Glovebox clicking: v71 recirc valve fault?

Featured Replies

Hi all

I have searched the forum and realise this has been covered before, but can't find any recent guides to sorting this problem and more importantly any pictures!

So my question is this - My clicking gets mega loud when recirc button is on, less loud but still annoying and less frequent with it off. Would it be better to disconnect the offending

recirc motor completely or to go to a specialist with a VAG COM and try that first?

I don't use recirc anyway, so which is best? don't really want to fork out for a new motor....

Many thanks!!

Just disconnect it, the motor is about £70 iirc and a PITA to fit. I'll be honest, it was a nightmare to dissconnect my hand suffered terribly.

Mine does this too but the other way round (only makes clicking sounds when re-circ is off), when it winds me up I just turn the re-circ on and it shuts up lol

IIRC you need to disconnect the top wires to stop the noise

Thanks very much indeedy!

I changed mine because it was causing the air coming out of the vents to pulse when the aircon was on, which got pretty annoying in the summer, coupled with the stupid noises!

Like everyone has said it was a complete pain in the rump, but it can be done. You need small hands and patience to change it. This is from when I did mine 2.5yrs ago: http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/100226-pulsing-aircon/page__p__1238788__hl__pulsing%20aircon__fromsearch__1entry1238788

It's been spot on ever since, so I think it was worth the pain!

You need small hands

Like your "artists hands" :giggle:

Better than calling them pedo-fingers!! :drunk:

I had the plumber in yesterday to fix the boiler, and he had what I'd describe as "sausage fingers". The things were so chubby that I had to change the parts on the boiler for him while he watched! It was strange.

So you paid a plumber to watch you while you fixed the boiler :p

My hands are like shovels, so I'm in for a treat, but I have fairly thin fingers not sausage like at all.... Any top tips then for the job itself from someone who has sucessfully done it?

Thanks

It's been a while but here goes! (forgive me if I've got something wrong, but this should give the general plan of attack)

-Remove glovebox (5 or 6 little torx screws), be careful not to damage the glovebox light in the process.

-Remove the lower cover piece of the blower, and then the blower motor unit slides out downwards (disconnect plug too).

-Looking up into the cavity where the blower unit came from, you will now see the recirc flap itself.

-Looking down the left hand side of the outside of the housing you will see the V71 motor.

-You then need to unplug the wiring, then remove the few screws holding it down (that's harder than it sounds as you have very little room to move).

-But, putting the new one in is even fiddlier!

-Get the unit in the rough position, remembering exactly how the old one sat, then you have to align the flap shaft with the motor shaft. You can grab hold of the flap and rotate it until it suddenly fits in the motor (the two pieces are keyed to eachother, so will only fit in one position if you know what I mean).

-Once you have the motor and flap aligned like that, you need to carefully screw the new motor back down, while trying to stop the motor slipping away and disconnecting with the flap shaft. That's the bit that drove me mad!

-Once you have it screwed down, re-connect the wiring and turn on the ignition/climatronic and test the recirc button to see if everything works properly. If it does then you have a success, and some scratched and bloody hands!

Once I removed the old unit, I reconnected it to the wiring and tested the recirc button to see what it was actually doing. It just sort of grumbled and randomly moved about without command. I also tested the new unit as a comparison before I fitted it, in the same way. If you find the motor won't line up with the flap shaft, then try plugging the motor into the wiring and actuating it, to position the output shaft in a suitable place so that it will line up.

It's an irritating job, because you have to do it one handed, and some of the time you'll find yourself upside down in the passenger footwell destroying your neck/back! Plenty of breaks and cups of tea should sooth the pain though! There's not much to it really, it's just annoying!

Good luck with those shovels!
