Door corner rust

Happy owner of an almost 8 year old Yeti (got it second hand 3.5 years ago) with around 100k on the clock. Have read a couple of threads on rust/zinc inclusion but they mainly seem to deal with spots on the lower doors. I have an issue with what appears to be the central rubber trim deforming, coming away and maybe getting particles trapped which have then scratched the paint and finally its lead to rust. A bit of guess work but the end result has been corner rusting of the doors at the centre of the car.

I was wondering if anyone had anything similar or had advice on the best steps to take deal with it and stop it getting worse. Given the age and mileage I'm not wanting to spend a fortune but happy to take it to a specialist if its not really a DIY fix. No similar experience so no idea what the charges are likely to be.

Some pics attached of the worst side.

Cheers,

Richard

I've had this problem, but didn't let it get that bad.

Yes, you're right, road dirt drops under gravity and concentrates between the seal and the painted edge of the door. The top part of the seal is pretty straight and doesn't have the bends which distort the seal and rub so much.

I sorted out the door edge with careful aerosol spray, and cut some thin film heli tape about 2mm wide the full height of the door edge to contact the tape. After two years all looks good.

Yeah regretting not having a closer look sooner. New baby and winter means the car hasn't had a wash in far too long and assumed it was just dirt. Had noticed the staining under the join previously but thought it was just a watermark. Looks like it had started to rust before the winter and then the water and salt have done a good job.

Make an appointment with your Skoda dealer to have their warranty person inspect this.  There's every chance this will be dealt with under warranty.

Having read other posts people seemed to struggle to get anything out of skoda on younger cars. I'm assuming they would say that I didn't look after the seals the way they should have been. Again from other posts the anti rust warranty seems to only cover from the inside out which this isn't.

The car was serviced by skoda for the first 4 years and I did have it in with them with the engine management light issue and subsequent EGR valve change but other than that mots and services have been with independent garages. The EGR valve did take a few visits till they figured out that was the issue, after trying a couple of other things, and at each one they did a "free" look over of the car and they never picked up any issues with the seals (that was just over a year ago).

Have trimmed the seals to stop them doing any more damage and will get a quote from a body shop. Might pop by the dealers but have a feeling I would just be wasting my time.

We've had the lower doors dealt with under warranty on three Yetis, one bought from new, the other two second hand.  We'd caught ours before the rust had broken through the paint though.  It'll only take about half an hour of your time at the dealer for them to assess it.

Just come off the phone with our dealer discussing this very issue. June 2015 car with both front doors doing this and specs of rust on one rear. They inspected in 2 weeks ago and sent it off to Skoda who have declined the claim!

Furious doesn't cover it. This is our second Yeti, the first one did this and they offered to cover but we bought this one instead, this has done the same in under 3 years and they decline the claim. How they can deem in acceptable for a car to rust like this in under 3 years is a mystery, especially when by accepting other claims they have admitted to it being a known fault.

Going to appeal it and see what they say but I'm getting ready for a battle

Do you have a copy of the report that Skoda UK had done for them by their Qualified Professional of choice?

The Dealership employees & Skoda UK Warranty Managersknow the procedure to follow or should do..

Thanks for the reply. I don't have this no. I spoke to the dealer by phone and they told me of the outcome. When I took the car in to the dealer the chap said he thought I'd be fine with the front doors where it appears to be rusting from the inside out, but might struggle with the rear which could be a stone chip. They've actually done the reverse and offered to pay up for the rear. I did mention this on the phone and got the "well it's their decision, I can't be drawn on it...."

I've fired off a complaint to Skoda asking them to justify their decision and will ask for this report now so thanks again

Having just read your link, I'm not sure there will be a report. All that has happened so far is the dealer took some photos and sent them to Skoda. The car hasn't been inspected as such, other than by the chap in the body shop at the dealer.

I'll push them to get the car properly inspected and have a report produced

I had 4 new doors fitted - under warranty.

Took a bit of a battle to get there though.

Just had mine to the local dealer, although they have seen a lot or 63 plates with the same problem, I was told that due to the service inspection report not being filled in properley that the claim would be rejected so they would not even consider starting an inspection or start a claim,  Bottom of all 4 doors estimate between £350 - £425 , garage who did the servicing wont even correct the mistakes in the paperwork when told i was going to make a claim against the manifacurer, what a load of rubbish this body warranty realy is

I hope you got that in writing from your local Dealership, the persons name & job description.

Also get in writing from where the servicing was done that they at times or all the time failed to do body inspections and complete the report, fill in the page after the Service Page.

?

What are the names of the 2 dealerships involved, obviously Skoda needs to talk with the Principal Dealer and the CEO of those Dealerships,

and the Master Techs, Workshop Managers, and the Service Counter Staff.

It is many Skoda Franchised / Official Dealerships not doing Body Inspections and filling in the Service Book pages where there were service books,

or doing online reporting, and Skoda UK know that and they are who underwrite the warranties,

so you reported to a Main / Official Dealer as required in the T&C's,.  so now in writing from Skoda UK what they say.

*get from Skodaa copy of the T&C's you were given when you purchased the car telling you your responsibility to supervise main dealerships servicing regimes and filling in reports, service books or online to the Skoda / VW system, and your requirement to annual or bi-annual inspections of the bodywork.

http://skoda.co.uk/about-us/contact-us

They know pretty well the real story.

Why are Dealership Employees not doing as Skoda publish is part of Servicing? 'Body Inspection / check' for damage, repairs, corrosion, and reporting.

Contact Skoda customer services yourself.

None of the bodywork inspections had ever been carried out on mine either - but I still got 4 brand new doors under warranty.

There's nothing wrong with the warranty - it's the dealers that are useless.

Bump.

For anyone have Skoda saying no Body Inspections done.

That is an Issue Skoda who approved / official Main Dealers / Approved repairers that are constantly not doing Body Inspections and logging them.

Over 3 years and taking advantage of the not cheap Skoda Main Dealer Servicing and it is listed that Bodywork will be inspected.
