

Took the car to a Skoda Dealership explained the problem to the mechanic, he must have been good, without even looking under the bonnet, starting the engine or plugging in the diagnostic machine, his synopsis "the gearbox has gone", I thought this guys good, I wonder if he can predict this weeks lottery numbers, no he couldn't, he did predict it would cost over £3,000 plus for a new gearbox.....

He did offer to take it in as a part exchange on a new car......

Took the car to my local garage "where they've MOT'd the car for the last 5 years, they recommended an automatic gearbox specialist in Marple, he diagnosed "with a diagnostic plug in computer" the problem was the Mecatronic Unit was on it's way out, he could fit a new one but he was fully booked, he recommended "C.A.L. in Denton" who specialise in Mecatronics, phoned them Saturday afternoon, they told me to bring the car in 09:00am the following Monday morning and they could fit a unit straight away while I waited....11:00am Monday drove away job done.......£900+vat.....12 months guarantee..

Only gripe, I had to pay £2:50 for a coffee at a local Costa Coffee while I waited......

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

update 30/04/19.......went on a touring holiday to Spain for three weeks, no problems with the gearbox, as at April 2019 still no problems...........don't believe everything the Dealership tells you........
