Longlife service or Fixed Interval

Jase_31

Recommended Posts

Fixed is 10,000 miles or 12 months. Variable is 9000 miles/12 months to 20000miles/2 years depending on use.

The argument against running variable seems to be that it requires "special" oil which costs more - and so there is a point where Fixed may be cheaper.

Outside the dealer network there is probably little difference in oil cost. Looks like best option is to run longlife on variable, and complete early if you want to.

Resetting the indicator without VCDS will put it back into fixed mode.

How many of you use fixed / variable mode?

Useful info I have found about Longlife servicing / logic

I honestly would always do fixed servicing.

It's just better for the engine.

In my opinion variable servicing was only brought about to save the dealers money when a car has a fixed service plan.

@Jase_31  What engine do you have?

?

What annual mileage will you do, and will you be checking service items yourself, pre and post winter and MOT?

http://volkswagen.co.uk/owners-and-drivers/servicing/service-plans/service-schedules

There is no Special Oil that costs more involved with  VW group engines.

The VW508 00 / 509 00 can be pretty expensive if you are going to buy / use that.  It is not 'Special'.

With a TSI you could use VW 502 00 for fixed servicing which is not Long Life oil.  *** Do not use VW502 00 in a TDI even for fixed servicing.***

Maybe available at less cost if you wanted to use that.  You can pay more for some VW502 00 if you so want.

The Long Life OIl that Dealers use for fixed or variable servicing will be VW504 00 / 507 00, 5w 30 FS II

or

VW 508 00 / 509 00 0w 20 FS IV as TSI & TDI's have had from the factory since 2018 , pre WLTP.

A TDI needs Long Life oil used even for Fixed Service intervals.

So that is to VW 507 00  or VW509 00

@Jase_31

If using an independent best find a good one you can trust locally.

Fixed or Variable servicing you need to use the same oil.   5 litres for under £30 is available commonly.

Your annual miles should be the deciding factor on the oil changes, and servicing is also about having stuff checked on the car more than just oil.

Yes, I usually perform by own servicing on my other cars so able to check items myself on a regular basis as required.

Engine is 2.0TDI - Engine Code DFGA

I got the info about oil from VW direct.

Is the LongLife regime more expensive than the more traditional Time and Distance regime? No, the basic service cost hasn’t changed, but because you need fewer services, you will save money. However, LongLife oil is more expensive than conventional oil. So, if you choose the LongLife regime, there will be a corresponding increase in the cost of the oil replaced during a service. Importantly this increased cost must be seen in context. Over a period, the reduced number of services means that the cost of ownership nearly always comes down. Your Retailer has a calculation that can illustrate the likely savings you will make on both the maintenance of your vehicle and the fuel bill

Although it seems that all oil is  "507 00" for Diesels (not 509), so the oil is the same for all regimes

VW Direct needs to give themselves a shake.  They can be as bad as Service Desk Staff.  It is like Lost in Translation from German to English / Czech / Spanish or any language with them.

I am interested in what the oil they say they would use with a Euro 6 TDI for fixed services. ?  What is this 'Conventional Oil' ?

VW 502 00 for a TSI on Fixed Servicing is 'Conventional oil' ie Not Long Life Oil..

https://volkswagen.co.uk/owners-and-drivers/servicing/service-plans/service-schedules

If you are used to doing your own servicing you could do Oil & filter Changes between Dealership Variable Services if you want.

Just get a vacuum pump for easiness.

The difference in price of the oil really is neither here nor there since it is a TDI of the age of yours that requires VW507 00 For Fixed or Variable Regimes.

It is in ASDA, TESCO and many other places at very reasonable prices.

There is not an increase in the cost of oil on variable / flexible if you are going 18,000-20,000 miles between changes of oil and filter rather than 9,400 miles / 372 days.

You are maybe buying twice as much oil on fixed and 2 filters and sump plugs.

It is still VW507 00 that you are purchasing.

The VW509 00 is for the TDI's that came from the factory at WLTP time and ever since.

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/466613-where-do-you-buy-your-508509-spec-oil-from

(TSI's are the ones since 2018 that VW / Skoda recommend VW508 00 for.  The VW 508 00 / 509 00 is 0w 20 FS IV.

That is what was used at the Factory.

VW507 00 can still be used with new TDI's.

VW504 00 / 507 00 for the TSI's.

......................

Below is for the latest TSI's not TDI's and Variable / Flexible Service Regime.

Thanks,

You are quite right the info, is very confusing!

I have a 2018, 2.0TDI which seems that new would have "509" when new which would be "0w-20", but recommended for change is "5w-30" 507.00 ??

The specs for 509, seem to say that it is not backward compatible so cannot be used instead of 507  - 5w30 is the only correct oil to use for change?
